Hey all,

I trained Tactical Shield Manipulation to lvl IV ages ago for Tech II hardeners. The skill description states that I should have a 5% chance for damage to bleed through my shields when they're below 25%. However, despite having my shields brought down to 2-3% hundreds times on missions (I'm rather aggressive about conserving capacitor) I've yet to see any damage bleed through at all.

My best guess is that lvl IV of the skill is glitched, seeing as I definitely had bleed through before training it. Can anyone conform this?

Seems like you've misunderstood the skill a little. At level IV, there's a chance for bleed-thru only if shields are below 5%.

The real question should be this:
Is this skill beneficial to a shield tanking vessel at all as it prevents damage from being taken on your precious shield HPs and allows your armour to provide extra buffer prior to your shield breaking completely?

Well, there have been about a thousand threads regarding TSM V. There's some thought that if you are buffer tanked, there are circumstances where it is better to leave it at lvl 4. Very little testing has been done in-game to prove this--more just theoretical talk.

You've misred my post. Like I said, I've had my shields drop down to 2-3% hundreds of times, however I've never seen bleed through. The ONLY time my armor ever takes damage, is if my shields hit 0%.

To those who talk about whether or not bleed through is good/bad for combat, I'd rather not have to deal with the nuisance of having to repair my armor after missions because I cut it just a little too close.

Put simply, all I want to know is if anyone can confirm my theory that level IV of this skill is glitched, and functions as if it were actually level V.

The chance for bleed-thru is fairly small (pulling a random number out of the air I'd say it was under 10%, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 20% or higher).

I've had bleed-thru while tanking in the danger area for several minutes, and it is not common to survive in that condition (less than 5% shield with TSM 4) for that long, especially in PvP.

For the sake of deceased horses, train TSM 4 and never think of the skill again.

Nevermind... forget I asked. I'll just test it myself sometime with a mission and post the results here later.

If conserving cap is your concern you don't really need to be worried about this anyway. If you are running an active shield tank it only makes a little differene when you turn your booster on as long as you are missing at least as many HP as it restores, and if you really want to optimize you cap usage you will want to take advantage of peak regen which happens at around 30%.

Of course if you are that aggressive that you try to trn it off entirely for the mission as early as possible and dps tank for as long as possible...why?

I think you need to lay off the hooch.

You need to read the description as well.

"Reduces the chance of damage penetrating the shield when it falls below 25% by 5% per skill level, with 0% chance at level 5."

It only lowers the chance of bleed through per level not the threshold at which bleed through can happen.

As for SomeoneStrange 5% (as you at lvl IV) is pretty low and its not mathematically implausible for that 5% to prevent armor damage over 100 different times, makes you lucky but not unrealistic.

Your interpretation of the skill description is incorrect. This has been tested many times, and I can confirm it myself. Forgive the Icelanders for their poor wording.

TSM 0: Bleed-through has a chance to occur below 25% shield
TSM 1: Bleed-through has a chance to occur below 20% shield
TSM 2: Bleed-through has a chance to occur below 15% shield
TSM 3: Bleed-through has a chance to occur below 10% shield
TSM 4: Bleed-through has a chance to occur below 5% shield
TSM 5: There is no chance of bleed-through.

Right, there are plenty guides and forum posts that give the above explanation for TSM. For SomeoneStrange to prove that TSM IV is bugged, he'd have to keep shields above 0% but below 5% for a sustained period of time. Of course, he may want to reconsider running shields low as his standard operating procedure. Maximum passive shield regen occurs at 30% or 35% (don't remember the exact number atm) and is near zero close to 100% and 0%.
