So now you can get plex at a cash discount if you buy it in bulk... Why?

Is this perhaps ye olde - CCP will intervene to stabilize the price of plex?

For once I'm completely stumped, it feels as if they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Maybe they like the idea of a big cash injection at once instead of it being spread out over how ever many months, so they entice people into buying large quantities in one go at a lower average price. Does seem slightly odd though - after all if they can, essentially, sell the plex at a lower price - and it works for them - why don't they do that price constantly.

Well, it's hard to believe that a price of 199$ is going to attract any new plex buyers, so yes, I would guess the latter. I'm not able to get into the game right now, so can someone tell me how's the PLEX price?

In my personal opinion, it more likely that CCP is trying to milk off some cash from the players before they fail. But that just my opinion, each to their own.

I can think of much better ways to milk players than to make a plex bulk sell discount offering.

Cut the conspiracy theories and use your brains. It is an obvious attempt to compete better against RMT. People who buy large amounts of isk are obviously willing to take more measures to cover their tracks (disposable accounts, etc.) so CCP needs to do a better job of competing for that business (because they know they can't stop it.)

If the program is successful, it will be extended.

Edit: If successful, it could lower the price of PLEX significantly over the short-term, and if extended it might keep the price somewhat lower over the long-term. The long-term success is pretty much dependent on the number of people that switch from RMT to PLEX because of this program. The only problem is the tacit admission that their anti-RMT efforts are a failure.

Let me answer your question with another question.
Why is it that when you get a 1-year sub it costs only 131.4, but 12 separate 1-month plans cost a total of 179.4 ?
Heck, 13 PLEX at 199 is still more expensive than 13x 1-month sub, which comes up at 194.35.
And that's before you consider USD-vs-EUR weirdness.

P.S. Start panicking when they start offering 12xPLEX for under 132 (or 13x PLEX for under 143, not the lousy 199 it's being offered for now).

Im tired of the conspiracy theories, and i refuse wearing a tinfoil hat. It doesn't fit right anyways. Cool

Surprised they haven't offered an afterlife subscription to get some extra cash.

I would say no because nothing seems to kill the timecode bazaar, but unless I am missing something I have no idea why anyone would sell their GTC there anyway

guys relax its like 1 plex free, its a way to help up subscription numbers after the wtf failcascade of incarna, at the same time it will lower plex price in the market ( which is about 2 times as much as 2 years ago)

Yes, CCP thinks EVE is a sinking ship and wants to cash out, it has nothing to do with PLEX prices rising lately.

I dont think I agree with Rak's assessment. I could be wrong about this but the lifespan and subscription numbers for more traditional MMOs seems to follow a certain pattern, which eve has broken.

Since 2003 the sub numbers have only been going up, and the expansion content is traditionally free (aside from certain unpopular features of Incarna).

Maybe my facts aren't straight but I dont think CCP would consider Eve a "sinking ship", while still taking such pains to create something revolutionary with the DUST 514 link and such.

I agree, it sounds like one of the talked about 'tools'.

Given the general economic slump, I don't think it is the right one to use and think this is mostly likely driven by a eye on increasing revenue than the economy.

My take on this bulk plex offer is twofold:

1)A shot for additional revenue, not just upfront but overall. By injecting even more plex into the game, it sounds almost equivalent to a "stimulus package". There are at present a record number of plex sitting idle in game not being consumed. The more quickly plex is consumed, the less cash they are liable from month to month on the company ledger.

2)They are starting to get desperate to shore up numbers. If they can drive the plex low enough, they think more people will buy them off the market (consume)

I recall a figure from the Econ speech at fanfest where they said roughly only 80% of the plex injected into the market was getting consumed each month. As more months goes buy, this 20% stockpile is really starting to grow. Couple this with the significant dropoff of active players and I dare say less than 65% of plex generated is being consumed.

Time will tell, however all I forsee happening is a short dip in plex price until the traders stockup and relist them to same price as now or higher.

No, this is what happens when some "revenue analyst" says to the Powers That Be, "oh, crap, did we ever take a hit in subs with that whole Monocle thing".....

As to whether it's a "discount" or not, well, YMMV... currency fluctuations and so forth.

A lot of people don't buy PLEX to redeem for gametime...they buy to resell for isk. Some look at the difference between the straight sub prices and PLEX as just a convenience tax for RMT.

If purchasing PLEX the numbers make a bit more sense:

1x PLEX = 19.95....x13 = 259.35
All other purchase options yield a price that translates roughly to $227 for 13 months

So, if you're purchasing PLEX to sell or give away as contest prizes or whatever, you can save $27 with this option.
Not sure how big that subscriber pool is, but it's basically one free PLEX with the purchase of 12.

I'm guessing CCP is just experimenting with different marketing strategies. Assuming there is some masterplan to manipulate the PLEX market is giving them too much credit, based on what they've written and done lately.

I think a better strategy would have been to market this offer to game blogs/sites in order to get them to giveaway PLEX to potential new players, coupled with Incarna/Dust/NeX.

As far as market effect...in the hub I'm looking at, price seem off about 15M today...pretty negligible so far. But give it the holiday weekend in US and see what the prices are doing Monday.

It was not my intention to put forward a conspiracy theory. I do find your feedback interesting, it does make sense that this is a way to compete against RMT. If this is the intent I hope that it will be a success.

Yup - the only way in which this could affect the price of PLEX is by making them drop... hence my initial thought as to whether this was the intention. It is clear that this is going to have more than one effect, though which are the ones driving this and which are simply collateral is something only CCP knows. (hopefully)

I'm not sure I agree that this is an admission that their efforts against RMT are a failure. It might simply be a compliment to target the group you clearly identified - high volume isk purchases. If I put together a strategy, I evaluate it after a while, if there are loopholes in it I try to find a way to address them - that's more how this feels. (And yes - it's only a feeling as there really is no evidence either way that I know of)

Pricing has always been weird but I completely agree - when Plex starts to be cheaper ($$$ wise) than actually paying a subscription things will start to go wrong. A plex has a greater inherent value than a subscription because in fact you can do more things with a plex. Once I paid for my susbscription I cannot then decide to trim it down in order to do a character transfer or an ISK injection.

And yes... USD-vs-EUR weirdness is... daft.

Very well spotted - this could have been a great opportunity to shore up the EVE community by offering such an offer through third party sites and thus building up a bit more goodwill. Am I mistaken or is the only EVE related promotion which third party sites can offer the sale of GTC which are less competitive than PLEX are becoming even more so with offers such as this one?

Rich people tend to be cheep and only buy something they either want right now or if the commodity looks like a good deal.

Plus they get a nice lump sum, for selling server access for 200$...

On top of that, I do believe this is yet another phase in their war to stamp out RMT, looking at the numbers to risk, its a well planned move.

This move Makes perfect sense.

I don't want to sound like a *****, but I am getting really concerned over all those promos and their occurrence rate at the login screen. There is way too much attention given at the moment to * accessories * related to EVE.

I have spent probably 300-400 Can on EVE including Plex and I feel it may get thrown out into the garbage can soon...
