Since slavery itself is part of the defined culture of EvE, the game should provide more to role players who wish to take advantage of that defined culture. We need a skill that I would call “abolitionist.” This skill would be trained by Role players who wish to take the active part of those opposed to the Amarr institution of slavery.

Once level one is trained, it would have an immediate negative impact on standing with the Amarr.

Each level would allow the player to rescue, transport and liberate greater numbers of slaves at one time.

Slaves could be legally transported through free systems only by those who have trained the skill.

The skill automatically enables a feature by which the player can “liberate slaves” at any station in free space.

Only those trained in the skill may “liberate” slaves.

The skill automatically prevents slaves from being bought or sold by players who train the skill.

In addition, any players who have not trained the skill and transport slaves through free space may be attacked by those who have trained the skill. In other words, the transportation of slaves through free space should have more dangerous consequences than just financial sanction or confiscation.

This skill would introduce an interesting, immersive element that is lacking with regard to the slavery element of the game.

These are only a few ideas, I would welcome those with more experience to flesh it out functionally within the game mechanics.

Shocked

and for amarr players? A skill for capture slaves? Rolling Eyes

From my point of view, it's totally unworkable, and limited use to RP.

For the Amarr, the new skill would be "get mad" and "look grumpy." O wait, the Amarr already have those skills. As for trash a pretend, that doesn't cut it. If the slavery is an integral part of the back story of EVE, then it should equally integral to the game play.

Anyone familiar with the IGS knows that this skill set is needed. The proclamation of the Empress begins the vision, but the capsuleer must fulfill it. Isn't that the whole point? Give us the tools to make abolition a reality.

I'm not sure if a skill is needed, but you should definitely be able to free slaves which you pick up. Perhaps an option to free them while in space creating "Liberated Slaves" which can be freely transported (although maybe make them contraband in Amarr space). They leave your ship the next time you dock, and you get a small reward of some kind or a small standing change with each faction (up or down where appropriate). I'm not much of an RPer, but it still seems kind of dumb that as a Minmatar I'd just leave slaves sat in the wrecks of ships. Equally, I like the idea of the Amarr being able to take slaves. Maybe ships crew, militants etc that aren't needed as a mission turn in could be enslaved.

For RP, both sides of the conflict should have elements of advantage and disadvantage.

While I agree that it would be nice to be able to free slaves, I don't see why Amarrian slaveholders shouldn't have the ability to free slaves that have shown they are to be trusted and would by now be valuable members of Amarrian society.

I feel this motion is too much steeped in OOC feelings towards slavery the way it has been put forth.

You make a good point. Slave holders who wish to train the skill should be able to. However, once trained, slaves in possession of the person can only be freed and not sold. Also, the skill prevents the purchase of additional slaves. This would allow slave holders to enjoy the back story on several levels both as slave holders and as those who join the abolitionist movement. It would create a fascinating RP element between Amarrian characters both for and against slavery. This has potential to generate immersive conflict which is what a MMORPG is supposed to be.

Give the slaveholder the greater advantage if you wish. Anyone who trains this skill should be in a specific RP role that expects dissadvantage. It would not be for profit but for the RP aspect. Only those slave holders who actually play the part by hauling slaves, buying and selling slaves etc would be impacted. RPrs of both roles should want this. It would only make it more interesting.

no, this could "ruin" a character by training the skill... the only way it would work is if it was a
x.5 skill and u could unlearn it...

Also dont u need slaves for amarr pos's or outpost?

Unlearn? No, once committed, you are committed. Don't learn the skill if you think it would ruin your character. Call it a skill for fanatics if you want, but the back story paints it that way. Make the game play true to it.

there is no other skill in this game that once learned u can facepalm because your character is weaker in any point,

oh i know
once you learn a ship skill you cant learn any other race! thats basically what your saying. there is currently no skill that ruins a character, there are wasted SP for certain needs, hell i will grant u some skills to lvl 5 are pointless, but no skill actually makes your character worse, which this will do.

Hey leave the RPers alone on this one. Its harmless. Some Rper suggestions are really dumb and would affect everyone in the game on an annoying level. If they want to a slave trade thing let them go for it.The rest of us can just ignore the skill(s).

This I will repeat until it is understood. This is a RP game. It has an extensive backstory designed to inform and guide the RP aspect. No one will make you "ruin" your character. Also, there are many aspect of the game that "ruin" you. Security status, faction status, etc all have consequences no less ruinous than what this skill would suggest. All are matters of choice. Most of the comments here are from those who think RP is "gay." Is anyone making you play in a way you don't want to?

Again, make the game play true to the backstory; give us this skill.

To make this workable you don't simply need a skill-book. To make it work properly it would take a complete overhaul of the contraband system and possibly the way that standings effect movement in empire and the relevant border guards.

While I can sympathize with the concept of wanting to free slaves, I guarantee you that an easy way to increase standing with one faction would be easily abusable, and with a sudden use for slaves, they'd almost certainly be worth more on the market than liberating them for most people.

The only way to really make this workable would be to make a set of slave rescue missions which take you into amarr space, you rescue some slaves and then have to fight your way back out. But that just makes it another rinse repeat mission, and I don't think that's what you really want.

The core problem is that I think you want to be able to have some genuine impact on the empires through your actions, and between a few corps/alliances working at this, you could genuinely end slavery in the eve world.

The sad thing is that the current mechanics just don't support it. I'd love for stuff like this to be happening I really would, but its just not there in the game atm.

Since slaves are being pretty much constantly spawned, rescuing them doesn't really have any meaning, and turning it into something meaningful without making anything else similarly meaningful simply makes them more loot, nothing more.

If mini Rpers would be happy literally with just a button saying 'liberate' then I say give it to them. Because its not causing any problems, and if they enjoy doing so without a cash reward then it should be an option.

However, making a more involved system that only benefits mini RPers is kinda broken, and without an overhaul of a lot of empire mechanics to give all RPers something to strive for that would actually mean something (which in any case is near impossible to implement in any way other than just getting an extra bit of backstory because changing mechanics based on player actions would be very tough to do) its not going to happen. And all of these changes would pretty much need a major expansion to implement it, and that's not going to happen.

Eve is just not very RP friendly. Sorry guys, but its not. The mechanics simply don't give you many options. You are pretty much going to have to deal with playing make-believe. Anything that makes an in game difference to how the empires work is tough to sell to people who don't want to RP. Anything that is for RPers only isn't really making a change to the game world, and so there is no feeling of accomplishment.

This problem is the same with everything non-pvp in eve. You can only really make a difference to other players. You can't effect the NPCs, because they just respawn infinitely.

I totally endorse the concept. This is exactly what should be happening in empire.

However, I think that it won't be implemented because there are way more important things to do.

The idea of this skill blocking your buy/sell ability of slaves is bad. You shouldn't have features getting locked out because you trained a skill. Nothing like that exists and I'm sure that was done on purpose.

There should not be a positive standing impact for liberating slaves, only a slight negative with slave factions. Any positive impact would be very minute and only derived. This way, it can't be abused and will appeal where it should, with RP.

Only if they also add the "Slaver" skill, which would make you red to me. :D

This though, seriously. Making a skill lock you out of certain gameplay is a poor choice I think.

Yes, At the very least, Caldari should play a fence riding or adversarial role between Gallente and Amarr. That is already part of the backstory. This could make very interesting tension and conflict.

A notification feature that tells the owner, "so and so has liberated X# of your slaves." This could help stir the pot, so to speak.
