Yes, this is TL, tl;dr at the bottom.

Just to give an idea, I've been working with computers since the dark ages and have always been quite keen on performance; I build my own PC's, good components, clean installs, no bloat ware and always do a lot of maintenance and culling of programs and whatnot.

Apart from that, I use defrag a lot and always have. Thing is that around the time of XP somehow defrag stopped being that successful. Sure, it juggled around the files a bit and looked rather busy but I never really got the feeling that it went down to the nitty gritty, the system files and all that, and took REALLY care of my HDD's.

Over the years I've tried different defrag programs, the built in ones obviously, but also O&O, Auslogic, Diskkeeper, PerfectDisk and many more. But they never really did seem to work that well, I actually got the feeling that doing multiple defrags made it worse, yes I know this sounds silly. I mostly got the idea that those programs went "oooh look at me, look at my beautiful interface and all that, here! I'm clowning around with your files a bit and doesn't it look nice! What, you want me to actually take REAL care of your files? No sorry, can't do. I just do the simple stuff".

So I've kept looking, enter a little and rather nerdy looking program called MyDefrag. It's tiny at just 2MB, the website looks amateurish and it's freeware. Surely this can't compete with the mighty PerfectDisks and O&Os of this world, right? When I started it it even gave me some error about one of it's script files so this has to be bad.

But I gave it an honest test, first of all I defragged my OS and data drives with my current defrag (Auslogics, quite decent) which was done quite quickly as I defrag a lot (I never really trust defrag programs that are done quickly, always gives me the nagging suspicion they didn't actually do that much). Then I started MyDefrag and... it gave me several defrag options, hmm that sounds interesting. Lets do my OS partition with the "system disk monthly" setting, and so it went to work.

And it went "holy CRAP, your system files are a fekking MESS. I'll be busy here for quite a bit so you just go do something else for the next 45 minutes because god damn, this needs some work!". That already made me happy and after having done my C partition I also had it do my other drives and the results are amazing. It is BY FAR the best defrag program I've ever tried, it's seriously that good. I suggest you all use it.

tl;dr

Forget any and all other defrag programs you've ever used, regardless of cost, gimmicks, cool interface, big corporate name or reviews you've seen elsewhere. MyDefrag beats them all and it's free, get it here. The only option it's really missing is the "shut down PC after completion" but I'll happily do without that with results this good.

Auslogic didn't seem to work? I doubt that. I've used it for a few years now and it gets the job done. I love it.

Edit: So, because it told you things were a mess, that you had never noticed before, and then took 45 minutes to do its job, it's awesome?

I'll take that with a pinch of salt.

Auslogic has been my choice for a while after having tried many others, so I'm with you on that. Just drop your doubts for a few minutes and go try MyDefrag, then come back with the results. You'll find your PC boots MUCH faster and is much more responsive (even after a clean boot where it has to load everything instead of using memory), it's great.

Trust me :)

My current system has been installed for <5 days. Just did a clean wipe to install a new mobo, cpu and ram, so nothing needs defragged yet.

Yes it takes a few months to get bogged down. I used to do a full reinstall every 10-12 months or so (I'm THAT much of a nitpicking nerd) but have become more tolerant with age.
