People have been piling junk upon bloated junk for years, using software to make games.

Look at the sizes of these and their effects 64KB game

Solid building and good optimizing saves millions in the long term. Problem is you have accountants and financial types breathing down your neck and demanding it yesterday or paying you per line of code. they stuff things up.

Just imagine EVE using Infinity Space Engine with the 64KB assembly work for ships in space then on the ground of the planets and in the stations using Unlimited Detail Engine?

It not uncommon for CCP to delete your boot.ini either.
