I've managed to fully train into my racial cruiser over the weekend and began again on the SoE mission arc. I finally managed to solo the 'Burning the Hive Down' with my Caracal and so I've moved on to the next few missions in the arc. I'm at the point now where I'm fighting the smugglers, who apparently are worth a lot of ISK in bounties, but find myself struggling to solo them. Before you ask, yes I have indeed tried finding people to fleet with to no avail.

So, my Caracal has drones (T1 Hobgoblins) and I'm curious how effective they are taking out ships without me being in the area. My strategy question is this:

Can I fly into a mission zone, drop the drones off and set them to attack and then warp away, give it a few minutes and then pop back? Will the drones be able to take out a ship or two or will they die to quickly?

Also, off-topic, can you carry extra drones in your cargo bay and insert them into your drone bay when you aren't docked in a station? If you could, I would think you'd be able to deploy more than the 2 drones I can currently fit in my drone bay, thus increasing your chances of completing the mission and killing all the smugglers.

AFAIK, the drones will continue to attack, but they'll be "abandoned". Truth is, they will die too quickly to do any real damage. Plus, your Caracal only carries 2, which will take some time to kill even a basic frigate rat.

How long would it take you to test your (rather silly) idea compared to write a forum post and wait for a reasonable answer?

If its pirates with big bounties your two small drones won't get past their shield recharge rate and thus fail to blow them up.

Also if you're not within the area you don't get the bounties which makes the whole thing pointless.

They will - maybe - continue to attack their current target, but they will not switch to another one without you being around.

You can not put drones from your cargo bay to your drone bay being in space unless you are next to a carrier or ship maintenance array (which allow refitting of your ship in space).

You can only deploy and use as much drones as your drone bandwith allows.

the gallente vexor is what you want if you are going to be a drone boat player. Just fly fast at a long range to kite their damage or be completely out of their range and then SET LOOSE THE DOGS OF WAR!

A little more to it than that, but that is the short of it.

That answers my questions, thanks. As far as 'why write on a forum versus try it out on our own'? I'm at work right now and was thinking about this tactic -- I won't be able to log on a try it for another 8-10 hours -- so a forum is a resource I utilize during the day.

Don't worry about that. Asking such questions on the forums is perfectly acceptable.

Seconded. Ignore the trolls, this is the forum for asking questions.

But i think Traejun is incorrect.
From what I've seen from PVP and having a poor internet connections, most drones freeze and stop once you go off grid.

But Traejun is correct about their fragility, even if they were to go into a fury, most drones won't last long under fire.
Think of drones as a gun that can you accidentally leave behind.

In fact most of the time drones are used to whack frigates that would be too small for ship mounted weapons to hit effectively.

Have you checked out the mission before hand, and are you sure you are using the correct damage type?

If you want to figure it out yourself, load all 4 damage missiles into your cargo, fire a few volleys and watch the log (accessories -> combat log) for damage notifications. Then try another missile type. One of them will be a clear winner in damage. Use that one.

Re:Abandoned Drones
My experience has been that when I get back one of the drones is dead but the others still seem to be around with the NPC ignoring them. Maybe it's a brotherhood of computer-controlled entities that has them back off after the first kill. Can't say I've researched it at all.

PS: Anyone know the largest ship-type allowed in the SoE mission arc? I'm way past that stage in my development, but never did it so was thinking of going back and playing around with it.

You can't move drones from cargo to your dronebay in space, unless, as previously stated, you are in a station or next to a carrier or maintenance array or whatever. I think. Anyway; it makes sense that you should be able to do it; I mean, it's space. But from what I've heard, CCP made it this way for balancing issues.

Consider it: say a cruiser has a 25m3 drone bay and the same for bandwidth. If they lose their drones or they get destroyed, if their cargo could hold say 150m3, that's another 6 full waves of drones. All hypothetical ship stats but there it is.

Above posters are right, vexor is a fantastic drone boat, and the gallente have good drone boats at all ship sizes.

Not to go off topic but what do you guys think about an ishkur running these missions? Would it be doable?

EDIT: wall of text format made my eyes bleed. Embarassed
