I've watched tons of videos that CCP has made about eve. I'm curious what programs are used to make the fleet fights like that one they just put out in "i was there". Just curious how labor intensive and complex making something like that is? It seems like it would be alot of fun.

Depending on the video (i.e. Cinematic or Gameplay) we'll either use some in-house software (Jessica), or simply fire up the client and record from there.

Jessica allows us to pull in any object or effect that exists in-game and in most cases animate them. It's not really designed for this at all, so it can be quite a lot more tricky to use compared to your normal 3D suite such as Maya (think animation by maths). We still prefer using the Trinity engine for our videos as it maintains the right look and feel for the EVE universe. I think we're very lucky that the EVE client assets are such high fidelity that we can do this!

Of course there's color grading and post effect work done afterwards using software suites (AE etc) to get that cinematic feel where needed.

But yes, it's a lot of fun, I still can't quite believe they call this a job.YARRRR!!

There's more info on trailers in this interview on Massively!

Absolutely - it's like the "I win" button for editing.

Thank you for the very informative replies everyone. As luck would have it i have After Effects from the CS5 suite so i guess i should dust that off and start learning it as i have way too much free time right now (currently unemployed). I have always been interested in making these types of videos as well as scripting events ( i scripted a ton of missions for Freespace 2). I would love to see some more interactive, epic missions, anomalies, ect in eve but that is slightly off topic.

What program would you all recommend to capture gameplay in eve with if i plan to touch up with AE afterwards? fraps? and any suggestions for tutorials or books for AE? is AE classroom in a book any good (was descent for photoshop and dreamweaver)?

Thanks again everyone.

Id love to get my grimy little tractor beams on that Jessica Tool, just to see what one can do when they script ship/camera movements by hand
