Hi,

i've got a problem figuring out how local chat channel works in-game.

I've been under the impression that local chat is supposed to show all players currently in the system i am in as long as it is either a low-sec or high-sec system.

It doesn't work like this for me though, i've just been to a 0.4 system where local only showed one other player, but i've seen two other players (the one displayed in local chat and another one who didn't show up in local) at a station i docked.

Could anyone explain how local chat is supposed to work?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you were not looking at the Agents tab instead of the Guests tab while docked in the station? The Guests tab shows other players docked at the station.

Are you sure you were looking at the Local channel and not the Constellation channel which is on delayed mode and will only show pilots who type in the channel? The Constellation channel is for the cluster of solar systems you are a part of and is generally of no use to the average player and can be closed at your discretion.

Other than that, I am not certain what you could or could not be missing.
If you are looking at the Local window, you should see all pilots present in the system at all times.

You have seen a ship that was held in place by an active cyno generator.

Thanks for the replies, i'm clueless though why that one player hasn't shown up in local though.

I was in space (approaching the station he stood near), no confusion with agents tab.

I was also looking at the right chat window (i seperated local chat from the other chats into a seperate window).

About the Cyno generator, the player was alone near the station (until i approached). Is it possible to hold yourself in place with your own generated field?
If so i can't tell because i don't know what the effect looks like, all i can say is that everything looked normal, he appeared as a "box" that indicates ship size/class to me just like every other ship with no special effects i have noticed.

Guess i'll just have to live with the fact that i can't trust local as it seems :/

Are you sure it was not an abandoned ship? Pilotless ships will show up in your overview with the name of their ship class, i.e. if it was a Kestrel that a pilot had ejected from at station, it would show up in space as a "Kestrel" and on your overview as such as well.

That might be the answer. I was in a hurry getting my ship docked so i could only take a quick glimbse at the ship. It did appear on the overview with a player name and had no special colour coding. Would that be the case with an abandoned ship? If so then that's what i might have seen :O

If you saw a pilot name, it was piloted. Without knowing the exact sequence of events, it is hard to say what happened. However, local is designed to always show everyone in the system, unless you believe in the Sphere.

Then it wasn't a wreck. If you're interested in what happened (for me it seems pretty clear that my local chat just doesn't always show me all piloted ships in a 0.4 system):

- I was doing a storyline mission that had me transport wares to a 0.4 system
- When i entered the destination system local showed me one other player in the system
- I docked at the destination station and right before docking i saw a named ship/player that had a different name from the one displayed in local chat. He was named after a german actress.
- i undocked from the station in my capsule in order to see if the player is still there (i was on a jumpclone without any implants). He was still there but didn't do anything
- I redocked at the station, launched again in my industrial and then saw both players, the one who was properly displayed in local and the "ghost". Neither of them attacked me, but still only one of them showed up in local chat.

Ships don't always emergency warp right away if a player disconnects, I have had buddies sitting inside POS bubbles that lose their connection and their ship would just sit there for 5-10 minutes absolutely motionless, they did not show in local, but their ship was still 'piloted' and displayed their name prominently.

No idea why stuff like this happens, but if it keeps happening to you in the same 0.4 system, I'd chalk it up to blade weirdness re: connectivity for the node that supports that constellation.

Ok, thanks for the answers.

As long as the pilot not showing up on local doesn't mean any harm (because he disconnected as you say) it's not so important. I was just worried about some glitch with local chat that lets me think i'm safe when i'm actually not.

Yep, don't forget the opposite can be true too though, sometimes a pilot will d/c and their ship will emergency warp and be removed from the system, but they still show up in local, sometimes they show up with a red box if you have them on your contact list, sometimes they are still green boxed, it goes both ways.

Was deep into Catch (player 0.0) a year or two ago and a buddy d/c but his avatar didn't move from the local window, even though it showed a red box for him having disconnected, lasted like that for a good twenty minutes for everyone in fleet when we came back the way we went to go home, he was still visible in local even though he had not only been podded, but d/c when he died and didn't come back, LOL...so we KNEW he was not actually in the system for sure...

Laughing only seen that happen once or twice tho

By far the most likely case is that he used a Cynosural Field Generator and then logged off. The module does not allow your ship to warp off or disappear during its 10 minute timer, even if the user logs off. The cyno produces a very small visual effect which you might have missed, and a Beacon entry on your overview which you might have disabled.

Are you talking about the local 'count'?

I'm rusty on the matter, but I recall that if there is three or less players in local, there is no local count. You can see their names if you open the window up, but the heading just says "Local", not "Local (3)"

I was talking about the member list displayed on the right side of the local chat window. The local count (number displayed in the top left area) showed no number as you said, but the thing that had me puzzled was that there was only one of the two pilots that showed up in the overview displayed in the member list.

It was probably some problem with disconnecting while using a cynausial field generator or some other disconnect-related thing as some of you have suggested, so thanks everyone for finding an explaination.
