Hello Everyone,

I'm currently flying a Vexor for missioning, but I'm not really enjoying how drone-centric the Vexor is (and lets face it, Gallente ships in general). I'm looking to cross-train into something that will use a good chunk of my current skills to reduce training time as much as possible, and I'm hoping people might be able to offer some recommendations on factions/ship choices.

Right now I'm just doing L1/L2 missions, so I'm looking for a good missioning Cruiser. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Vexor, however I just don't see the fun in having your drones kill most things before they even pop a shot off at you.

Go amarr. The Harbinger can use a full flight of medium drones and you can use 7 lasers. In my experience, they have done amazingly in pvp and you can armor tank or passive shield tank it very well. the battleships have pretty good drone bays while letting you get into the thick of it with pulses and do amazing dps. They also look awesome.

I felt the same way about drones and I have never looked back. No ammo unless you use T2 or faction and even then if you use faction crystals you get 4000 shots out of them.

Amarr is where I was leaning, and I've already done a good amount of training (cruisers 4, and sufficient skills to jump into a Harbinger, and level 4 Medium Energy Weapons), I just wasn't sure if Amarr ships lean towards shields rather than armor.

Wouldn't a BC be a bit of overkill for L1/L2 missions though? I made a run at some in a Mega and due to enemy speed I ended up relying on drones anyway.

Minmatar is the way to go. They have ships in every class that really own. except capital ships i guess. but projectile weapons have good tracking, cost no cap and can do all damage types.

In PVE damage types don't matter too much because he can just pick a rat that has em/thermal holes.

Projectile cannons use ammo and for the high dps version they use ALOT. 350k per faction multifrequency crystal which has 4000 shots. Even small faction ammo is say, 300 to 400 per round for projectiles...300x4000, 1.2 million for 4000 rounds versus 350k.

Amarr has quite a few drone boats and ships with a decent drone bay, Minmatar, not so much. I'm on my phone or I'd check, but I think the only real drone boat the minmatar gets is a split missile/turret boat, blech.

Tech 2 Amarr resist bonus is Explosive/Kinetic? perfect for an armor tanked hull. Lots of cap because of lasers but actually fairly easy to make cap stable.

Lasers have huge range compared to projectiles (medium pulse can get 8 - 10k optimal versus 500 to 2000?

The list goes on, sure minmatar ships are good, however, if he already has points in Amarr and drones, theres no real reason to reskill again to go minny.....don't fall into the FOTG Oflavor of the game) Amarr are very good ships in their own right.

Overall cost for operating the ship isn't a big worry. Right now I'm concerned about play style.

I went Gallente because I liked to the look of the Megathron. I got my Mega, love her to pieces, but she's just no good for starting out doing missions. The rest of the Gallente fleet is too drone heavy for my liking.

As far as Amarr goes, I like the concept of energy weapons and lenses, but from looking at loadouts on Battleclinic I'm not seeing many loadouts, especially anything that's not PvP, or smaller than a Battlecruiser. Are there any recommendations on Cruisers to choose, and fittings for them? (I know, I'm asking for a lot, but I'm really no good at fitting my own ship yet.)

If you dont like drone ships and arent too short on money, the only recommendable Amarr cruiser for PvE is Navy Omen. The standard Omen just cannot be fitted in any appropriate way without gimping the setup, the Maller has no damage and the Arbitrator uses drones.

Hobgoblin II x5

Use something like this and modify it to fit your skills. Its a nice ship with quite high damage output you can fiddle around with while skilling up for higher tiers. Remember that Amarr is very demanding on cap so you might want to downgrade the guns and use a cap injector instead of cap rechargers.

Another good choice would be the Phantasm if you dont mind skilling Caldari cruisers to IV.

Fixed :)

I know how you feel mate. I'm a Gallente junkie by heart as well and for years I trained nothing but Gallente and hybrid guns exclusively. Eventually, when Gallente ships in general had slowly been degrading into all but obsolete, I cross trained Caldari and am eyeing Amarr - at least for frigs and cruisers - now as well.

Hmm... Gallente got plenty ships that are great without drones, but ye for missioning, you kinda are stuck with drone boats. That said, there is absolutely nothing that beats Caldari and missiles for missions.

Rule of thumb:

If you want to own in PvP - train Minmatar
If you want to own in PvE - train Caldari
If you want to be decent at both - go for Amarr
If you want to suck at both - go for Gallente.

Thanks, that looks like something I can work with. I'll need to use T1 weapons and hardeners until I get the appropriate skills, but that should be fine for what I'm running right now.

Hehe, well I thought about Caldari, but I just don't like the "idea" of missiles. I like the pew pew of lasers. There's also the ship style. I know it doesn't impact the ability to complete a mission, but Caldari just aren't pretty enough. Laughing

I already have most of the major skills for Amarr (just need to finish my training to get pulse lasers) and I'll be ok.

You should go Minmatar. A Maelstrom or Tempest are gun focused battleships. Projectile guns are probably the best guns atm.If you like the Mega you should like them.

Also, having Gallente and Minmatar BS trained opens up two lines of pirate ships to you. Currently the Machariel is the best BS in the game, and even though it will probably get nerfed CCP is glacial about getting to balancing. So you would probably have 3-6 months at least before that happens.

If you are using an Amarr ship for missions you should run missions in Amarr or Ammatar space. If you can run level 2s run those until you can run level 3s then run those and work up to level 4s. You should use the best agent possible for your current standing. Standings are personal corp or alliance which ever is higher with that faction. If you want mostly kill missions you should stick to agents in security and internal security( the faction navies are usually the best to run missions for).

You can use this agent finder
And managing aggro will be important especially in level 4s. Level 3s with low SP it may also be necessary depending on what you fly and how low your skills are so you use this to see how to manage aggro.

As for using a harby to do level 2s. You can use one. I would use pulses on it. They have better tracking. Use hobogoblin drones and if you struggle hitting frigs use a tracking computer( with tracking script) in your mid or use a tracking link in your low. Though tracking computers are better and you should have your lows filled with either tank or sinks. The further out frigs are ( but still in range) the more likely you are to hit them. If they start orbiting they become harder to hit because their transversal goes up. I routinely one volley frigs in a baddon(awesome ship) 15km -50km out( cause i hate pulling out drones for a couple of frigs) on the first shot.

Always remove ships that are using ewar on you first, especially scrams and web( always keep moving). Scrams in case you have to warp out and webs because slowing you down makes you take more damage. Your easier to track with guns when moving slower or not at all thus more damage. And moving in any direction negates some missile damage. I dont this starts to be a problem till level 3s though.

Oh and word of warning: Dont do any missions AGAINST Empire factions. It will lower your standing with them and if it gets to -2.0 you cant get missions from any of their agents( thus you need someone to help you get standings back) and if it gets to -5.0 their factions navies will hunt you when you enter their space. The Empire factions are: Caldari, Minmatar, Gallente, Amarr, Amatarr,Khanid. I think im missing one but i cant think of it.
