You just know Hollywood is out of ideas when they make a movie about "Battleship", the BOARD GAME. "Yes, that Battleship - the board game where players take turns "shooting" at little plastic boats hidden on little plastic grids. In case you're wondering how that's going to look on the big screen, let me give you the low-down.
Rock Strongjaw is a renegade Navy man who ****es off Admiral Fallout by putting the schmooze on his daughter. Then he goes off to sea with his brother and rival, Broody McBlueeyes, where they meet giant robot aliens. Cue explosions, roll credits and insipid Rihanna song. The end, baby!" Oh, yeah, included is the trailer. Liam Neeson is in it. What... the... f...udge ? |

Tic-tac-toe is in the public domain. No way they would do a movie on it due to a lack of copyright. OTOH, Disney's lawyers could probably find a way to copyright tic-tac-toe and sue a *lot* of people after releasing the movie... |

It's almost like Hollywood hasn't been cranking out cheap action flicks with 95% of their budget in the CGI for ages...
Nothing particularly new about this, tbh. |

Thats the thing about Battleship. The term is so vague....
In order to be a Battleship movie the movie needs to Involve ships.... and that's it!
Sort of like the Pirates of the Caribbean only needed to involve pirates.
Hell if you relabeled Saving Private Ryan as Medal of Honor. It would work just as well.
That being said, the trailer makes it seem like a Michale Bay-esc crap CGI-athon. I'd hate it on that grounds alone.

Errr, no. If you saw the trailer, you would have noticed that the ships' radar is jammed, it looks like some kind of bubble was placed over a vast expanse of ocean, and the aliens submerged. In other words, the navy is going to be shooting blindly into the ocean in a limited area (grid) in an attempt to hit the aliens. I thought that reading Gygax's combat scenes (which matched D&D's combat round for round) in his Gord the Rogue novels was painful enough. Making a movie around Battleship's rules/mechanics just sounds painfully difficult to sell to the audience. |

No it really wasn't. What did it have to make it good? Great aliens, magnificient scenery, good acting, amazing action? It had none of that, it was mediocre across the board. It's yet another Suckerpunch where Hollywood throws together a couple of interesting tidbits and watch to see what sticks, sorta like what you did as a kid, the industry is regressing. |
