Hello folks,

So, I've done plenty of research about good ships for lvl 4 missions, but I was hoping to present a slightly more specific scenario than I have been able to find posted in the forums thus far. I do my missioning in Gallente space, so most of what I encounter are Serpentis, Angel, Mercs, and rogue drones. Up to this point, I've been flying Amarr ships with most of my skills between 3-4, and for missions up to level 3, they can rip through anything and everything, so no worries there. However, come to lvl 4's they're just not cutting it (too slow for my liking), I figure because of the EM/Therm damage. My goal is to be able to rip through lvl 4's like nobody's business: killing everything in the shortest amount of time possible. Given that goal and the npcs I'm most commonly up against, what ship(s)/ship progression would you suggest?

Some things to consider:
I'm not looking for something that is going to cost me billions of isk to fit.
If the goal ship(s) and associated skills can double for pvp, that's a plus, but not necessary
I don't really have a specific desired race's ships in mind and all my skills are pretty evenly distributed atm
I have it in mind to get a marauder in the distant future, for looting/salvaging (I prefer being able to salvage and make my own ammo)

I think that's about it! Thanks for your suggestions! Smile

Being Gallente and living in Gallente Space myself, I can tell you there is no getting around the Machariel.
Has very high variable type damage output and is fast enough for all different types of missions and enemies. And only very rarely will you face enemies that deal lots of EM damage, so shield tanking is no problem.

To accomplish your goal of "ripping through lvl 4's like nobody's business," you need to be willing to spend upwards of a billion isk to buy a good ship and pimp it out. The Machariel is the best choice for this: it's fast, does huge dps, has selectable damage, and fits enough tank for most L4s. In the interim while you're saving isk/training for T2 autocannons, you should consider getting a Maelstrom.

Unless you plan to go for a Golem (one of the best mission runners imo), I would say avoid marauders. The pirate faction battleships (specifically the Mach and Nightmare) will do the job as well or better, and you can just get a Noctis (it will salvage much faster than a marauder is capable of, even considering the time needed to dock and reship, it's still faster).

The Noctis is faster if you try to grab absolutely everything in the site, sure -- but if you're flying a marauder like that, you are doing it wrong.

The Vargur loses about 13% DPS to the Machariel, but gets anywhere from 60% to 90% more tracking. If you hate dealing with drones and would prefer to snipe frigates as they close in, you might be better served with the Vargur. Just food for thought.

…in fact, I'd say that if the goal is “to be able to rip through lvl 4's like nobody's business: killing everything in the shortest amount of time possible”, then a Noctis would be a bad choice regardless. At that kind of mission completion speed, stopping to change ships and scoop up random space-garbage is a huge waste of time compared to just going on to the next mission and nuking everything in sight.

The Noctis is great if you want to salvage and loot. However, salvaging and looting is only really profitable if you're already being slow with the missions. Once we're into the league of pirate battleships and Marauders, the Noctis will long since have ceased to be useful (except maybe as an interim measure if you've declined too many missions and need to wait out the timer for a little while).

+1 bil total cost Machariel (but not a billion in fittings alone)...
< 1bil total cost fleet issue typhoon.

Fleet Typhoon is ridiculously fun to fly, although slower than the Mach.

They're actually very different ships. The Machariel is dramatically faster and more agile; for travel-oriented missions, heavy damps, or range dictation, the Vargur can't compete. But! The Vargur does get the aforementioned tracking bonus, which means you don't have to move nearly as much in the first place, and it is way more viable to use faction ammo on the Varg than the Mach, which makes up for the DPS difference in the first place. Add in salvaging and you're just looking at different ships with different mission completion approaches across the board. In practice I see more difference between Mach and Varg than I do Paladin and NM despite their larger differences (tanking) at first glance.

Thanks for the input. Smile Seems like the Mach is a popular choice. I wonder how the Caldari BSs hold up against it? Is it just a difference in play style and you have to find what you enjoy more? Also, are there any particular benefits you can think of for flying Matar over Caldari, or visa versa?

Also, I just wanted to clarify that I would be content spending around a billion isk to fit a ship, just not over 1.5 billion... that's a little overkill for me.

The Golem is still one of the best mission runners imo, but it's not ideal for missions with long travel distances. The Mach can do any mission without missing a beat because of its speed and dps, that's why so many people recommend it: one ship to fit all your needs.

The biggest benefit of Caldari over Minmatar might be training time, you can train a Tengu with T2 heavies or a Navy Raven with T2 cruise much faster than a Mach with T2 autocannons.
