I've just started reading into PI, and so far I don't really see the point. I've spent some millions on a single planet, and sure, I make some cash but nothing that compares to the expenses of building the colonies.

So, how do I start making a good profit from it, and how much start capital do I need?

Goto wh space or 0.0 space and there setup some colonies and you will make a fortune with it. Empire sucks.

I would, if I could fly a blockade runner.

You dont need one in 0.0. you just need a good corp who will do it for you. You need a team. Stop thinking that you are a single player doing everyhting by yourself.

I wouldn't use fortune to describe PI income. With 2 or 3 accounts doing it you can make decent income in total by producing p4 items. However, per account, the income is really minimal compared to what else you can do in wormhole space or null.

Where PI is concerned there are 3 types. The 1st type is the person that can't be arsed to do it. The 2nd type does it only for POS fuel. The 3rd are usually the same people who like to mine and they use 5^10 accounts to make it work for them.

I use it as a means to make POS fuel. Therefore, I have no income from PI to speak of since my production goes into POS'.

I have 3 toons doing PI in a wormhole. Each is cranking out 375-400mil a month I in PI plus some of the pos fuel (I found it better off maxing my PI profit and buying the other fuels)

I am probably going to train up the other alt toons as well. Takes a week tops to get a new toon to RS 1 CCU and IC bothe to 4 and a hauler

As has been pointed out - you don't need it. Use black frog to haul out goods from null if you want - well worth the not having to worry about logistics issue.

I have a new toon with lvl 4 command centre skills..

cost me 11 mill to set up 2 planets in 0.5 empire about 2 weeks ago .. just sold the first batch of production for about 10.5 mil

so yes it pays even in Empire ...as with everything you need to know the market and know whats sells consistantly for a decent price

Yup. I make about 5-10mil per cycle with my lowsec setup. Next to no risk because the system in question is controlled by my alliance, so I can pop in and pootle around in a little T1 industrial, pick things up, move things, and pop out again after exchanging pleasantries and a little smack-talk with any blues hanging around.
I could make more easily, especially if I move it to a trade hub, but I sell most of it direct to the alliance as PoS fuel.

It's far from my main income, but I already set it up, and it's basically nearly zero effort.

Took a while to figure it out but now I make about 12 million a day. I'm sure a drop in the bucket compared to what other people make every day in EVE but it is nice for me considering the little effort I put into it.

It's a fun mini game that needs about 2 minutes daily and a vist to the planets once a week. Our corp buys it from me in the wormhole so no hauling, just some added income for minimal work. Plus it's going towards POS fuel, so it has a purpose.

I did it empire to learn it, once I learned it, I moved it somewhere more profitable.

You are totally wrong that you get no income from your PI.
True you do not sell your PI products, but you use it for POS fuel. But still you are basically making isk from it in that every isk you save from not buying POS fuel is an isk earned.

I only bring this up because far to many players think that if they make there own POS fuel they are running the POS for free. This is not true. The POS fuel has an isk value equal to what you can sell it for. It does not matter whether you sell it, trade it or use it yourself. Every isk you save is an isk you do not have to spend from another source of income. If your PI activity is saving you from spending 400 mil a month on POS fuel, then it is effectively putting 400 mil a month in your pocket even if you are using rather than selling it. And the same is true for loss. If you are using 400 mil a month worth of POS fuel to run a POS that only makes you 200 mil a month you are making 200 mil a month less than you would just selling the fuel and not having the POS.

Personally I set up all my toons across three accounts making POS fuel with the intent of running my own POSes for production. But when I run the numbers I make more isk just selling the fuel and raw materials than I can make selling the end products produced at my POSes at current prices. With the right set up and skills there is money to be made, but I don't spend enough time online to be worth my while.

With three accounts I am making over 600 mil a month just from producing POS fuel through PI to sell and running research agents for Data cores which I also sell. I spend about 1/2 hour a day to collect my PI products and data cores and take them to jita once a week bringing in about 150-200 mil a week. Not bad for mostly passive income.

This is on top of the isk I make while actually playing the game. There is not enough isk in PI to use it as you primary income but set up properly, even in empire, it is dam good income considering the amount of actual game time you need to spend running it.
