someone of a given population openly says something about said given population which is considered offensive however due to that person being of that given population it makes it ok.

For example

When a gay person calls himself a f*****
When a black guy calls himself a n****
When a cat calls another cat a p****

Basically this? (old but I think you get the point)

There is a word for it but I forgot what it is called

its generally called using the "race card" when talking about the dreaded "N-Bomb" being used by black people. basically there is a misdirected belief its ok for someone of a group that has a slur for it to use it themselves and its no longer bad as long as someone from that group is the one using it.

of course this is untrue but it will take a lot of effort to get that through to the entertainment industry which is what fuels lots of this.

Also known as "pot calling the kettle black" syndrome.

A quick Wikipedia check yields this, that's the closest I could find to what you want though.

It's not called anything other than acceptable behaviour amongst your peers.

So, you wouldn't call your mom a *****, but it might be something that is acceptable to your girlfriend/wife/BoTS in the throws of passion.

I wouldn't call anybody anything other than their name, if I didn't know them - once I get to know them and there's a friendship/relationship/kinship in place, I'll call them whatever they want to be called.

In its simplest form, it's the same thing as calling someone 'Tom' instead of 'Thomas', because that's what they want you to call them.

Nah, context matters.

Define what the N-word means.

Is it a noun? Are all dark skinned people [N-word]s?

Or is the N-word a belief? When a pasty individual uses the N-word, aren't they actually saying that all people with certain cosmetic differences are automatically inferior and can thus be morally treated as 2nd class citizens (or worse) regardless of ability or merit?

There's a big difference between two friends calling each other [N-word]s and a high school drop out white hillbilly with no teeth who is married to his sister and yet who feels superior enough to a black doctor to call the doctor a [N-word] and for the doctor to know his place.

On a side note, I don't think Whitey can fully appreciate the impact of the N-word until there's a white equivalent of the N-word. (Sorry, "cracker" and "******" don't cut it.) Personally, I this as happening when white Americans become a minority in 2040 or so. A lot of white people are not going to be happy being called a minority... Twisted Evil

I would hope the stupid "minority," stigma dies with the old white-right majority. If racism is still prevalent at that point, i'll be a bit sad.

Of course, most of those angry Americans won't be able to understand the Spanish the rest of us are speaking so, it doesn't really matter. Laughing

Protip: The simplest method of trolling any republican is to have a conversation in spanish right next to them.

Wow, you're going to be in for quite a surprise if you think Spanish will be the predominant language in the US. I hear "Jesus, they need to learn to speak english." just as much from Mexican-Americans here in Texas, maybe even more than I do whites.

This is a debate I've frequently had with my conservative friends who think like you do on this issue. I'm 30, and the age range of my friends is mostly between 20 to 40. And of those who are latino, the difference between older and younger is night and day. The younger ones who are bilingual speak poor or absolutely awful Spanish. And I've asked them if they intend to teach their children Spanish, and the answer is always no. They'd rather go shopping. Laughing

Humans are lazy by their nature, and if they can get away with one language or not teaching their children two languages, they will. Young latino language today is mostly English and Spanglish. In another generation, it'll just be another dialect of English.

I said if they can get away with it. In Europe, for example, where you have so many languages relatively close together, you're more likely to see multilingualism.

In the United States, where there is one dominant culture and language, and all children are taught English, you don't need Spanish to function at all (outside of being a police officer in certain areas). Even in areas with high populations of latinos, many of them are going to be functionally bilingual, and almost all their children will at least speak English.

For this reason, Spanish will fade as a second language for most latinos here over a generation or so.

Language is not just a burden you have to carry. At least not to everybody.
Some people like extending the circle of people they can communicate with.
Some people like reading foreign poetry, understanding foreign movies.
Some people like languages in general.
There are many reasons to learn another language.

I will grant you that too many people have an aversion to learning new things in general, but if that were human nature we'd be still stuck in caves.
It's probably more of a "teaching new tricks to an old dog" effect. For the younger ones I guess it depends on their environment.

I believe the phrase you're looking for is, "to teach an old dog new tricks."

+1 for your english idioms.
