ok guys im new 2 this game only been playing 1 day.a buddy of mine has the game and was telling me awesome of a frig the merlin is.i hoping 2 be getting mine here 2 day and i hope u guys could suggest the prefect set up for me.
since playing sfc as a klingon and eb as a terran im used 2 fighting at a distance.please tell me what i should be looking 4 2 help me set up this ship in the same fashion ty.

First, know your stregnths. Caldari ships are well respected for their beefy shields and robust missile capabilities. In addition, Caldari ships often give ship specific bonuses for using hybrid turrets. Since you are interested in the Merlin, I will specialize my discussion to that ship.

1) I recommend small hybrid turrets like the 125mm and 150mm rail guns. Consider using Iridium or Thorium charges.

2) Consider using shield extenders and Power Diagnostic System modules. They will help boost your shield strength and recharge rate.

3) I recommed 2 M-12 missile launchers with Sabertooth Light Targeted missiles. Also consider using defender missiles as well.

Good that you (Kahless) is an SFC player as I dabbled in that game too but only in single player.

Being an SFC player you have one leg up coming to EVE as SFC is a very tactical game.

One thing you will learn in EVE is the very same lesson you have learned in SFC.

ENERGY IS LIFE.

Without energy you can't power your shield boosters and your guns and you will simply die. Hybrid guns take up a lot of energy.

Recommended:

Hi slots:

Two 125mm or 150mm (or both in mix) railguns.

Two M12 launchers:

Nice thing about missiles is that they don't take up energy.


Med slots:

Shield Booster! (Never leave home without it) Set it this booster to autorepeat and press on it if your shields are being weakened.

One Shield Extender or Capacitor Recharger.

One Capacitor Battery

Low Slots

2 x Power Diagnostic or 1 Power Diagnostic + One Reactor Unit.

Skills:

Don't forget the following:

Shield Upgrades
Energy Grid upgrades.


Tactics:

When you have rail guns, you are pretty good at long ranges but suck at closer ranges. So do not try to engage close. Don't try to approach or orbit.

Merlin is a good missile ship (the Kestrel even better), but the problem is that its power grid is not as strong as the Tristan or the Punisher, which has the best power grid of all.

If u got the skills u wanna pack 2 250mm protos, 1 pirate drop small sheild booster, and two magnetic stabs (pirate if possible) in the low's, then u dish out some nice damage, also use iridium charges for some nutty range! or use Antimattrer if u wanna get quite close and dish out some nutty damage!

and if you want some more advice, use a tristan, it has more low slots! and is faster

250mm rail is a cruiser gun... can't put that on a merlin ;-)
