Demons In The Dark
Solitude proves less than solitary for racers.

Last Sunday’s event took place in Solitude, an isolated region under Federation sovereignty separated by the lawless territory of Syndicate, with one low security access point through Imperial Aridia. Even for the racers, just getting to the starting point was a pre-race warm up as they eluded gate camps and hungry predators seeking their next meal. It was no surprise that the event started nearly twenty-five minutes behind schedule, and with rumors abound of routes through lawless space, the tension was palpable at the starting location.

Sansha’s Nation made a cameo appearance at Y9G-KS, on a shortcut route between Pertnineere and Conomette, but proved less than effective at dissuading the racers from slipping through their Incursion. While the track led the racers through quiet Solitude and the mostly less-than-secure region of Aridia, Genesis proved to be the major threat at waypoint ten, where racers were required to meet the container at a commonly camped hotspot at the Bherdasopt stargate. “One more volley from the drake and even a few glancing shots from the Legion on field would have put me into structure,” commented Misan Pal’taek, DRT’s newest addition and veteran league racer. Despite a disappointing disqualification last event, Pal’taek returned with a vengeance, finishing in first place ahead of Saikoyu and Nicoletta Mithra. Misan added, “Close call, but at least now I know that the Jaguar can take quite a beating.”

While most of the racers escaped the route despite the thick encampment of hostile capsuleers, only one pilot, Nicoletta Mithra, was forcefully removed from their vessel. Despite this setback, Scuderia Caille’s lead assault frigate jockey re-equipped herself and completed the race to earn a respectable third place finish.

Demon flir continued to dominate the frigate class uncontested for the second straight event this season, with an individual score over one hundred points ahead of his second place rival, NeonFolf, who had made a brief appearance at the start of the season. Competition from Venture’s swath of rookies also appears to have dried up rather quickly, leaving demon to clean up with a flawless record this far this season. With only four races left in this season, he has almost secured a first place championship for himself, and most likely for Scuderia.

With the absence of Searaph in this event, Takashi Kurosawa and Rawr Cristina surged ahead with Kurosawa holding a very shaky one point lead over their Dirtside rival in the individual point standings, despite Dirtside commanding a twenty-eight point team lead over Venture Racing Team. With Cristina’s nearly flawless record this season, many are wondering how the former interceptor champion Kurosawa will fare during the remainder of the season.

Gyra had the opportunity to interview Scuderia Caille's rookie assault frigate pilot and League sponsor, Nicoletta Mithra.

What your profession (as a pod pilot) outside of the racing world?
I come from Mekhios, been born to a family of soldiers, but always wanted to be a monastic. I started to study theology and philosophy in Hedion and for a semester in Caille. I started to study theology and philosophy in Hedion and for a semester in Caille. Then I had to take up the family business when my older brother died and I ended up in the capsuleer program of the Academy. So, I do a lot of work for agents. I was active in the 24th for a time, I still manage my family's business and I'm into t2 module production. Also, I just recently founded a temple. I think that's it. *Nico smiles.*

How did you hear about the Racing League?
Back in the corp that got me started in space I found someone who turned out to become a dear friend to me and as much as a sister. She was as well, incidentally, a great racing fan. Some may probably know her - Chase Starbright. So, that got me interested. She talked a lot about the races and how great they are, you know. *Nico winks.*

Always good to hear. You also became a sponsor. What encouraged you to be one?
Well, since the first time I heard about the league I thought it was a great thing and I wanted to participate. Times and again though I had duties that were preventing me from doing so. And this season started for me with, erm, speedbumps in the way. So, I thought even if you won't race, you will at least participate via sponsoring. After all, I think that the racing league is of great value for this cluster. Different people of all the nations coming together to compete fairly and in the spirit of the sport. So one could say I wanted to give something back.

You had expressed some frustration earlier this season with not being able to fly in Dragonstar Awakened due to their corporate policy. How has your experience been thus far in Scuderia Caille?
Well, it wasn't Dragonstar Awakened's corporate policy, but the policy of Re-Awakened Technologies, to which Kayleigh belonged back then. And yes, I was frustrated. Now... Scuderia has been more than welcoming. Everyone helped me and I had Quin on voice coms during my first race, which I'd have had to tackle alone otherwise. So, I can only speak positively of Scuderia. And with demon flir I have a strong team mate as well. To put it in one sentence: Scuderia is what kept me racing.

You've flown Retributions exclusively in the assault frigate class. What encouraged you to race in assault frigates, and specifically the Retribution?
Oh. Well. I think assault frigates are just fitting me nicely. They're not the fastest ships out there for sure, but they are reliable and tough. And why the Retribution? Honestly, I was inspired to race Amarr ships by Rawr and her Caldari focus. I thought to myself: Why not try this in a shiny golden racing brick? *She grins.*

Your fiercest competition this season has come from Venture Racing Team, a fellow Amarrian and a racing veteran, Saikoyu. She's been piloting Ishkur's almost exclusively herself. What are your thoughts on that?
Well, I noticed that all the competition I have is in the Venture team and of Amarrian descent. I think it fits the Amarrian mentality in general to fly the Assault Frigates. That Saikoyu is piloting Ishkur's mostly certainly has some reasons. It's better suited to racing than the Retribution, I think, but then the Matari ships seem to be even better for speed, I think. Nonetheless, it doesn't matter much to me which ship someone is piloting. What matters is whether it gets the job done.

Do you have any memorable moments from the League events thus far?
Some. For example how I made the finish line in my first race or how I left Saikoyu behind the first time. Also, how I burned out my MWD without having repair nanites in cargo... * smiles and shrugs*

Do you have any advice for new racers or potentials interested in racing?
Well, as I'm myself pretty new to it I'm in a peculiar situation here. I can't give advice like a weathered veteran would be able to. But then, I probably have the problems I ran into as a newcomer fresh in mind. My advice would be to get into racing without expecting too much of oneself. Get in for the fun, not for the placement or ISK. If one keeps racing and recognizes that the troubles are with oneself, one will have a lot of fun and eventually success.

Any last thoughts?
Remember, there are no speed limits on the road to excellence.

[9/12] Khanid Race Results
Twelve brave pilots emerged from CONCORD's docking port of Agil last Sunday, to participate in the ninth race of the season. Starting in the Khanid Kingdom, the racers were required to make a wide cut through the center of Khanid's low security region and eventually emerge from neighboring Kor-Azor.

The key factor that influenced the outcome of the event was the split at waypoint ten in the Keyring system, where due to a malfunction the pilots were forced to utilize only one route of the split. The Blood Raiders also made a cameo appearance at this point, neutralizing rookie pilot and newly founded Team Halfcat captain Tariel Nyss in her Vigil. Despite this setback, she hopped into a nearby Rifter and finished the event, only to be later disqualified due to several missed waypoints.

Two other rookies made their debut to the races: Venture Racing Team's Esna Pitoojee and Lyn Farel of Scuderia Caille. Mr. Pitoojee fared much better Farel overall, scoring second place finish behind Scuderia's veteran, demon flir. Venture Racing Team has been dormant in the frigate category since the abrupt departure of Neonfolf, who's entourage of rookies have all endeavored to end flir's perfect streak.

Ms. Farel took her Vengeance to the Assault Frigate class, but due to hardware complications early in the race was largely absent and did not finish. Misan Pal'taek made a second straight first-place finish in the assault frigates, nearly two minutes ahead of her competition.

DRT's Rawr Cristina and team captain Darina Rea dominated the interceptor class, allowing Cristina to secure a significant lead over Venture's Takashi Kurosawa. With yet another absence from Dragonstar's Searaph, due to technical issues, has all but assured that the remainder of this season will be decided between Venture and Dirtside.

[10/12] Everyshore Race Results
Nine pilots turned out for the tenth race of the season in the Everyshore region of the Gallente Federation. A relatively short track with a rubber band effect stretching the racers out into Sinq Laison as far as Esmes, only to return back to finish in Colcer. Serpentis pirates were plentiful in the belts throughout the event, but no casualties were reported.

The Track
START: Uphene VI - Moon 16 - Egonics Inc. Development Studio
1 Alachene - Star
2 Elarel X - Asteroid Belt 5
3 Adeel IX - Planetary Customs Offices
4 Mannar VII - Ice Field 2
5 Mannar VII - Ice Field 2

9 Esmes IV - Asteroid Belt 1
10 Esmes IV - Asteroid Belt 1
11 Allipes - Star
12 Lermireve - Planet V
13 Mormelot - Mannar Stargate
14 Groothese XI - Asteroid Belt 3
15 Groothese XI - Asteroid Belt 3
END: Colcer IX - Moon 9 - Combined Harvest Plantation

*denotes the number of decoy containers located at this waypoint.
Individual waypoint times can be found here.
A map of the track can be found here.

Interceptors:
1 Rawr Cristina [DRT] - Raptor (0:38:00)
2 Takashi Kurosawa [VRT] - Malediction (0:38:03)
3 Darina Rea [DRT] - Malediction (0:38:44)
4 Searaph [DRS] - Malediction (0:39:30)
5 Graelyn [VRT]♠ - Malediction (0:39:33)

The interceptor class was brimming with close calls Sunday, with DRT's Rawr Cristina finishing a hair ahead of her long time rival from Venture Racing Team, Takashi Kurosawa to secure first place. Controversy struck as Searaph and Graeyln finished; despite the good Cardinal landing at the finishing line first, he was some distance from docking range while Dragonstar's Searaph landed perfectly for fourth place. In response to suggestion that possible foul play was involved, the NE-RA contacted management at the Combined Harvest Plantation facility in Colcer to investigate. The traffic controllers have suggested a possible navigation computational failure on the part of the Cardinal's vessel, and have denied any intentional wrongdoing in this matter.

Another matter in question was DRT's team leader Darina Rea, who managed to keep up with her wingmate Rawr Cristina and team rival Takashi Kurosawa, that is until Gate Traffic Control Operators delayed processing her jump for a considerable period of time. The NE-RA wishes to ensure its audience and the public that we operate a clean and legitimate organization, and investigate any unusual activity for evidence of external influence.

Frigates:
1 demon flir [SC] - Firetail (0:40:18)
2 Altantsetseg Naranbaatar♠ - Vigil (0:59:51)

Demon flir once again continued to dominate the Frigate class with little difficulty, and only faced opposition from first-time racer Altantsetseg Naranbaatar. Mr. flir has all but secured first place victory for himself and Scuderia Caille in this class.

Assault Frigates:
1 Nicoletta Mithra [SC]♠ - Retribution (0:42:38)
2 Norrin Ellis [VRT] - Ishkur (0:46:47)

denotes the racer as a rookie.

With the absence of Saikoyu on Sunday, Nicoletta Mithra inched closer to securing first place in the individual pro category, standing at currently only seven points behind. It was with some surprise when it was revealed that Norrin Ellis, manager for Venture Racing Team, was racing for the first time in this category. With Scuderia nipping at the heels of Venture's lead in the team scoring, Norrin's finish ensured that his team maintains a twenty-eight point lead rather than half that, and with such short time left in the season every point could make the difference.
