Supply vs demand thing =P

With the way the prices are going atm, I might consider buying (with RL ISK) GTCs and selling them.
^ If more people considered this, the price would drop again.

The first reply suggests that there is something evil going on with the prices though, so I don't know.

Yup. Had to put 1 of 2 Alt Accounts in stasis......and I'm not the only one.

Too much ingame money needed now. I'm over a year old player, but with prices dropping and PLEX going up, it's not worth it any longer. Sad I DO need to buy ships and other items that actually contribute to the economy after all.........and allow gameplay.

Anyone else notice the incrementally fewer people on each and every weekend lately ?? Laughing

Thanks for the evidence. The left hand side (these graphs are chronological from right to left)clearly shows the lowering 'spikes'.

ROFL.

You are probably correct, now that PLEX can be broken up into the new "AURA" currency in Incarna, so that folks can wear pretentious monocles and have their ships painted Jungle Red or whatever. Rolling Eyes

"A Pilot License Extension (PLEX) is an item that adds 30 days of game time to your EVE Online account. It can be converted from any game time code and, like any other item, it can be traded on the EVE market.
PLEX offers an alternative way for people to pay for their subscription without the use of our more conventional payment methods. Using PLEX, pilots can earn game time simply by playing EVE."

But it WAS a good thing while it lasted.

My guess is that once the initial fad of "ooh, shiny crap" is gone, PLEX prices will plummet back to relatively low levels.
Probably higher than recent averages, but most likely below current levels.
Just wait and ride out the bubble.

A hour or two after DT today I saw all the Plex for sale in Metropolis and Heimatar (price ~380-390M) get bought up. Plex in those regions is now going for 440M.

Buy 1 or 2 if you haven't and then check where it's at when the AUR store is released.

I don't think they'd want plex to go too much higher at this point and might introduce supply -- the plex for buddy referal option was a move that whay and they might dream up a few others. (by implementing the fractional-plex for smaller cosmetic items they could introduce those into circulation via mission rewards etc...)

The ideal price of plex in terms of their goals does not necessarily need to connect to the where the free market price settles for game-time vs isk .

The ideal price for CCP is based on other factors (which also might conflict slightly)
1) they sell the most plex for the extra $ generated
2) the price minimizes the attractiveness of no sactioned RMT
3) the price sustains a viable free-to-play option that ultimately producers real $ by retaining players who attract friends to the game who use real money (or sustain the same)
4) is realively stable in trend , enough that people are not unnecesarily shocked or angered out of the game or don't get in the habit of delaying purchases with real $ without their purchase volume having increased...(i.e didn't have the isk to lose during that period so only lost cheap ships.. no net increase)

My impression that an isk recieved target is as important to buyers as the last 20 to 30% of the cost in $ . Not always but frequently enough to skew volume, people will decide to buy a carrier with real $ >plex > isk . If they could get a billion isk with 2 plex instead of 3 plex, those type of buyers will only need to spend less $ for their goal.. (the GTC 2plex thing messes a bit with that specific example but over time)

Too high of a price also would tend to widen the gap between players who don't spend $ to buy pvp ships and those that struggle to find the isk for their pvp ships but don't want to spend real $ to get ahead in a game.

The ISK rich people using free to play mode will find that harder, and some might drop accounts to eventually help the market settle, but that price could settle at a higher pice than is optimal for pvp player sense of fairness.

A large portion of the buyers of plex with isk ..free to play.. are making so much isk with their accounts that it would take a far higher price for them to drop many of them .

400 million starts being a lot of ship and a lot of time to grind for an average non-power grinding or industialist pvp'r .. it starts to be unbalancing when expecation of the ships they can fly isn't attainable via their normal game play.

This is the definition of hitting the nail on the head. Indeed there is the long-time player/less than 2-yearish player imbalance in PLEX affordability ATM (not a year ago).

The curent 1.1 Billion/Month for 3 PLEX accounts pretty much halts any real gameplay beyond grinding for those who are not long-time players with ISK to eat for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner...and Second Breakfast.

PLEX also reflects the overall health of the game vs real world economics.

Yes that graph goes from right to left, but the trend since the beginning of this year has been a downward one:

If CCP lowered subscription fees and GTC prices, things would change dramatically.

This happened in Devoid as well, though at time of writing there were no new sell orders.

To elaborate a bit more on my point and add to yours:

- I'm not sure that it is necessarily all about lenghth of play so much as type of play that different people enjoy. It probably does take over a year to learn the ropes and build skills and capital enough to make running a few highly profitable accounts effectively (someone really putting their mind to it could do it far more quickly yet most people are dabbling with lots of other content before finding a few golden gooses with upkeep time/efforts that fit their idea of idle pleasure)
- good point on the mutiple accounts ... lots of 0.0 play is made vastly less tedious with an alt account, in terms of supply and movment and even ratting or small gang fighting is made vastly safer with a scout cloaked on a gate on the approach pipe.... the perception of "have and have not" gets to be an incrmentally larger group for those who kept maybe one of their accounts active with isk>plex
- reduction in force projection abiltity is gong to move more stategy towards parking alts on different fronts to be able to log into alternatively (even with only a couple months of training, a drake pilot could perform at over a 50% damage and tank level and be part of an effective line of defense -- yet those that can maintain a second account and or buy superior skilled characters on the char bazaar for other slots on their account will be more value )
- If an extra $15 buys a well fit tengu instead of a bit more than a maelstrom .. tengu's fleets might be more than a PL extreme... market mavens and people with rl expendable income or game philosphy that make paying a bit of rl to get ahead no sweat can find that an easy step ...but increasingly time consuming to keep up with ratting (and the anomolie change already gave a punchin the stomach in that regard)

So, plex prices going up in terms of hours it would take ratting/lvl4 missiong presents some real problems to game balance...(and if that hours to plex ratio fell too low , you get increasing RMT issues-- thats another long explanation)

Differential earning rates per hour and hours spent at that rate are causing problems in many areas and you can see the developers struggling with this . The difference was always there, but for various reasons, as the game goes on year after year it almost strutucally can't help but widen. As long as diminishing returns is worked into the game, its not too much a problem other than isk rich players becoming ever richer with no place to put their isk that does them any noticable good. But the more average person needs to be able to reach pretty high up that curve.

Exactly.

Started March 2010 with this account and in August I started first alt to be Orca driver, and from September onwards was paying for both with PLEX by only mining, PI, and missions.

Got into Manufacture (mistake !?!? lol) and started 3rd alt for PI and Combat with all 3 humming along on PLEX. Now I MUST take it back down to 2 as I can't afford to even replace an exploded Crane ATM.

Just disappointing to come so far in 15 months and then to actually scale back......... Game working as intended ?? Confused

The increased demand is due to the increased fear of bot bannings. People who have accumulated a significant amount of isk through botting are liquidating their mineral stocks leaving them with large amounts of isk, then instead of leaving their money liquid they are buying up plex due to its tendency to be more stable longterm price wise than isk.

Theres increased demand but I highly doubt it completely correlates with an increase of people paying for their accounts with plex, especially when its getting priced so high that many players who used to be able to pay through plex, no longer can. That would have to mean that for every one player that can no longer pay for his account with plex, there are multiple players who now can.
