Use Andrea's suggestion, it's a great learning tool.
Also, I appreciate all advice regarding skills is going to be 'get this asap' but definitely get thermodynamics ASAP since it is standard practice to start almost any Rifer engagement with guns and repper heated, possibly also ab if you need to control range and also scram if you are kiting or in certain other situations.
EDIT for clarity: Don't actually start RUNNING the repper untill you are about to take armour damage. Also note that armour repairers repair at the END of their cycle, so if your shields are going down fast, dont wait until you start losing armour to activate the repper. Of course keep an eye on cap while doing this.
The Rifter is a PAIN to fight since it is so versatile so get familiar with a few different types of setups and why they are good/bad. Miura Bull made an excellent post about Rifters on his site. Brutor Bullfighter
. I can't find the specific post in question but like Wensleys (link later in post) it is well worth reading through. In fact, join the in-game channel 'The Autocannon' to talk to like minded and friendly people. (if i got this channel name wrong I will correct myself later).
RF Phased plasma is the default ammo to fit and you may wish to fit other types depending on what you are engaging. It depends on tech II ship resists and if they are armour or shield tanked, it takes experience but if you are uncertain, go with PP.
finally there are a couple of standard guides to read, they are more or less up to date, I think wensleys references wrong damage types for ammo or something but otherwise is solid.http://www.rifterdrifter.com/
