Nice story, sounds like you really enjoyed yourself.

I once knew a couple of AF pilots, years ago, who used to team up and run L4 missions occasionally. If only I could have flown something better than a Bantam, I'd have taken them up on their offer to join in. Sad

One of my friends dropped me link to this thread, so sorry for necroposting and breaking in. I think all of you guys underestimate how powerful frigates are, even in scope of PVE and this topic.

There's in-depth guide Mosquito Almighty which provides some good insight into l4 running using faction/pirate/assault frigates and l5 using stealth bombers. Bad news for you - it's written in russian, good - it is written and maintained by me, so i can translate or briefly describe couple of paragraphs.

When you manage to do it as title says - frigate hulls - please repost, will be good reading.

Actually, most of l5 missions are doable in solo SB. I'm not running missions vs non-pirate factions (empire nations, mordus, etc) to keep faction standings neutral. When talking about pirate l5s - the only mission which i consider almost impossible to do is described by OP fate of angels (actually i completed it once, but it was a great risk and took me more than 3 hours, so it just doesn't worth time) and probably prison break (also hard to complete, i tried couple of times and it seemed to be doable, but was bugged).

Couple of missions, one of the easiest and one of the hardest, from my perspective:

Rogue spy 1/3
Get purifier, fit it from anything like this:

[Purifier, Rogue Drones (Cheap)]

Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo
[Empty High slot]
Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo

1MN Afterburner II
Medium Shield Extender II
Small Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 25

Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Co-Processor II

Small Warhead Calefaction Catalyst I
Small Ancillary Current Router I

to this:

[Purifier, Rogue Drones (Expensive)]

Dread Guristas Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo
'Smokescreen' Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Dread Guristas Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo
[Empty High slot]
Dread Guristas Siege Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo

Coreli A-Type 1MN Afterburner
Caldari Navy Medium Shield Extender
Micro Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 25

Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System
Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System
Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System

Small Bay Loading Accelerator II
Small Warhead Flare Catalyst II

Warp to the mission, burn to the structure, with 30-degree slope upwards, when you're 60 km away from the structure - you should get message about incoming drones. Switch direction and burn vertically upwards. Soon you'll see spawning drones, our 1st target group (3-4 BS) is located above warp-in point. When it appears - wipe them out. Last death should trigger spawning of second target group (3-4 BC), they also should be easy to kill. Killing second group triggers appearing of our 3rd and last target group - yet another bunch of 'female' battleships, and when you're done with last one, mission is completed.

Sounds simple, but there're also several problems here:
1) Heavy neuting. If you were not cloaked when neuts appeared, it will be even worse as they hit you asynchronously (if you were, it will be like all 4 neuts hit you at 0 second, t2 neuts at 5 seconds, then all 4 again at 10 seconds, etc). It's countered by using cap booster - as you can see, capbooster cycle equals to cycle of AB. When you're at zero cap, hit capbooster activation key and ab activation key. Two things matter here: sequence of pressed keys (client sends activation requests in the order it got them from you, this is required to have cap from cap booster for ab activation) and speed (both modules must be activated before the begninning of next server tick of ~1 second, so try to hit second key in less than 50-100ms after hitting first, it is necessary to make sure neuting can't occur after cap booster and before ab activation).

If you did everything properly, 10-12 cap booster activations (25 batteries) will result in 2.5-3 mins of activated ab without any need to control it from your side.
2) Tacklers - they're slow as hell, just ab in circles around your target spawn and they shouldn't be a problem. Possible to shoot them down, but not worth it - a bunch of faster and tougher tacklers will appear.
3) 2nd spawn are BCs, they shouldn't be a problem unless you're reloading cap boosted in mmid-fight with them.
4) Cruise sentries slowly eat you shield, but they're far from dealing enough damage to break your shield regen.

All-in-all this mission takes 7-8 minutes from warp-in to warp-out (and whole rogue drones series takes 1 hour from accepting 1st to completing 3rd).

Operation Wyrmslayer
[Nemesis, Operation Wyrm]

Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Inferno Torpedo
'Smokescreen' Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Inferno Torpedo
[Empty High slot]
Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Inferno Torpedo

Coreli A-Type 1MN Afterburner
Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range
Invulnerability Field II
Medium 'Canyon' Shield Extender

Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System
Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System

Small Bay Loading Accelerator II
Small Ancillary Current Router I

(t2 launchers because i use this fit on both wyrmslayer and wyrmsbane, where it's rational to use rages, for purely wyrmslayer DG/CN/KN sieges are better)

This mission can be completed in at least 3 ways, i'll cite only fastest and hardest of them (remaining 2 are wyrmsbane-style and using long-range fit). Warp to the mission within 6 km, get both stasis towers into the torp operational range, align somewhere, making sure you have max angular speed vs both npc groups (ie align downwards/upwards), decloak, overheat/activate ab, lock stasis towers, overload and activate sieges, activate sensor booster, overload and activate invul. Now, send 4 torp packs to 1st tower, 4 - to 2nd, your goal is to stay alive with more than 20-30% of shield (and have none of your modules burnt to death), which is from my perspective one of the hardest moments of the mission. After killing both stasis towers, switch to heavy sentries (3 volleys for each of them), but stop shooting when first t1 serp frig appears (coreli w/o other affixes) - now they're your new target. After killing several t1 frigs shadow serpentis BS appears, it's your final target - kill it, bookmark wreck and warp out.

Again, sounds easy? Actually, no, because you have to:
1) Care about your lock range. Even with sebo, lock is damped down to 36km in worst cases
2) Tacklers. They're pretty fast and have long point of 20km+ - maneuver so that they can't reach you.
3) ****ton of NPCs and static missile turrets - you always have to maneuver to keep max angular speed vs cruiser-sized and bigger ships, watch your linear speed to get min damage from missiles and keep range versus frigates, and either be close to or far away from serp rail hacs (sometimes they hit you hard in mid-range)
4) The most important part - you have to kill SS BS before you're on approx. 7-minute mark (counted from your first warp-in to the mission), as second pair of stasis webs and bunch of cruise missile sentries will spawn - which means if you're not already aligned to some object or pointed, you're dead. That is, you get all the rewards (reward 10m isk + 110k lp, 10-15m bounties, loot from SS wreck) in just 7 minutes + traveltime. My personal record for loot is vindi BPC + SS TC, which is 1b+. With current isk:lp conversion rate 120m-2b isn't bad for 10m of your time, right?

Wyrmsbane-style completion includes killing all of heavy sentries, and pulling npcs from the stronghold before second pair of webs spawn (after that you can rewarp and finish them easily)
Longrange style involves tens of minutes of cloaked cruising to proper positions and killing stasis webs from safe distance.

Text above just describes general 'playflow', cba to translate any non-standard problems which may arise during that and their workarounds. It's really suprising to me that nobody has tried and written some kind of howto at official eve-o forums. Just know - it is possible; apply some isk investments, piloting skills and your head - and you'll be able to run them like some other guys like me do. Besides being good source of cash, such approach to PvE is alot of fun. It is always risky, but actual risk always depends on how you handle your ship (i lost only 3 SBs at lvl 5, approximately 2 years ago, when just began my experiments with it, and no losses since that moment).

With release of incarna, when ccp fixed tower-noaggro-exploit (towers didn't aggro you when you decloaked withing their operational range) it became even more hardcore: lot of people stopped soloing l5s this way, so i can't promise this approach will work for any average Joe. If you're able to deal with it properly - you can be sure that you're elite in some kind.

Thanks for posting this very full and descriptive account. It's quite inspiring.

Would you by any chance have a video of you completing the mission?

I think i can get to try capturing wyrmslayer (to show how it may look in the most adrenaline mission) next week. Just try - because i'm an absolute zero in capturing video, besides i'm running eve on my laptop under linux - not sure how good hardware and software will handle this task.

You could use Google Translate and update the translations it performs. I had to refresh the page a couple times to get most of it, but it could still use some help with some of the words.

Oh and nice read btw Very Happy

Capturing video turned out to be easier than i expected. As agents offer other missions much more often than Wyrmslayer, drones 1/3 video first (capturing was easy, but ogv-output only which resulted in quite big file size and it doesn't look very smooth in the end, but i think will do as proof of concept):

Youtube (should become full hd in time)
Failed to upload to eve-files, always stucks at 45% (around 105 MiB)

Not an ideal play-through, ****ed up two times - wasted 1 volley (didn't pay enough attention to eve) and 1 cap booster cycle (it happens sometimes, the faster you hit cb-ab activation, the less often it happens)

ps I have killed one of these hulks, which were on scanner - and that's right after mission, without having a point. The real sleepers dwell in belts, not in w-space, heh.

I've already checked it - google translate fails when it comes to slang and eve-specific word combinations. I don't think it's unreal for me to translate whole guide, but it's a way too much text to deal with it as i'm extremely occupied in RL. Besides, it's much more fun when you're developing fits, mission running tactics yourself (and they vary from mission to mission really greatly) - personally for me, such thing (developing something non-standard, be it pvp- or industry-related) gives the most fun compared to anything else.

Holy crap ... the OP makes me sick with the RP.

And how is it doing a lvl 5 mission with only frigs when you have drake tanking with logiship support ?

RP-troll aint even amusing :(

Wyrmslayer, youtube

This time i was lucky, almost no turret hits (so it doesn't look risky), but actually this mission has pretty high requirements to skills, equipment and piloting skill - which is almost opposite to Rogue Spy from previous post.

Now, apply your imagination and try to find ways how you can complete other missions Razz
