So I made a new character after Incarna came out just to give the tutorial system a whirl. The tidbit about my original self being euthanised got me to thinking, since my main (this character) was established before any popular fads of euthanasia existed I'm going to hope that my bio is still accurate. It seems as though that if regular people can get all manner of implant, that capsuleers should be able to go through the conversion with nanite theropy or what have you. I can understand how setting everything up and euthanising the orignal body to get past recovery times would be a nice thing...I just can't get past the fact that the consciousness is attached to the brain and being not the concept, being replaced by a shadow isn't a comforting thought, and if jump clones can have memories, etc uploaded without having to be replaced then why not keep your original body somewhere safe, so if you ever wanted to quit flying you can just wake up in your original self and have your capsuleer exploits uploaded and you go on as if it were a dream (but your wallet is probably much heavier). *Tried to fix what I could grammaticaly, typing with a phone is hard.

Thoughts, opinions?

I suspect at this point in the future, there are many people who just do not care. There are people willing to put aside all philosophical questions of life and death in the pursuit of wealth... they become capsuleers.

I think it kind of makes sense that immortality has a price. To be able to move fluidly between bodies across vast distances of space, you would have to first rid yourself of the idea that consciousness is somehow anchored to one's body. You are an information life form now. The body you use at a given moment is just hardware. When the technology gets there you might be just as happy in a robot body, or a computer box.

Besides, I don't think your original, unmodified body could handle uploading of skills and memories anyway. You'd need your brain rewired to the extent it might not be considered "original".

All I know is that Myxx's original body lies in frozen stasis somewhere very, very secure that she can access any time she wants to jump back to it. Not letting that one go. Anyone who wants to claim otherwise for themselves, cool. Not for me. I don't like it. I'm going with that my character pre-dates this practice by years, because so far she does.

Shocked

You've used the wrong word there. Euthanasia, is act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. It is assisted suicide or mercy killing.

Do you mean anaesthesia, being rendered unconsciousness for a medical procedures/operations?

Mmmm, nope, Aura specifically says "euthanised". Which in someways makes sense, because if the character has just been implanted with various things, I would assume there would be quite a bit of recovery time, even with nanite theropy. So instead of making the newly indoctrinated capsuleer suffer while recovering/flying, easier to just hop into the first clone...makes sense in someways, but I guess I'm one of those people that would rather enjoy the adventure myself than let a copy of me have the fun. Because it's not all about money.

Also: +1 to Myxx

This was brought up in general a while ago:

In a related thread, dropbear has a lot to say on it: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1519536&page=1#8

An excerpt:

Quote:

Firstly, this is not a retcon. What that means is we've not suddenly defined what has happened in the last eight years. Instead, we're just defining how things work now (where "now" means, once Incarna's New Player Experience launches). I can't say where, how or when we'll bring that out in the canon, just that it's our intent to do so at some point, and make clear (beyond this forum post) that there was a change in the way capsuleers graduated.

We're doing this for one simple reason: We don't want to pull the rug out from underneath people with an unnecessary retcon. Simple as that. It's avoidable, so we're avoiding it.
