As bruising to the ego as it is, many many people far more succesful than you (and most definitely I) routinely use courier contracts and it's not harming their empires any.

That said, I routinely do pick up courier contracts if I'm going some place anyway and have space (and ehp/value ratio) available and yep I will always take a quick peek, mainly to see if my risk is not being misrepresented and occasionally will see a nice little arbitrage opportunity I'd not noticed. Thing about cross region trade however is that profitable gaps will narrow quickly and are constantly changing, so no advantage gleaned or lost is significant for any length of time.

This. Definitely use Red Frog Freight for every trading operations you do. It is close to 0% risk, because the 1 billion isk collateral will cover the risk for you. They have done a fine job for me on many contracts. (I never seen them take longer than a day to accept my contracts.)

I am making my living as a courier runner right now, as well, but with industrial-sized loads, instead of freighter-sized loads. I can go into low-sec, but not null sec. I am currently flying an iteron5, after I buy a PLEX, hopefully in the next few days, I plan on upgrading to an occator.
