I am currently building up my support skills while piloting a Drake in Level 3 missions. I want to make sure I am not jumping up in the ship class too quickly so I am trying to make my battle cruiser skills more solid (core comps, shield tanking, missiles). I would like to get to T2 weapons and tank on the drake before I move on to a bigger ship.

I do not have a good grasp on the pvp or null/low sec scene (or higher end pvp for that matter). What direction should I head? Is going to the Raven the next logical step or should I be looking at a Tengu first (Raven seems cheaper). I also have a Hurricane that I am playing with and I really like the ship but could use some more SP's for it to be more effective. I don't want to lock myself in to Caldari ships if that's the wrong way to go.

Any suggestions? I am not sure how to link my character info.

To clarify, my main focus is to build up LP, Isk and SP's in pve missions first for a while before I move into any pvp. I am interested in the pvp scene but not ready to jump there yet.

Get into a Raven to fund your PvP by doing level 4 missions. You don't need max battleship skills for that.

Then you can choose to focus on cruisers or battlecruisers for PvP, noting that they are very similar in fittings, and cover the majority of all ships in EVE.

No suggestions, but let me tell you what I do Very Happy

I personally don't PvP unless I have to, but I focused on cruisers instead of battlecruisers. I like the Tengu for PvE and the Rook and Onyx for PvP. I also pilot a Basilisk (Logistics 5) which can be useful in a fleet. I also like the Scorpion, though it is useless jamming stuff smaller than a battlecruiser.

EDIT: Get your API key (limited will do) and head to EVEBoard.COM if you want to share your character info.

I recommend sticking with the Drake until you can T2 fit all the modules (missile launchers and sheild tank). Look on Battleclinic for some decent fits. If you want to move up to level 4 missions the Drake can still work if it's fitted well and you have decent skills. Swapping to a Raven will speed things up, and is cheaper to lose than a Tengu because of the way insurance pays out. It's safe to stick with Caldari ships. They are the best mission ships and also have some decent pvp options.

Don't wait too long before moving into pvp. Eve is a pvp game and that is where the fun is in the end. The skills you learn (your playing skills not SP) while running missions won't help a lot in pvp as the situations and tactics are different.

The best way to learn pvp is to join a corp that's willing to teach you the basics. Also, in pvp always fly a ship that you can easily afford to replace. Try the Blackbird with ECM modules fitted for example.

Blackbirds have quite the reputation for being a cheap and annoying ECM boat. Similarly, AML Caracals spewing light missiles have a reputation for being great frigate killers.

You might consider joining Red Federation or Blue Republic (RvB) to have fun in cheap ships and learn the PvP ropes.

My confusion lies in that I have heard a Raven can just be a a flying coffin if you don't have adequate skills and I shouldn't hurry to lvl 4 missions unless I am absolutely prepared. However, the added isk bonus would be nice.

As it stands, I cannot afford to lose a Tengu, probably could afford some Raven losses, can definitely afford some Drake losses. I keep hearing that Caldari ships don't pvp well (besides a tengu) and drake/raven are seriously lacking. I know they are good missioners but I don't want to spend months retraining when I cross over into more pvp.

Yes, it's true you don't see many pvp ravens out there except for the odd gank torp fit. Drakes, however, are used en masse. Good value for the isk and a good boat to start to pvp in.

They generally don't solo pvp well, but work well (great?) in fleets. Drake blobs are quite common. Blackbrids are cheap and effective to fly in fleet.

Thanks for all the advice. I tried messing around with my hurricane last night and the tank and dmg (have relatively same weapon skills) just wasn't anywhere close to my drake. I think I will stick with tiering up the drake skills and grab a raven for fun to venture out to level 4 missions.
