Honestly, I'm as lost as you are. I tried to turn it into a kiting platform for nano gangs, but it was just too slow. The Navy Caracal is a lot more accommodating and not much more expensive. Perhaps you could look at that, instead?

The Caracal (and its various reskinned counterparts) are the only ships that get a bonus to assault launchers. It's a small niche, but it's there. Work with it?

How are assault launchers niche? I see lots of (expensive) frigs and EW cruisers out there. Regarding lack of speed: at least Caldari boats offer agility. Lack of speed could be compensated by missile range maybe? I'm not sure...

I said the niche was small, not microscopic. My point was that the utility of assault missiles was significantly less than, say, heavy missiles -- a missile for which there are numerous superior ships: Drakes, Nighthawks, Tengus...

The Caracal can be moderately useful in roles as long range DPS support but it really does shine as an anti-frig/dessy platform. If you want a Caldari T1 Cruiser to solo in go for the Moa (Either Blaster or AC fit...)

I would fit a Caracal like this...and run from most things bigger than a dessy hull...relatively CHEAP and low SP fit, feel free to Upgrade to T2 as skills allow.

It is the dual web that really makes it shine. It can even kite and kill Thoraxes and such for great luls.

Don't. Use a Moa instead.
Caracal is an excellent cruiser, but it's strength is most definitely not soloing.
IT's range bonus means it can hit further, but the it has to throw away that bonus, to close to 'point' range.

The best you can do with it is an assault launcher frigate slaughtering machine, but that'll suffer badly against anything else.

Caracal - and Cerb alike - are standoff damage platforms.
The Caracal can do a very credible amount of damage at 120km - which is a range that's better than an awful lot of ships - even a battleship starts to have trouble.
But that's not an advantage you can keep, at the same time as closing to tackle.

So try an ion blaster moa, with a MWD, web, scram, LSE instead.

1. Solo 2. PvP 3. Caldari. Pick Two.

Really though, the same could largely be said for any race. PvP is eve is a group activity and Caldari ships are completely fine for fleets and gangs.

The Caracal can be a decent anti-frigate platform or acceptable range fire support (for a cruiser). It suffers specifically from incredibly bad fitting issues and slot layout, the lack of utility high slots, and the absense of a useful drone bay. It also shares the normal caldari problem of having to fit Prop, Tank, Scram, and Ewar into the same limited number of mid-slots -- and in the case of the caracal CCP didn't even offer low slots or drones or Grid/CPU to compensate.

It suffers further from the same problem that affects ALL T1 cruisers in game -- they have no role that a similarly priced Battlecruisers cannot do significantly better.

For anti-frig I would switch the Disruptor for a scram, and trade a launcher for a medium neut. With the scram, twin webs, and medium neut, if they are within point range they are dead. Also, group your launchers into two pairs, and open the fight firing only one of the groups to lure them in closer. They are gonna see you hitting them for crap damage and close for the kill.

But that's just me.

I much perfer the WD II for takcle range, no point in the scram as only an AB Dramiel will have any chance to outrun you (and a competent one at that, most dramiles just die horribly, quickly, giving you a fun killamil as thier super expencive frigate dies to your cheap caracal).

As for the neut, meh, I find its more in the way then useful. I rahter use a Cerberus if I wanted that neut. Dps on the caracal is not all that stellar, and loosing 20% of your dps is noticable, ecpeically when you decide to take on frig gangs, as is common in EVE these days. Optimal 1v1 does not exist and you need to gank and gtfo asap.
