Explaining the story of how we came to be in the Eve universe is a bit tough to do at this point because it's been more than hinted at that what we where told happened, is probably not what happened. A lot of aspects in the various background stories of Eve are actually about the decay of knowlage over time. The Eve gate and how it was closed isn't the only example of this. The Sleepers too are a good example. We can find evidence all over Eve of the ancient Sleeper race, but finding out exactly what happened to them is quite hard because over time, our knowlage of them, as well as the evidence they left behind, decayed.
If you really really want to know what happened to the Eve gate, or about anything else in the Eve history, you'll have to engage in the very fun passtime of delving into the game looking for clues and theorize, and discuss with others.
I surely do recommend it, it's fun!
