I am about to jump into my first assault ship. Jaguar was what I was looking at but noticed the firetail , cheaper, faster, and seems to have same dps as jaguar. I was torn whether to even fly the jaguar over the firetail which seem to be able to do the job better. I am new to these ships and would like to hear some pro's and con's to help me with my choice.

The Jag is probably better. However I quite like the Firetail as it can be underrated, so it is easier to get fights. Additionally you don't have to train assault frig V to get the most out of a Firetail.

The Jaguar has a more friendly fitting grid. It also spits out close to 80+ more DPS then the firetail while fitting a better tank. Firetail only wins in the speed department.

Both are very solid ships. That said I think the jag is generally better. More people will fight a firetail however and although the jag is a little better, it's not leaps and bounds better. Given that you are new to them, I recommend the firetail for it's lower SP requirements and lower cost.

Dual prop = Jag = "I WIN"

More dps, better tank, and your enemies from frig to battle cruiser will be surprised by it's power, but experienced players is another story Wink

Both are good, Jag is better for combat IMHO. Firetail excels at pseudo covert ops. I smuggled 1.7 billion worth of stuff out of Jita with one yesterday. But the Jag would win in a fight.

However the point was already made that the firetail takes less SP to get into. I would go firetail then jag if you have the money.

If money is scarce I would wait for the jag.

dual prop Jag with Medium shield extender is a lovely ship.

So is the Firetail actually any good then? I've been looking for a nice T2 ship I can use for PVP without needing frigates V, and this would seem to fit the bill...

It won't be without frigate V.

this...look at the bonues you are giving up and rethink no frig 5 training. the 20% damage bonus is a no brainer. You will like that extra 7.5% tracking bonus as well.

Since you sound newish, have you done the usual go blow up rifters for cheap thrills and lessons already? If not, I'd look into it.

Firetails have their place. They are inferior, but they are also significantly cheaper. Cost effectiveness is a very important part of pvp and although firetails aren't the best frigate hull, they are cost effective and tbh, that's more important typically. I have firetails and jags, both get used.

To be honest I wouldn't say the firetail is inferior at all when comparing it to the Jaguar. Sure if you fly it and fit is exactly like a Jaguar then that is what you get, an inferior jaguar. However if you can abuse the firetails superior agility, speed, ability to overheat the guns for a very long time, and most of all tracking bonus, you can get a very fun ship that can beat the might jaguar, wolf, or even the dram.

The Firetail is a way to light your own farts for ISK.
