Would mining in a Battleship in lowsec be safe? Have any of you got any experience or tips?

I'm thinking of fitting out a battle-ship with good warp stability so that I can simply soak up the damage and warp out if need be.

Answer to first question: NO

Answer to second question: Yes

You would need to fit at LEAST two Warp Stabs on the BS, but that will NOT help when at least 4 or 5 ships ALL with Scrams and Disruptors arrive and your Stabs are useless and may as well not exist. And you WILL be beset upon by 4 or 5 ships.

You CAN do it with a support team, but then you are splitting the meager amount of profit from using a BS to mine with them, so it is NOT going to make you a single ISK as you must pay them to avoid being a real cad.

If your point is to mine Low Sec ores like Hemorphite, Hedbergite, and Jaspet, you are MUCH beter off finding and mining them in High Sec gravimetric Sites.

I have 350,000 Nocx from all of 2 days of mining these grav sites. BTW

Really, BS mining MAY have been viable in EVE's earlier days, but now it's suicidal.

added:

You really need 2 toons and form Hulk Pilot/Orca Pilot symbiotic combo. It's the ONLY way really, and stick to those high sec sites, so train those Exploration Skills.

So it sounds like a bad idea then?

Seriously though - thanks for the frank advice.

Mining in a battleship. The carebear is strong in this one.

It's suicidal to say the least, don't do it. If you must mine low sec ores, some missions have astroids in them, if i remember correctly even ones that usually spawned in low sec, if I remember correctly. It's been quite a few years since I looked at what kind of astroids they were, if I am right just keep grabbing lv1 missions till you get the one with the roids you want and mine them to your hearts content.

YES ! Once you qualify for Level 4 Missions, some of the Combat Sites do indeed have the Low Sec ores as well.

I left them out of the picture as I did not get the impression that Combat was your thing.

But they are there if you want to go that route as well.

If mining in lowsec is something you REALLY want to do, there is a way.

Think the ores in higsec grav sites are nice? How about scanning down some of those lowsec grav sites? Pirates would need a probe to find you and if you're smart on the Dscan, you can see them coming. If they find your site, it becomes a waiting game where you best jump clone to highsec for the day or wait for them to leave.

I wouldn't recommend this, though. Smuggling a battleship into lowsec is not an easy task.

Heck, you can mine in lowsec in a hulk if you want, though I personally am paranoid and use a covetor on the rare occasions I do this. You just have to take precautions. Most importantly, be in an out of the way system that doesn't get traffic. Also, keep aligned. Be ready to dock anytime someone comes into local.

OH.....MY....GOD......there is so much WRONG here..........

First off, if you have just jumped to your clone, I'm sorry, but you CANNOT JUMP FOR 24 HOURS. THIS is NOT an escape route !!

Smuggling a Battleship IS easy to get into Low Sec. You just jump through the gate. That's REAL hard isn't it ?

BUT after you jump (not smuggle yourself) into low sec, use the Cloak/MWD Trick to get around.

Wow.

Keep aligned to WHAT exactly in Low Sec ? It had BEST be a Safe Spot one has self-created........and Bookmarks are a bit of a trick to align too and I am not going into that here.

DOCKING for 'Safety' is the LAST thing one wants to do in Low Sec. You WILL NOT be able to Un-Dock again without assistance if anyone is on Local at all.

Sorry OP....these folks are either know-nothings or are trying to get you killed.

Incorrect, at least in my experience. If you are in a quiet or better yet dead-end system as I suggested (or at least one where you know who the regulars are), you can just dock. Most roaming pirates won't have the patience to sit around hoping you undock. Keep in mind, if you docked immediately when they came into local, they have no idea what you were doing, whether you are afk, etc. The just don't generally sitting around hoping a lone player will be silly enough to undock.

For starters, Low-sec isn't as dangerous as many lead others to believe. That having been said, you will be in systems with other players that would like very much to see your ship explode, so you will need to prepare accordingly.

Wedding Peach hipped you to the proper strategy, grav sites are what you are going to want to mine if you are looking to have a good time. I haven't mined in oh-so-long I can't give you proper first hand advice to this specific scenario, but I can try to infer some tips from past experience.

You are going to want a hauling alt, especially because you are planning on mining in a BS. This is not a huge hurdle, though sadly the Industrial ship skills cannot be trained on trial accounts (obvious reasons are obvious). If you plan on solo-mining then you might want to consider bringing an industrial ship into system with you and docking it up. When your jet-can is full switch ships and haul the ore back to station.

It might hurt your CPU and thus limit the number of Mining Upgrades you can fit, but a cloak very well might be the most important mod for you to fit after the Miner II's. When someone pops up in-system who looks suspicious warp to a safe spot (or a warpable bookmark still on grid with your grav site) and cloak up. Mining is nice in comparison to, say, combat complexes because you pause at any time you want without running the risk of the site vanishing on you, and you can pick right back up where you left when things cool off.

Learn how to operate in low-sec. Have decently placed safe-spots, on-grid bookmarks, and station instant undocks. These things take prep-time but they also make you many many times safer and more capable of operating at a rate where your time is worthwile.

That is mostly what I can think of for now. Get ready to get used to looking at D-scan all the time.

Why mine in a BS at all? use a covetor, it has nearly as much mining capability as a hulk, and it's much much cheaper than a battleship. I have to agree though if you're mining in low, you'll want to go find yourself a nice grav site.
Get an alt there as well, they will be hauling the ore for you, and generally sit in a BC to take care of any big rats that might show up, a BS rat is a bit too much for a covetor to solo. ( hulks can do it, but they're too expensive imho for this ).

Or just mine Veldspar, sell the trit, and buy back any of the minerals you are needing.

Just saying...

oh right, if you mine minerals they are free!

Yeah... selecting "Align to" instead of "warp to" from the right click context menu is quite tricky.

Slipping a station camp in a BS isn't really all that difficult if you have an above-room-temperature IQ.

Unless you're doing it for the thrill, stick to high-sec or go to 0.0 or wormholes.
Low-sec ore can be found in High-sec with Exploration, so if you're after mining low-sec ores, grab an exploration ship and start probing High-sec for grav sites.
In High-sec you'll be able to use a Hulk and use it at 100% efficiency, maximizing your yield.

In low-sec a Hulk is a magnet for attention, even from non pirates.
Although you could put a cloak on it and use two strips, you'd spent more time cloaked than mining as soon as you see the first combat probe on directional.

Mining in low-sec in a Battleship is not worth it, you'll only be a sitting duck mining at sub-par yields.

For anything better than low-sec ore (including low-sec grav sites) you're better off going to 0.0 or finding a wormhole.
Both offer far better ores and generally less risk, especially if the 0.0 or wormhole space is friendly.

"Quiet" systems do not exist. A 'quiet" system can be flooded with 75 Toons-on-Roam at any second.

Just talk to the folks in Antem how willing they are to wait outside of a station for anything to emerge.

This is the same mentality that gets ships blow up for thinking: "It's 4 hours later, there is NO WAY they are still at that gate waiting!". Laughing

Plus....you weirdly seem to be implying that the Player is already in Station or something. I don't think you thought before moving fingers to typewriter. Neutral

Nobody asked how to do it. You asserted that docking for safety is the last thing anyone should do in low sec, because it would trap you. In response to that statement, I asserted that you're a moron, because escaping a low-sec station camp is utterly trivial. The "how" of the matter is irrelevant; the crux was the fact that you're a dolt (as was previously demonstrated by your statement that "right click -> align to" is "a bit of a trick" Laughing).
