The Potential Problem:
spread sheets are awesome for organization, viewing real estate, generally a good way to get around. But we all know speed is a factor and we've all relied on muscle memory to get the job done when getting into a fight or killing rats. If your a second to slow you don't quite point them, a second to fast you get a message saying target is invulnerable. Why is this? Maybe because the initial overview(s) have been out ground to suit the needs of PvP and PvE alike. Maybe its because you don't quite have enough viewing space on your screen, or there are to many tabs to get to on one window.

What it is:
We've all been there before where the overview gets to flooded and you can't get to the target fast enough. Well I have a potentially "good" idea that may save you the seconds you need to catch that person, or the organization that you want, maybe even the smart capability of accessing everything you need in a compact area in a single window.

What it does:
The command interface is just that, it commands, communicates, and interacts with the type of environment your your in. We've needed a tool that can have the launch drones in button form that can tell your drones to attack wit the same button! We've needed a tool that brings the broadcasted target to the top of the list and not have to look at the broadcast screen. We've needed a tool that is quick and decisive to use that can get a fleet member the reps he so desperately needs.

Local should be in the damn thing!
So in this "magic" tool so to speak have local in the box as a listed view of everyone in the command interface. The view should concur with whats going on around you, If some one passes with in an 8AU range of you they'll pop up on the screen(if you already have them on scan why shouldn't they come up ready to target?) so you'll have they're name but not a possible ship for small-large PvP. In solo pvp it helps you devise a decisive plan to attack or call it a day.

Tactical overlay:
Who uses the damn thing? Are you sniping? Why do you have to zoom way the frak out to get a good picture of how far something is, and why is it in a bubble? Simple solutions my friends why not have it on a smaller scale adjacent to your ship read out? Why do you have to guess who launched drones when you can clearly tell if someone is neutralizing you. scraming you, webbing you, and all other forms of EWAR. Make it so we can see the 5x Hobgobs on such in such in an ishkur. Ever think of left-clickable drop down menus that display ppl and ship by what they are flying ex. BS, BC, Frig.
Everyone displayed could be in a hull class category list.

All this has been food for thought, I'll make a prototype if i get enough ppl that give the input/generally like what I've said above. So pleas go to town on this post.

While I understand where you are coming from, aren't you making it a bit TOO easy?

One of the problems of local is that it's immediate and always up-to-date, never in error. Which is brilliant for Carebears and the like, but if you want to sneak up on someone, well, just forget about it. Not gonna happen.

I fear with a system like this, you'll get a similar problem. Sure, it's very useful, but it's just as useful for everyone else! So I wonder if you'll get targets to begin with, as they'll magically know where you are and what the danger is.

ask yourself is do they have a positive fix on your location? sneaking up on someone is easy to do in non-cloaking ships. but the input you have given is useful but not to a full degree. if you see something you dislike about it change it. Meshing ideas makes something constructive. Also its supposed to useful to enemy or your next meal alike.

Does it matter? If they want a fight, they'll find me. If they don't, they'll make sure as soon as they see me they dissapear one way or another.

I'm not sure if I follow entirely, but my point is that a certain degree of clutter, a certain degree of not having information at the ready, is part of the EVE gameplay.

Well, tbh, you'll find many a people here to be much less constructive then I was :P

It's just that I don't see much in a -magic- tool. Which is not to say I don't think the overview can't be improved.

What I think would be interesting:

If the overview is used for people you have in your watchlist - if you so desire.
If the overview would be able to put the people you target on top - if you so desire.
If the overview would, for both cases, show shield/armor/hull.

This at least would decrease the clutter on one's screen a bit, without really affecting gameplay.
