So I noticed I can form a fleet with myself (that sounds dirty somehow) - ie I'm the only one in the fleet.

Do I gain bonuses from my own leadership skills in this instance?

Do they benefit me regardless of if I am in a "fleet" (consisting of just myself) or not, (with fleeting only extending the bonus to others).

No. You need at least two people in a fleet for it to be considered an actual fleet and give you the fleet bonuses.

Tippia,

Can both people be in different systems and still gain the bonuses?

That is, can I fleet up with a friend halfway across the universe and gain my fleet bonuses for myself?

No.

Bonuses are only provided if you're in the same system as the assigned booster and you have a properly set-up fleet (ie. no empty spots and/or people in the wrong squads), who are also in the right system and the squad/wing/fleet leaders have the right skills to support the number of subordinates.

These days, it's not so difficult to get all of this right since you automatically get assigned the role of squad leader if you form a fleet, and since your invites will by default be placed in the squad under you. Unless you need to expand to more squads, all you have to do is make sure that the fleet stays together.

And before someone asks, at least two fleet members need to be in space in the same system, so no station spinning just to get bonuses.

Or, to put it another way:

Fleet bonuses are actually quite simple: they operate on a strict "no cheesing" policy. The bonuses are meant for a group of people working together as a unit, so unless you do something very close to that, you're not getting any. You can pretty much assume that if you're trying to get away with something or take a short-cut, it won't work.

The only real semi-kind-of-almost-exception to this is that you don't have to be on the exact same grid as each other your booster(s) and bonus-conducting leaders can be spread out in space in the system and still keep the whole bonus flow active (hence the tradition of hiding fleet CS in a POS bubble or the now-obsoleted use of unprobable command module T3s). But that's pretty much as far as it goes.

Just make a free 51 day alt, and BAM, personal fleet bonuses.

I asked the wrong question. I should have asked: Can both people be in different systems and one pilot still gain the bonuses?

Same question, same answer.
