I am not really new, but I have not been playing much recently. I have been thinking about working towards the ability to utilize a POS. I know it will take awhile to get to that point but I do have some early questions that I believe are answerable. I typically ask first in alliance chat, but I thought about this over vacation and still will not have access to a comp with EVE on it for a few more days. So thank you in advance for any help given.

Is it possible to find POS's that are no longer maintained by active or inactive corporations?

My second question is, if you find a POS that was put up by an active or inactive corporation is there any way that you can take it over?

If there are any modules still anchored you can blow up the POS and steal them.
I think you have to rep damaged modules before they will unanchor. Once made 200 M isk in 2 hours like that Razz

It is fairly easy to destroy an offline control tower (no force field). I destroyed a small control tower to anchor my own large control tower, but I chose to find empty moons for the next two control towers I anchored.

In hisec you have to wardec the owning corp first, which gives them 24 hours to online it.

When you attack any part of a POS, EVE-mails are automatically sent out to the owner.

It should be mentioned that the only way to reasonably take down a large control tower in low sec is with a dreadnaught or a fleet of battleships. And a solo dreadnaught just screams out "FREE CAP KILLMAIL HERE" to the local pirates. That being said, if you are brave, and the system is empty enough (or you are on good terms with the locals) you might be able to sneak a dreadnaught in there long enough to take down an offline POS. It's risky, though.

2 things additionally that you should know.

Firstly, the forcefield of a starbase has entirely nothing to do with its shield HP.
An offline starbase will have no forcefield but will still have full shields, ie ~50M hp on a large control tower, with passive regen on top.

Secondly, if you find an anchored starbase in high security space belonging to a disbanded corp, you can petition to have it removed, as there would be no legal way to attack it (you can't wardec disbanded corps) and suicide ganking a POS isn't exactly possible either.

This is infact not true.
We're doing it with stealth bombers.
In 0.0, granted, but nevertheless with stealth bombers. It's boring as hell but it works.
<Fleet up . shoot tower . get hotdroped . cloak up/buzz off . rinse,repeat>

Alright, so you can also do it with a fleet of stealth bombers too Very Happy

Although I do have a question - how do you protect yourself from small guns? I would imagine that stealthbombers wouldn't exactly tank very well.

It takes about 10 seconds for a small gun to lock on a frigate. That's long enough to drop a bomb (on modules only) and a volley of torps, and warp out. Now this isn't very practical, and will cost a fortune in bombs.

If there are no smalls of both long and short range, then SB can just speed tank medium/large guns (a cruiser can speed tank mediums). If there are only small short range or small long range, those can be incapacitated first.

Webs are of course handy too, but most POS only have 1 or 2, and like all EWAR they take over a minute to lock on a frigate, and not necessarily the same one locked by a gun.
