I've read articles and ideas where people are upset with missle animations, they propose an idea and then other people are quick to shoot the idea down saying it is impossible to code on the sever side with out complex calculations.
Part of the problem is in ship designs, turrets have points and can move in the respective sectors to hit their targets in spherical arcs. overlapping arcs ensures that turrets will always be able to hit their intended target.
Missles on the other hand being launched from very specific points that do not move, magically dont encounter any problems. If you are traveling towards a target and missle launch from your ship to intercept that target, there are no problems encountered. If a ship is behind you they still do not encounter a problem because they magially spawn from a central point on the ship.
So one problem is the directional launch of missles. If missles are to be launched in a certain direction should targets behind you not recieve a handicap? Should the missle not have to suffer consequences for being launched one way then then having to change course and direction to intercept.
So theres a major problem in having missle shoot off in a specific direction. Now how can this problem be solved? Let's take a look at some current missle technology.
The F-22 Raptor fires missles after they are hydraulicly flung from the internal missle bays in a fraction of a second to preserve stealth capabilities.
So why can't our advanced ships perform the same thing, there are hydraulic bay loading accelerator rigs. So for cosmetic purposes why not have a ships missle bays fling their respective missle into space around the ship. The missle then floats in space orients itself in the direction of the target and then activates it's boosters hurtling it in the direction of the target.
This would solve the problem of directional firing of missles and having to take into acount the penalties of firing at a target behind your ship.
With this idea refined by CCP, they wouldn't have to make actual little missle boxes that rotate to place all over the ship. Just look at the models of the ships and pick a point where you want missles to eject from, some ships might need to have minor cosmetic work done to put "missle tubes" in appropriate places and made to appropriate sizes.
