Somebody somewhere used a crossbow on some poor sweet innocent child and therefore we should now have crossbow control!

Shhh.... don't give the game away.

This is the one deadly raged weapon still available to the average UK prole that needs no license (indeed they're not even registered) and can be used with minimal skill.

Yes I'd prefer a large calibre handgun and a range of exitingly named ammunition, but you take what you can get.

Don't make a fuss or they'll ban these things too.

The longbow is a better weapon.

He was throwing rocks at a car. What did he expect ... ?

Ok, probably not a bolt shot from a crossbow. But honestly, if you throw rocks at a car with people in it you should not expect to live very long.

Well there's your problem.

What we need are a few crossbow killing sprees, murder suicides, and crossbow robberies to really get a control act going.

Depends on the application.

If there are several hundred of you (who have spent years practising on the village green every Sunday and know what you're doing) standing at the edge of a muddy field picking off French knights wading through the slime, or fending off some silly king and his k'nigg'ts with their knees bent running about behaviour from a castle in Mercia then yes, it's a better weapon from the point of view of range and ROF.

However, like I said, the crossbow can be used with minimal skill; you **** it, load it, you point and you pull the trigger. You can also keep one ready to fire without additional expenditure of energy and it's much more compact than a longbow.

Using a longbow (or any similar weapon) proficiently requires a much greater degree of skill and loads of room to maneuvre, and if you're trying to keep someone covered without shooting them there is a limit to the time you can keep one drawn for. Not ideal for home defense which is one of the reasons I keep mine for... that and plinking cans in the garden in the nice weather.

There are reasons why the longbow was superceded by the crossbow in warfare; its easier to use and, more importantly, much easier to learn to use. You can field vast armies of peasants with crossbows in a fraction of the time it would take you to teach them to use longbows.

Crossbows 4tw!

...unless of course you are referring to the Apache Longbow which I would agree is definately a much better weapon all round, but is a little expensive and difficult to get a license for in the UK... also it might take up a bit too much space in the garage and is only really suitable for home defence if you are adopting a "nuke it from orbit" approach to univited guests.

If the kid had his own crossbow, this would not have happened. Arm all children with crossbows. it's the only way for them to be safe.

Oh no if cost is an issue you can pick up a tank for 20,000 which is not only better than a crossbow but is also exempt from congestion chargesVery Happy

Depending on the age you might get away with classic car road tax too and they are great in the winter when we get overwhelmed by 1-2cm of snow!

Im more a fan of that 200 dollar blue laser that permanently blinds, and seers flesh, but if someone wants to go old school for their crimes who am I to judge.

Although who roams around with a ****ing xbow at the ready in a Rav4 none the less.

Talk about disproportionate escalation of force...

You could always load a crossbow with one and find out what happensLaughing

Personally, when I saw this on reddit I laughed for a good ten or so seconds and then said the kid deserved it and went on with my life.

Yes, I don't like children and I personally would like to shake hands with whomever did this. Specially since the snob was throwing **** at peoples cars.

Well back in my day - and that was a while ago - if I was laying there with a crossbow bolt in mah belly and the cops found out I was throwing rocks at cars, they would have said I got what was coming to me and closed the case.

There were two classmates I knew who fired a pellet rifle at a couple of golfers one day. The golfers (Golfers!!! Not Gophers!!!) caught up to them and beat them so bad they ended up in the hospital.

And... where they treated like poor innocent prescient little darlings who got attacked by big bad old mean men? No.

The cops didn't bother.

To this day I know one of these guys and he's quite a successful businessman now - but he never fired a pellet rifle at anybody for no reason since.

Don't want to start the whole gun argument again but what would have happened if the boy was shot with a bullet rather than an arrow? Would they be arguing for stricter gun controls or just find the guy and lock him up?

Shame it didn't go through the little brat's head. People have been killed hitting rocks at high speed and fatal accidents have been triggered this way. Whoever shot him with that crossbow did a public service.

Pretty vague news story. Even the local news didn't have much in the way of details.

If the kid was dropping large rocks off an overpass onto fast moving traffic, then the crossbow guy should have doubled back and run the wounded kid over.

If it was just a kid throwing small rocks at a passing car doing no more than minimal property damage, then no, he shouldn't have been shot with a crossbow.

Also, given that this happened in a neighborhood, what if the crossbow guy had missed the kid and inadvertently killed/wounded an innocent bystander?

Also^2, it was "mostly likely juveniles" who fired the crossbow. Call me old fashioned, but I'm generally not in favor of juveniles dispensing street justice with a crossbow.

Proportional response and all.

Yeah feel the same way punishment needs to fit the crime... A beating would be in order. X bow seems excessive.

But if every street had roving bands of juvenile crossbow vigilantes there would be less crime, if you ignore the roving bands themselves.

The more crossbows there are the more danger were all in Shocked The Times

The article in that link happened in my town, and it was the first time someone had been shot dead by cops in my county too.

Found an interesting video that demonstrates just exactly how deadly a crossbow can be.

A word of warning though, it's very graphic... and also contains unnaceptably high levels of a whoopin' an' a hollerin' from some proper knobheads.

Crossbow kill.

Let me answer that while wearing the two most common hats in my country:

(Fake) Progressive/liberal/socialist hat:

We are all too stupid to have self control and common sense and cannot be trusted to have sharp objects.

(Fake) Conservative/spiritual/nationalist hat:

We are all too evil to have self control and common sense but we must pretend to want you to have the right to have sharp objects while giving the police powers that even the East German Stasi would envy so they can make sure you behave yourself.

Disgusting crap like that is why I have spent countless hours and lots of money as an archery instructor. There is no reason to be proud of making an animal bleed out like that, and then the tards post a video of it. Large predatory cats make life difficult for farmers and ranchers, and videos like that have the latte-slurping Prius drivers clamoring for laws to make it next to impossible to defend livestock.

Though given the powuh, I would make anybody pushing for those laws should be denied food and forced to go pick berries in bear-infested forests without so much as a stick to defend themselves with.

On my land, my girlfriend keeps a Mosin Nagant handy because her big fat white (and very stupid and loud) geese are favorites for cougars. (honestly, the cougars would be doing me a favor).
