If youre mining, and you get attacked 75% of the time you'll die. 2vs1 you'll die. If they in Bs you'll die. If the ship is bigger than you, you'll die. If you have no defence (drones, guns) you'll die. If you have uberomgwtfsploitbbqfishsticktankuntiltheygetbored tank until you'll win. 95% of the time just run, unless you are equipt to fight.

Get some insurance and kamikaze them. Education is expensive.

Um.. also, if their bounty is higher than your bank account.. then taunt them before charging.

Or something.

If they're player pirates, look at what ships they're using, show info and check employment history to see how old they are, and guess.

If they're NPCs, look at their bounty; it approximately represents how tough they are. For lower-end NPCs you can show info to see their "threat rating" (the scale tops out pretty fast though). Also, generally their cross icons get bigger and thicker the tougher they are.

You can also look at their bounties. the lowest is 2000 ISK. You should be able to handle anything in a 0.8 system as a beginner with one gun or ML and a shield booster. Even in the noob ship.
