Downloaded the auto-patch, got this:

"Shader Model 3 (SM3) support is needed to run this game. Click OK to close the game client."

I'm not going to read through dozens of pages in feedback threads to find the fix. It's CCP's job to make something as important as this a Sticky.

Sure, I'm not using a great computer. It's a Macbook. I probably got it 4 years ago. It's run EVE just fine until now. I don't expect that to change.

I'm in the same boat. I'm running a 2 1/2 year old macbook. I found out by accident that Eve would run on it and it's the only reason I subscribed.

Has been explained many times in many places, a few older graphics cards (including the X1600, and the integrated graphics chip in the older MacBooks) support SM3 on Windows, not on Mac. Hence why those graphics cards are no longer listed as being supported by the Mac client.

That said, as the Windows client download keeps failing on my Windows partition, it looks like I'll be unsubbing for a while.

I haven't loaded up my windows partition in ages, but I won't bother if you're having issues with it.

As for my graphics card no longer being supported, that's bull****. Everything has been fine and dandy up until now. The patch is getting HORRIBLE reviews by a majority of pilots. I don't understand how they would think this was a good idea. They're alienating people who don't buy a new computer every 2 years. I suggest they change it back and acknowledge a loss when they see it. This is the worst ****-up I've seen for EVE.

Macbook Pro user. Laptop maybe 5 years old. I used to be able to afk mine in Eve online and also run 25 man raids in WoW at the same time while using Vent over a year ago. With each expansion I have had to turn down graphics in-game more and more in order for Eve to run smoothly and I stopped being able to run both games smoothly a while back too.

What I think is that CCP is so disconnected from it's player base. They got rich and everyone there pretty much owns top dollar high end equipment that each of them use for personal use. They probably figured to hell with anyone who doesn't update their equipment as regularly as CCP. Well I'm sorry. Not all of us can buy new comps every 6 months. Hell I have to finance my Macbook Pro for a year so I could get it.

Just because a super computer has better graphics doesn't mean that a super computer needs to be the minimum sys requirement. Slow down for the rest of us. Forget trying to improve graphics.......WORK ON LAG!

In the same boat as you, about a 5 year old Macbook Pro, and no longer able to play EVE sadly...

I think it's actually a problem specifically with how I have my XP partition set up, or how XP handles downloads. I just can't be arsed to take the couple hours it would take to fix it.

I didn't realize this was going to happen until today's patch gave me the error message that my MacBook Pro does not support SM3. CCPs warning last fall made it seem as if your computer had to be really old for this to affect it. I never checked. So despite this being an Intel dual core mac, it is really old. Works well enough for everything else I need it for.

I feel bad for those players who don't have an alternative, I hope the new space barbies bring in the subs to replace those they lose due to incompatible hardware.

they are going to lose a lot of people this way.... i'm not going to buy a new macbookpro and imac just to run eve.. ugh

I knew it was likely but hoped that I'd be able to switch off the CQ & get around it.....

Sadly not

Due to personal situation, can not afford to upgrade in the near future :(

Clearly spelled out in the patch notes ?!

I see CCP's point but for the love of ...., spell it out for the client base in advance!

@CCP

Think you need to remove the following statement from the System Requirements Page.

'Please note: Macs with the ATI X1600 or ATI X1900 graphics chipset are not supported, but may be able to still run the game by disabling the "Load Station Environment" option.'

As you get the following popup box when running an uncompilable card:-

Outdated graphics card detected
Shader Model 3 (SM3) support is needed to run this game. Click OK to close the game client.

I have an older Mac Pro I think the first Intel one with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The product page from NVIDIA says that it supports SM03. SO why is it not running. I hope they fix it.

Mad Hops lmfao I remember getting flammed by you earlier today on another forum. This has got to be the best early Christmas present. Cant play eh? Awww... that's too bad.

This is pretty funny you have to admit:Your graphics card is outdated and you have a laptop. (GC is permanently attached to your motherboard)

The solution:
In order for eve to work again you have to replace your graphics card which is permanently attached to your motherboard. Laptops work differently than desktops. So your going to have to buy and replace the motherboard also. Your computer only supports shader model 2.0 Another wards find a better computer or quit. Laughing

**Suggests quitting** lmfao
Surprised in all your wisdom you couldn't figure this out. Macs suck.

Yours Truely,

While I understand the sentiments of the many users that have older systems, you need to understand that things move on! You can't expect CCP (or any other game developer) to come up with new and shiny things that will still run on your (sorry to say, but that's how it is) ancient hardware. And five years ARE ancient in the computer world. What I do completely understand is that CCP should let you guys still play, when the station environment is turned off. If Blizzard can make it work, CCP should be able as well.

Well, let's hope for a patch.

The ****ing irony is this:

My iMac ran eve on 80fps outside station with high settings. (sweet).
My iMac ran eve on 50fps inside station with high settings. (sweet, although this was before the ui patch, which forced me to either buy outside station and fit inside, or get a corp mate to buy and fit a ship which i would give them isk plus tip for the hassle).

Now because my iMac graphics card doesnt support sm3, even though it ran everything on high at 80fps and more, I am now stuck using my fathers PC which is maxed at 30FPS outside the station, and 30FPS in station with the environment turned on.

The irony of a non sm3 card performing better than one of the latest gcards that run sm3.

I would install eve to my brand new macbook pro, but i don't want it to go up like hiroshima when i dock a ship in the station.

I am all for progress, and i realise that in order to get eve to where they want it they need to increase the hardware needed.

But they ****ed over a good percentage of EVE players, who started eve mainly because their Mac could run it. I know a lot of people who can't play eve now and have all their assets and isk locked out, because CCP simply couldnt use a port or something else for them to change the station.

I've been playing eve for 2 years now, and i'm bitter as **** so i guess i am now a vet.

I disagree, EVE is not played by the same bleeding edge gamers that play COD and all those other bleeding edge graphics intensive games which have little going for them other than good graphics. Some play EVE because they enjoy the social aspects of it, the industry aspects, trading aspects, role playing, PVP engagments etc... these activities do not require intense graphics as much as FPS, driving games etc. The player base is different, and CCP have lost track of who their player base is somewhere along the way

Also... my iMac which is presumably does support shader 3 or whatever run Incarna SO slowly that the game is pretty close to unusable. I have now turned off CQ and its running much better; what's completely ******ed about this is I am able to turn off all these features that require shader 3 by unticking a box, but those that do not have hardware that supports shader 3 cannot play EVE anymore

And... why does it take such intense graphics hardware to render a room with a single character walking around in it? The engine must really suck; with graphics turned to "performance" the quality of graphics experienced in Quake 3 is better than this and thats 10+ years old and runs at hundreds of FPS not 10

My apologies, but I DO hope that CCP fixes the problem by just not turning CQ on for the people that have older hardware. And please, do not compare the minimalistic graphics of Q3 with the massive polygon count and high-rez textures that CQ delivers (not to mention procedural shaders and all the other goodies). There IS a big difference. I know that due to the Cider abomination that runs a virtually unmodified Windows-EVE on our Macs we get abysmal performance compared to our Windows brethren (EVE on Windows delivers twice as many fps in CQ as on OS X), so that's another thing we have to take into account.

Please understand that I agree with you to a point. CCP should get rid of Cider and give us a REAL port of EVE to the Mac. That probably would alleviate a lot of problems.

With the graphics set to anything but "performance" sure, it must look very pretty with those high res textures and polygons and what not. But with graphics turned to "performance" it looks horrid; and as such should run well... but it doesn't, it looks worse and performs worse than other content in a different engine
