Sooooo much of this asinine Dust vs Eve, platform debating is thoroughly and deeply rooted in simple prejudice. Console gamers hatin' on PC nerds, PC nerds hatin' on console gamers, everyone talking about "the other guy" with disgust and disdain. People crying fail cause it didnt turn out how they wanted.
You're absolutely right, there will be those that will play Dust, and hate it. Hate that there is no automatic health regen when you duck behind cover, hate the thought of paying for every bullet they fire, hate that there is consequences to suicide leeroying your character into a match, consequences if you're a jerk who calls everyone lower than you in score a f a g and ends up with no corpmates, no friends.
CCP isn't after the fratboy COD/Halo market. They're offering a new experience to a yet unsurfaced gamer group - console gamers who crave MORE meaning and value from their game design. Dust's following will take time, but it will steadily grow if the design is solid, just as Eve has.
There is a reason that EvE is continuing to grow in players at the time in its lifespan that other MMO's start to die off...its the innovative sandbox design. Dust will be no different.
Why do you want Dust to appeal to the masses? I doubt you would argue that Incarna is fail cause there is no /dance to attract WoW players and thus will be a flop. Why treat Dust any different?
The assumption that the only players who will play Dust are the ones that will ditch it when the next shooter comes along is re-donkulous.
