I have one of these on my Drake, but I am not getting how these work. I took it into a mission and had it activated but nothing seemed to happen.

At what point is an enemy considered hostile? I expected that it would be when they have the red box around them, but the ATS just ignored those mobs altogether.

You activate it on a enemy. Then it locks the enemy, but he never sees you yellow box.

^^ this is wrong, he is talking about a 'passive targetter' not an 'autotargetter'.

I believe it allows your ship to handel more target locks, and you may not see a difference if your skilss don't allow for further locks however this point I'm not sure of. Only time I ever used on was to allow my mission fring to handel 5 instead of 3 targets, however at the time my skills allowed for 6 targets so I'm actualy intrrested to find out if it allows you to surpass your skill limit.

If it's not activated it increases the number of targets your ships targeting computer can handle. You still need the targeting skill high enough to make use of that.

If you activate it it targets back any ship that is targeting you - provided it actually is in targeting range. If a ship targets you and only then flies into your targeting range the auto targeter does not target it.

This.

The functionality it provides when activated can pretty much be replicated in the game's settings menu. Even so, I don't recommend that. I don't even recommend activating the module.

Well ... when I tried the things several years ago - they would target anything they thought was hostile ... including evil gas clouds and structures ...

After that ... I haven't used them so they could have changed.

Another problem with letting the ships AI do your targeting for you - is that it may not target what you want to target even among enemy ships.

I've had similar experiences recently with F.O.F. missiles. Fighting Guristas you get jammed a lot and the F.O.F. missiles don't require a target lock. You simply turn them on and they'll start launching against hostiles. Again though ... I got in range of a hostile structure - which the missile AI determined was a priority target - so that it was engaging that structure instead of the ships that were shooting at me ... The solution - was to get out of range of that structure at which time the missiles went back to shooting at things that were actually attacking me.

*shrug*

If this isn't it's only function, it's certainly how it's used.
It has niche applications and little else, I wouldn't recommend it for a drake.
Some ships like the Nightmare pump out so much firepower in missions that targeting becomes the bottle neck.
Useful so you can target a whole cluster of frigs and melt them all at long range with tachyon beams.

Logistic ships, logistic-fit carriers and recons are some other ships which would benefit from being able to lock more targets than the ship sensors allow them to.
