Flash, New Eden Press Service:
Following the production of the holographic will to the Civic Court, Sapphire Valadeus, a/k/a Sapphire Mourningstar, a/k/a Selena Abur-Alphaeus, was taken into custody by MIO officials. She is expected to be arraigned later today.

Speculation abounds but the most likely one is that the will was determined to be a forgery, and that Ms. Valadeus was somehow implicated in its creation.

Eh? Doubtin' me word counts as much, but seems unlikely. I'd wager the young lass had nary a thing to do with the forgery o' the will and were simply misled by it. Doubt she'd be goin' out o' her way to forge the will then turn 'round and drink herself into a stupor o'er grief.

Just me two kredits worth, as the sayin' goes.

I agree with Malcolm. I don't think a young girl would even risk ruining her future like that, especially considering she's recently enrolled in some sort of Holders' college. It doesn't add up.

If it does come to pass that Sapphire is imprisoned or exiled or something generally bad happens, I offer my support. I've come to admire and respect far too many people who are kin with Sapphire to just let anything like that happen, ya know.

Flash, New Eden Press Service:
Sapphire Valadeus was arraigned this evening on a slew of charges: Forgery, Illegal Impersonation, Illegal Emacipation of a Slave, and Treason. According to persons present in the courtroom, Ms. Valadeus did not react in any way to the charges and did not retain a lawyer for these proceedings. However, Falacio and McLarks, a prominent Gallente law firm has filed an intercessory motion on her behalf, challenging the court's jurisdiction in this case. They have issued the following statement:

Quote:
Ms. Valadeus is a capsuleer and under the jurisdiction of CONCORD, not the Amarrian courts. The charges should be dropped with prejudice. We are also prepared to work with local Amarrian lawyers to ensure that Ms. Valadeus receives zealous and competent council and not simply run over. As it stands right now we have not even been able to speak with our client.

In the short amount of time I've known Lady Valadeus, she has proven to be a shining example of humility and selflessness. This is preposterous, I refuse to belief she is guilty of these crimes, and if necessary I would testify as a witness of her character. Lady Valadeus would never do something like this.

I doubt Sapphire is reading the IGS anymore, but if she is.. hopefully she will not think she must fight this alone.

I offer my help, Sapphire, if you care to make use of it. If you're reading this, please don't hesitate to call. Falacio and McLarks Law Firm will be informed of how to get into contact with me if you cannot access your NEOCOM. Get in contact with them, and they will contact me.

As far as I am aware, forgery does not usually carry the death penalty.

I do not think either, though in the case of a Holder the matter is usually considered very serious and the penalty is often penal slavery.

Flash, New Eden Press Service:
Dareem Tam, reporting

Magistrate Uredaz ruled on this issue of personal jurisdiction today, finding that Ms. Sapphire Valadeus had resigned her capsuleer status almost a week ago and had so informed CONCORD, which was entered into evidence.

Quote:
Only an active capsuleer has CONCORD's protection, to suggest otherwise is folly. To become a capsuleer would be permanent exile as no sane society would ever allow someone that they cannot police back into its fold. This motion is denied, the trial will continue.

The Magistrate then asked the defendant, point blank with reporters in the courtroom, "Do you wish council? There has been a firm willing to represent you."
Ms. Valadeus's reply was a succinct, "I do not, your Honor."
What happened next was shocking. We decided to simply attach a transcript

MAGISTRATE: We can proceed then. How do you plead?

DEFENDANT: Guilty, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: Say again once more for the recording. You are pleading guilty?

DEFENDANT: Yes, your Honor. I am pleading guilty.

MAGISTRATE: Mr. Khopa, has there been a deal made?

PROSECUTOR: My office has not made a deal, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: Very well. We'll go through this one count at a time. Forgery, one
count. Specification: that you deliberately forged a holographic will of one Lord
Lazarus Valadeus and presented said will as genuine, knowing that it was false.
How do you plead?

DEFENDANT: Guilty, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: Illegal Impersonation, three counts. Specification: that you used
the forgery to impersonate the aforementioned Lord Valadeus's heir, deceiving Lord Esna Pitoojee, Lord Charles Kabber, and most importantly, this court.

DEFENDANT: Guilty on all counts, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: Illegal Emancipation of a Slave, one count. Specification: that you impersonated a Holder, in order to buy a slave from Lord Kabber, a one Amerti Yird-Kabber. That after her purchase, you freed her, having no legal authority to do so and helped her escape from the Empire.

DEFENDANT: Guilty, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: Treason, one count. Specification: that you coordinated your efforts
to remove slave Yird-Kabber from the Empire with one Avlænkaa Surionen, she then
being a combat pilot in the TLF.

DEFENDANT: Guilty, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: You are not allowed to plead guilty to this charge, Ms. Valadeus. The prosecution has sought capital punishment for this charge.

PROSECUTOR: We'll withdraw that, your Honor.

MAGISTRATE: So noted and a guilty plea on all counts is entered. We'll proceed to sentencing tomorrow. This court is in recess until then.

It's a shame Raze Valadeus took this creature into his home only to be betrayed before the earth has barely settled on his grave.

It seems PIE has arrived with their theological pitchforks.

I find it interesting that you used the term 'harshest' and not 'most appropriate'.

These are very serious charges. Still, I humbly request the court to consider the potential for redemption here. Especially because the girl has submitted rather than flee from the Imperial course of justice.

It is my hope that she might be brought back into the fold through penance and firm guidance.

I stand ready to assist in any possible way.

Huh.

I have a very distinct feeling this situation is about to be escalated beyond control. The lass was following her conscience and I can respect that. She did a noble thing, both in emancipating the slave and then facing the consequences.

Subversion and subterfuge are sometimes necessary to accomplish good against impossible odds. In the end, she stood on the truth and admitted her actions. One would hope the Empire can find it in itself to administer mercy and grace, as has been administered to its people by the god they revere.

If not, then it seems I will be making more enemies in the very near future.

I don't believe in luck. And when have I ever displayed wrath on forums? I observe, then reflect based on what I've observed. I don't recall ever feeling enraged that people disagreed with me, they have the right.

I always did like you, Graelyn. We should get a drink sometime, lad.

I do not consider myself capable of taking on the Imperial Justice System, nor do I intend to. My reference to my future "enemies" is not something quite so intangible.

The Empire will exact justice within its jurisdiction in whatever way it sees fit, my prayer is that it will see mercy as a viable course of action.

Since it seemed somehow people had missed this application of mercy.

Now, crimes as admitted are heinous enough. That some have the prepostrous notion of calling for additional mercy to someone who has willfully missrepresented the last will of Lord Raze Valadeus... Truly some of you jackals would close your eyes to anything done against Amarrian law and people just as long one more slave is secreted across an Amarrian border.

Any sentence less than death will be a show of mercy to this one.

That is rather the show of mercy I am referring to, Crow. You will notice I did not indict the application of Amarrian Law in this instance. My reference is specifically to those demanding the harshest, not the most righteous, penalty for the crimes.

Also, I stated that her intentions were noble in both freeing the slave and then admitting her crimes and submitting to the law afterward.

The crimes themselves I couldn't care less for. However getting caught and then even pleading guilt is reason enough to punish her severe.

Do the crime and make sure someone else does the time.

Not being a student of Amarrian law, I had somewhat wondered if releasing a slave was a crime in the Empire. My question has evidently been answered.

To ms Valadeus I can only say stay strong.
