Hi,

i'm thinking about learning heavy missiles and get a drake on a second character of mine which i most probably won't be using before he has maxed out skills for heavy missiles.

What i'm wondering is if it would be beneficial to install rigs that reduce explosion radius or increase explosion velocity with heavy missile skills all at 5 in order to do more damage to cruisers and battle cruisers (he should do ok vs frigates because he also learns drones).

Would he already get maximum (or close to maximum) damage against cruisers in level 4 missions from his skilltree-buffs only?

Will you be dual boxing? "second character" to me would mean another account. If you are will this character be used for tank or dps?

T1, faction or precision missiles, yes, full damage.
Fury missiles, most of the damage.

Any char in a Drake with halfway decent missile skills will be hitting cruisers and BCs for either full damage or close enough that it doesn't matter with anything but Furies. However, if you're worried about it and your main ship is doing most of the tanking for you, I would suggest just dropping a TP on that thing, that'll clear it up nicely (and let you engage many frigs better too).

I'm not planning on dual-boxing, it's just another character that i let learn parallel because my main guy doesn't plan to learn missiles in the near future. And since i haven't got much experience with missiles i wanted to know how close the theoretical dps shown in EFT is to in-game dps for heavy missiles.
If you all had replied in the gist of "you get full damage vs battleships but only half damage vs cruisers with heavy missiles" i would let my second character learn something else instead.

So thanks for the replies everyone, a drake it is then.

Only thing I'd add is that flare+rigor rigs and good missile skills will let you use furies for everything, and they do decent job even on frigs with TP. For Drake this may not matter much, but for Tengu reloading to switch missiles for 10 seconds is a lot of damage lost. Of course I won't be using furies vs. frigate swarms, but if I already have furies loaded and there's a new spawn with a few frigs, furies work good enough without having to switch if you've got the rigs and TPs.

If your talking about truely maxing out your heavy missile skills as in V in HML Spec V and support skills V, may I suggest training up for either a Nighthawk or Tengu before you finish refining those skills. Get majority of the skills up to V except the last few annoyingly long ones and than train up for either ship, it be a better investment in my opinion.

As for doing full damage if your using standard or faction missiles your should be doing close to full damage to cruisers going off hand, I know my NH is hitting them hard with my missiles, but I am usually using T2 Furies still on them as it's not worth switching to just pop them as their still going down just as fast as with my faction missiles it seems or close to it. With the BC's your dealing full damage, their big and slow and die really freaking fast. For me it's generally 3 vollys per BC minus some of the Kin weak ones which will only take 2 volleys, forget which faction they belonged to though.

With a NH, this is true. But the NH is also specially designed to hit frigates harder than any other ship firing the same missiles. It's also one of the reasons I love mine so much. A Tengu in the same situation will probably want to spend more energy on flares/rigors/painters/not firing Furies.

Serpentis. Anything with Corelatis in the name goes down laughably hard. Gistatis are a close second.

Thanks you two,

the reason i want to get max missile skills and "only" a drake is because i want to venture into low sec and do some exploration there, so i need a ship with good "bang for the buck" (i might get sunk alot) and i figured this might be the drake.
If it turns out that i either have more ISK than i expect or that i get shot down by local pirates only on rare occasions then i'll probably learn a better/more expensive ship, but just to get the hang of it i'll do my first steps in a drake (and that probaby needs missiles 5 because it might be just enough DPS to do the level 5 complexes i intend to try out).
