First, sorry for my poor english.

Hey folk,

between 2003 and 2005 many good names catched by playeres to play EVE. Many of them stop playing EVE after 2 weeks or more and this wunderfull names are in use by inactive players. How big is the chance to include a mechanism to delete chars after inactive time of 5 years?

Imagine EVE in 10 years. New players can only use 1337 names or names like citicen12345678990.

Best regards

Some of those players may come back one day. it wouldn't do to rob them of their identity just because some players right now lack imagination.

Strange how I had very little trouble naming this guy and 2 alts. There are a lot of English names out there. If those are exhausted, there are around 7000 other languages. Not counting dead ones.

The OP is right. Although today there is not a problem, it will only become more and more difficult to pick a name. Maybe if CCP implemented that if you go 10 years without touching your account the name gets removed. If the player returns they can keep the SP/Items but they have to choose a new name.

We need to think beyond today and plan ahead.

Agreed, its there fault for not being here in 2003, people come and go from eve every month and CCP have increased the options for names massively by allowing third names in the full name, as shadow said, think of better names

I disagree.

Please be more creative and less entitlement minded.

You just got the ability to have a 2nd space in your name. Please use it.

I bet less of them playere have more than 2m sp and less of them will join eve again. We dont talking about to delete the accounts only the chars. The owner of this kind of a account can recreate a new char with another name and no longer block a epic char name. Char deletation can stop, for example, if the char have more than 10 oder 20m sp.

Yay, I wanted to call myself Princess Sleia (have you ever heard a more original name?) but it was taken so I just went for the plain ordinary path of look for Persian and Mongol names for inspiration and came up with Ishtanchuk. Fortunately enough for lazy me, it hadn't been taken already.

Not delete characters, but what they do to inappropriate names, make people do new ones or stay as Caldari Citizen201394211

A better solution would be to allow an inactive character's name to be taken after several years of an account being unsubbed.

Why delete an entire character just to free up a name?

I came back after two and a half years. I would have been annoyed if I had to rename my characters. This game isn't like WoW with its single name which forces people to do the whole xxXxJohnxxX thing. Since you can give your character a family name or skip a space in your name there are unlimited names available.

There's millions, if not billions, of name combinations in the world. Anyone who seriously thinks that there will be no character names left in a few years needs to get an imagination.

Also, HAY TAEDRIN!

Thinking ahead? Well yes, but there's thinking ahead and then there's thinking ahead.

Just because you'd like a name that's already taken doesn't mean somebody else's character should be deleted, even if they don't have a lot (what is a lot?) of SP to them, or haven't logged in for a long while and probably (says who?) won't come back.

I would support this if it could be made into some sort of pvp situation.

I'm thinking something like this. Character has been inactive for the last 5 years or more continuously. I put in a request for his name and put up a nice sized bounty, say 100 million isk. Character is activated and placed under the control of some random active player who agrees to play it, he must be undocked 5 hours per week minimum for 4 weeks with said toon. If I manage to kill his pod, I get the name. If not, the person playing him gets the bounty and I have to wait another month before I can try again. If the random player controlling the target character manages to kill my pod, he gets some cool bonus or maybe more isk.

All data is saved for the original character, so if the person who originally made him comes back after 5 years, the character can still be played, but will have to have a new name.

A two part radical suggestion:

1. Assign each character a unique 9 digit number that is publicly visible, and can be used in the targeting column. This number would be game assigned. The player would have no control over it.

2. Allow identical names.

Edit: on target calling, it is likely that only the first 3 or 4 digits would be needed for target calling, especially if the numbers are generated so the are not sequential (so characters created seconds apart, and identical in all other ways at creation, would almost certianly have very different numbers...)

I am 100% certain that Sader (no surname) will not be coming back because Sader is me. I locked that name away from myself nearly 6 years ago. That being said since I can't actually use it on this character anyway I don't care if it stays locked up on that account forever.

Won't happen because in the t&c's, CCP have specified that the character name will stay. This is possibly to help support the claim of X amount of characters in game or just because they could so they did.
The Char named [racialname]number are names that have been deemed offensive and are renamed by CCP.
Please note - names will not be changed so don't ask.

Names are vastly more important in eve then in other games. Names carry reputations, and for a very long time at that.

I suggest that any trial account be deleted if not accessed for 12 months, but all accounts that have been converted at some point get a permanent lock on names and characters, as it currently is.

This is a good idea.

Especially since DUST players are going to have to pick unique names not already used in EVE.

Yeah it's always been a problem with mmo's. Either have unique names and have everyone running around with Legolas1111 and Conan18783 or allow the same names and have thousands of Flash Gordans, Han Solos, Buck Rogers.

Though I love threads like these, its always funny seeing the names of people telling you to be creative.
