I currently play this charc as an alt, and am thinking of getting into solo suicide ganking to add some flavor away from the endless mission grind. So I have been reading a lot of articles about tactics, equipment, etc.

Presently this charc is more skilled with Minmatars than Gallentes, but it seems most folks would suggest Brutix over Hurricane. Is there a real difference here that is worth the spending a month or so learning new weapons, ships, etc ?

Thanks

You don't fit T2 mods on jihadships and it doesn't take a month to learn T1 blasters

hey Crackpot - if you look on this forum you'll see I also tried suicide ganking recently. You really have to just jump in and try it. If you use cheapish mods and insure your ships, you won't lose much...

Killing a Mackinaw with a Brutix is pretty easy, I found. You don't have to use T2 blasters.

I have yet to kill a Hulk but it is coming... Some tell me you can gank a Hulk (untanked) solo with a Thorax, not even a Brutix...

1) Yes, a well skilled Gallente char (meaning, well trained with Hybrids) can use a Thorax to kill a Hulk (as long as its not presently useing active tanking). No idea on passive tanking, though. I think it even then could do it.

2) Hurricane is better than a Brutix, I'd guess (never tried it, so don't quote me on it).
It should be better. But I'd ask someone more experienced with Minmatar before trying.

There are factors to understand, though.

For example:

1) On belt ganking, is important the target is stationary. Meaning, 0 m/s. Is also important to check if targets is not aligned to a celestial. If it is, be sure to fit a War Scrambler and use it when you engage (scrambler if your target is within your optimal, if not warp disruptor will do).

2) On gate ganking, is important you are stationed between the target and the gate (when target in autopilot). That way, your tracking will be excellent, since target is approaching you. Also important, if you have a extreme close range fit (such a Brutix or Thorax), never station yourself near the gate, since you optimal will be so small, target may jump through the gate in middle of your gank. If not extreme close range (Blasters), then target can be between you and gate, same applies, commence fire as he is standing to show up in your optimal.

3) On both ocassions, understand that as soon as you target, you have to fire. No "Let's wait 5 seconds and see if target is still oblivious". Understand it now, once you commence your targeting, it means you will see it through. Every second you waste, means target will try to move away, warp away or whatever. Even if he cant escape, your tracking would suffer.

Some people like to use burst DMG lately (I've not ganked in a few months now), I used to prefer ROF (I fly Amarr), so dunno if it was because CONCORD response was shortened or because sentry guns hit for more now (or both). Still:

A) In any case, with belt ganking, you don't need armor. Go full gank fit. DMG mods in lows, maybe a Damage Control unit.
B) With gate camping, a Damage Control Unit is critical, as well as some sort of tank (plus the usual dmg mods). In any case, you have to remember that in gate ganking your targets are never well tanked (if your targets are industrials, at most they have cargo expanders and the ocassional Medium Shield Extenders (I used to gank with my Geddon, so I never cared about them, but a battlecruiser may have to consider them more seriously that I did).

On belt and gate, always remember to check your overview and see if CONCORD ships are present!

Since you're hitting a sitting duck target you can pretty much take EFT numbers as gospel. According to those, yes, theoretically you should be able to kill a Hulk with a Thorax. I intend to do exactly that next Hulkageddon.

I have to do a full T2 fit on the Thorax though to get the numbers up to where they are on my cheapo jihadbrutix.

Thanks everyone. And Zos - it was your topic that got me started on this. :)

Personally, I think Hulks have to be the whole point to this. Like deer, we have to cull their numbers when the population grows too large. (And they're more likely to drop mods that can help us break even)

So it sounds like a Brutix or T2 Thorax is the way to go here. I've been browsing through and found a couple of cheap examples (still looking for the T2 Thorax):

http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/42592-Thorax-cheap-buffer-PVP.html
For this Thorax I'm thinking of loading the lows only with stabilizer arrays - see if I can pop a Hulk then.

Or even better - starting a new, wardeccing alt whose sole purpose is to make friends in hi-sec (would that even be possible?)

Depending on your skills/ships/modules you may be able to take down certain hulks. Go in with a ship with a ship scanner (passive targeter may help you from spooking them.)

There is a large difference between some hulks, like a good or awful fit or a hulk with shield extender rigs and a hulk with cargohold rigs (not only is he not getting the shield boost, he's getting an armor nerf thru cargohold rigs.) And because blasters are so popular for suicide ships, certain hulks will tank up their kin/therm resists. So you may find you can take down certain hulk fits, and it will just be a matter of picking the correct targets.

You can also fit out a catalyst/thrasher for ganking, cheaper for some of the lighter targets, like retriever and mak.

Remember to have all your guns overheated.
