What I mean is... doesn't it look exactly the same as the old UI? What is changed?

CCP 'Nimbus', such a cute name, I do wonder what makes them pick those names, Horse and Shoelace seem to be very random too.

He took it in honor of a Heroes of M&M 3 demon lord.

It looks almost identical, and works just the same, but they have messed around under the hood to make it run faster, and to make it easier and faster to change, for when they get around to redesigning it to make it a UI that makes it easier to do stuff rather than harder.

It's some old stuff they keep harping on about. Most likely just allowing the rasteriser to be used as a texture for other surfaces, a few changes to calls here and there and a whole lot of marketing and bull**** to make it look like it was actually 'work'.

really, all "carbon" means is CCP pointed a finger and said "we did that."

From what I understand last summer they went through the entire game's code and worked out a lot of the funky stuff but left everything working the same. Some of the funky stuff kept the client running smoothly and client-side performance has had a definite drop since then. Presumably client performance dropped because the refactoring also modularized a lot of the stuff and they had to work out some dirty hacks to get the UI (i.e. overview, brackets, windows, everything not in 3d) to still plug in to the core. The carbon UI appears to be a more robust UI that was made to go with the core, rather than stuck together with pritt stick and duct tape. Once it's live and all the bug reports have been worked out, CCP has indicated that they want to start doing fancier UI stuff like you see in the trailers. I took the carbon UI for a spin on sisi, and was really happy to see some of the pre-refactoring snappiness back. I just dread when the gawdawful UI designers get their incompetent hands on the new toys and try to make things better by breaking them.

Pretty much this. I believe there is a dev blog in the works that will explain it in more detail, so stay tuned.

OZOM!

All kidding aside, IŽm actually looking forward to that. Hopefully this time the ones who started working on that project will stay with it so that weŽll get a coherent design.

Carbon is the framework that the UI is built upon, not the UI itself which is coming this summer [soon]
