I understand the general idea behind why some ships are better at armor tanking and some at shield based upon their low/med slots, but what are some of the ways you can tell a ship would be a good passive tank fit (like the drake) vs an active tank. Also, is it easy to take some ships and switch them? Like my Myrmidon for gas harvesting uses cargohold expanders so I can fit one cloud in it, but I don't have room then for an armor tank. Would it be alright to throw some shield resistance modules and an shield booster if I have to deal with sleepers or should I just save one slot for a armor repairer due to the battlecruiser bonus for the Myrm?

Another thing I noticed was that sometimes my tank would far exceed the dps of whatever I was fighting. Do many of you at that point switch to modules that will boost your dps/tracking/speed?

To tell if a ship can put up a good alternative tank, you should look at(in EFT)/know the traditional, bonus-using fit for that ship (and how it performs ingame), and a similarly traditional fit for a ship that does the other kind of tanking. So see an active armour myrm and a passive shield drake, then you can tell if your alternative myrm fit's numbers are up to scratch (in this case, could well be).

Sometimes 4+ module armour tankers can do similar ehp shield fits with just 1 or 2 mods, because rigs can cover the resist/ehp holes, and the lows can be packed with dps mods and nanos for speed to avoid fire rather than directly tank it. Of course it also depends what weapons you're bringing and if they need those midslots for tackle/ewar to be any use, or if the speed helps more. Even removing armour rigs (for dps/whatever rigs) helps with speed.

Fun fact, a full passive drake with purgers, 2 invulnerability, lows filled with sprs and no bcs gives 235 hp/s peak regen. Similarily fit passive Myrm with 3 invulnerability gives 350 hp/s peak regen.

True, BUT you have failed to take cap into account. To get that level of regen on a Myrm you need to pack in 6 SPRs, no way in hell will you be able to run 3 invulns cap stable with that.

Besides, dropping one or two of those invulns for LSEs further increases your net HP/s gain.

stop thinking that ships and tanks are liinked or tied. Certain ship fill cdrtan roles, certain roles benefit from certain tanks.

Most if not all shios can be decently fit with both armor and shield tanks(even retribution and coercer) but many won't ever fit one of them as there's no role for it.

Vaga is a great example. It's always shieldtanked, not because it's got more mids than lows, but because everything that's not nano/ac/shield is better done in a muninn, cane or fleet stabber.

Myrm is an excellent shieldtanker, and i can find quite a few more roles for a shield myrm than an armor one.

I fit ships so they fit my style of flying.

Many ships have multiple, long accepted, fits.

Nano Cane/Armor Cane
Duel Rep Hype/Shield Hype/Buffer Hype
HAM Drake/Heavy Drake
Etc. Etc.

I know how I fly so I use the variant that best fits ME. To refine my fits...I had to lose a lotta ships.

Options are basicly:
More Tank
More Speed
More DPS
More Utility

I've found shield is superior 99.9% of the time in every way.

For instance,a shield domi can get a better omni tank then a armor domi and be cap stable.
