TBH some competition could do EVE some good. Might make the upper echelons of CCP pull their collective head out of their collective ass.

(edit after actually watching some of the stuff on the channel)- *SIGH*, nope, this game is vaporware.

Perhaps CCP should just buy the I-Novae engine for the massive update in 2013?

Purchase outdated bugged piece of vaporware? What a smart investment idea you have here!

if it is vaperware then that would be quickly established. The way their scaling seems to work however is certainly interesting. The addition of newtonian physics is not to be scoffed at either.

Graphics wise it is sub par but that's something entirely different. Point is there are interesting new ways of building, scaling and editing worlds these days. It would be nice to have these things in eve "some day".

Not an obvious contender perhaps, but one which peaked my interests due to a comment from PC Gamer in this month's issue.

Planetside 2

For those not old enough to remember the original, this is an FPS of sorts. You have a perpetual world where two (in this case three) factions fight it out for territory.

However, in the sequel, according to PC Gamer, there is territory, resource, and research elements 'comparable to the EVE Online sandbox'.

I loved the original. Couple that with the promise of more depth described above, and this is one I shall be keeping a close eye on.

Either way, if fighting over territory and resources in massive co-ordinated groups is your thing, then this may be something to try.

As much as the [23] is a lie, the competition towards EVE is a lie.

It does look good, but infortunately it's another $OE product and i have vowed never to play another $OE game.

Holy crap

They had me at "Newtonian Physics".

This is the reason why EVE needs to be either severly upgraded our outright replaced. If you want to create a science fiction simulator you have to build it from the ground up, and that means realistic physics.

This is the reason why PVP and PVE are boring, and this is the fundemental flaw behind the underlying programming mess that is EVE online.

If "Infinity: The Quest for Earth" is anything like their web site is describing it there will be questionable room left over for EVE.

Real physics, planets that actually orbit a star, ships that you can actually and properly fly. All they need is a diversified sandbox with a complex economic model and there will finally be an MMO for adults.

Thanks for sharing that link. I had no idea anyone was working toward something that awesome.

The problem with wishing and hoping, especially where video games come into play, is when the developers don't want to do all the work to provide that amazing product.

I expect a flight sim with slight alterations to make up and down less obvious, a very simplified and overmoderated market model, and a VERY controlled sandbox that allows no true freedom.

Why do I expect this? Because beyond EvE, nobody else has done it. Not saying it can't be done, just that I've been at this hobby for too long to waste hopes and dreams on things I can't control, only to get ****ed years later when/if it does release.

That's some mighty shameful mecha design, if I ever saw one.

PS: Infinity is basically vaporware. Competition would only do well for eve (well, they DO have some competition, the MMORPG market as a whole), bit it won't come from Infinity or this Traveler: online for sure.

So here is an honest question about Infinity: what the hell what you actually do with other players in this game?

More importantly, since you cannot get out of your ship, why the hell would you program terrain like that? At a glance it seems so vast and epic, a lot to explore etc. But really, wtf would you actually DO in this game.

I imagine the first month (doubt it would take that long) being in awe of the scale of everything, exploration, etc. Then slowly but surely falling asleep after only a few minutes of playing because you know what sucks about real space? IT IS BORING, extremely boring! Can you pvp, build anything? All we know about that game is that you can fly in a ship with a "physical" game engine from star to surface. While a cool idea, i am curious if it would be a fun GAME to play.

This is exactly what Infinity fanbois cannot wrap their head around and why it won't be real competition for EVE even if it were finished today. There is no reason why players would come together, given that even if that game had 10 million players, every player could rule a galaxy the size of EVE for himself.

Don't hold your breath. I've been waiting for this game for more than like 2 or 3 years. I'm not really a contributor or anything, but I follow it, visit once in a while to see how all's going.

Hopefully soon. Something tells me when this game comes out, EVE really will die. Which is unfortunate, because EVE itself is such an awesome game. So, unless they (CCP) steps up their game, they only have a few years left. . . . .

I'm far from convinced that newtonian pvp would be better that what we have now. If anything, it wouldn't be lag-friendly.

relativist flight imply really long range weaponry, so we'd be spending our time firing at dots thousands or millions kilometers away.

Powerful 3D engine and good, long lasting MMORPG based on it, are two VERY different things - latter being incredibly much harder to achieve. Flavien is still working on I-Novae while the game, besides chaotic pile of paper ideas, is practically non existent. That's the real problem with Infinity and that's why I don't expect to see it goes live in next 5 years. If ever.

But someone, somewhere, sometime... *will* make great next-gen space sandbox game, that's out of question.

A lot of what's in that video is stuff that Eve should've had a good while ago Crying or Very sad

Yeah, but to do that CCP should completely scrap this ancient 3D engine EVE is based on and rewrite it from zero (or buy new one). Because face liftings can work only to a certain degree, after which they become useless. Although EVE is looking pretty good at first glance, severe limitations and rapid aging can be seen everywhere.
