Hello pilots.

I've been on extended hiatus from Eve online for going on 2 years now. Well, the GF that pretty much nagged me to death to quit playing is out of the picture now, and I was just wondering, from a player's perspective, what some of the major changes to the game have been over the last 48 months.

Thanks a bunch, and good flying.

Well, one of the major changes was that years now have 12 months instead of 24, so that's something... :P

lol i didn't catch that reading through the first time.

Lets see. No more learning skills, incursions(new pve), incarna is testing, T3(dont know if that is new for you, cant remember when apoc was released). tba there is more but patch notes would explain it better.

Nothing much, Eve developers are still drunks but their illness has progressed a bit.

well pvp took a nosedive - roaming is rare and few people see the need to fight, sov is borked still and encourages turtle, FW is still broken but has probably the best pvp bang for buck out there right now and a vast majority of the population still live in empire 'safe-space' as they refer it it, and many good old timers who want to fight are playing WOT or grinding for their mom or titan or whatever. . .

but we got a lot of good fluff which will keep you interested for a month.

Nah the last batch of complaints all quit 2 years ago when CCP gave up on Eve.

This new batch is the last remanant of players who aren't solely focused on eye-candy.

Soon they will leave and CCP will be free to make a dumbed down mainstream product for idiots.

I'm assuming you left just before Dominion came, so I'll try to list the bigger changes that came with it and the following expansions.

Dominion was basicly a sovereignty mechanic rewrite, capital ship rebalance and gave the players the ability to upgrade their systems. Basicly it's just a new system with new problems that once again need solving. If you are going to spend time on the forums, you'll hear all about it. The best things from my personal perspective were the fleedfinder feature, new in-game browser and faction ship rebalance. They also added pirate mission arcs in 0.0 and loads of little things like audio warnings. Game started to lag like hell at that point.

Tyrannis gave us the ability to put installations onthe surphase of planets. It was one of the worst expansions ever to hit EVE. I played better management games over 20 years ago and the playability was initially a horrible piece of ****. Basicly all features that CCP talked about were never delivered and it is still a very meh basic minigame, but the playability issues were fixed in following patches, so it's not bad for what it is and CCP has plans to develop it further. It made the lag even worse and there was a loot nerf to buff industrialist. I can't remember anything good in the feature department that came with tyrannis.

After tyrannis CCP started to really work on the lag with a dedicated team and they have produced some really good results. Those results aren't just seen in large fleet fights, but many systems you use on a regular basis just seem to work a little snappier. New improvements have been introduced on a pretty constant basis after that.

Incursion has been a great expansion. New harder content for PvE players, that they seem to like. Removal of learning skills, T2 ammo buff, new salvaging ship, new(missing) DED complexes are being added, new portraits/character creator, CONCORD LP store and a HUGE amount of little fixes and tweaks to make the gameplay experience a little nicer(PI fixes were part of this). From my perspective it has been the best expansion in a long time.

Summer expansion will be the first iteration of walking is stations and the bitterness and the excitement about the change is clearly visible on the forums. Laughing We'll have to see what it actually gives to us in the gameplay department, since it seems to be just a technology testing and creating immersion at this point with little to no gameplay.

Did you go to the fan fest to let the devs know of your concerns, or do you just come on here in the hope you'd get some cheese?

Derp! Thanks for the links Wink

So, in general, it sounds like not much has changed expect to replace one bad sov mechanic with another, tweak a whole bunch of little things, rebalance some stuff (I do like most of the faction ship changes though), a couple new ships (nothing groundbreaking) and a new character portrait system (mine looks awful, should have practiced first).

Thanks for the info folks.

Yeah, right as I quit for reals (though I hadn't been doing much except for skill training for months before then). Like I was saying, the GF at the time really REALLY didn't like me playing Eve.

It might have had something to do with the occasion once when, right after we finished sharing some intimate time, I jumped up to change a skill because Aura let me know my skill training was completed.

Apocrypha introduced an entirely new set of systems that connect together differently and provide an entirely different kind of environment for players (no local, everything must be scanned/probed, randomly arranged connecting gates, entirely new ship class with increased customization, entirely new industry/invention/gathering chains).

Tyrannis completely removed NPC-seeded commodities (cattle, etc) from the game and replaced it with an entirely new set of mechanics... which it then realized were boring and altered significantly (to something that's still boring).

The portrait thing isn't actually an expansion, it's a precursor to their next expansion, which will open up an entirely new set of spaces again (the inside of stations).

Admittedly there are plenty of people who never tire of the same old basically-static content out in sovereignty 0.0 and only notice the tweaks that impact that, but there have been substantial additions to the game since you left. The only addition that was really "nothing new" is the last one (incursion), which basically took some of the AI and randomness aspect of w-space and injected it into k-space.
