Why is it people buy Apple products?

They are overpriced in comparison to other things that have better specs and these other things dont all look EXACTLY THE SAME.

Ipad vs Ipad 2...Fair bit of difference in CPU but for the price you can pick up an Ipad now compared to an Ipad 2 the speed wont even matter (who runs a bazzilion apps on something so mobile? idiots ofc), the god damn memory is not even expandable.

So for $399 STARTING price, you get a touchscreen laptop with 1/10th the storage. So we people really buy this for JUST the touchscreen and massive amount of apps?

Iphone lineup...most terribad thing ever.

They first released the original iphone, biggest pile of **** ever(granted it was one of the good smartphones out there but for 500...srsly). Never even had 3g, so they had an excuse to release another iphone (Iphone 3G). The same screen, memory, cpu..you name it. But starting price was the same as the first ever Iphone despite it had a different look and added 3G.

The difference between the 3G and 3GS is incredible....but around 2-3 month after the 3GS was out. Similar spec'd phones with better cameras and battery life where coming out, at a lower price. A great deal of HTC's phones where better at the same cost.

Between 3GS ad Iphone 4, significant difference in hardware specs (but having a signal is good right?) What annoys me about the Iphone 4 is the fact that around 2 month after release apple announced we would have an Iphone 5 by Q3 of 2011.

The prices, small difference in spec and v small release date between each phone aside....they are locked down to high hell and are a right fkin pain in the ass to properly root.

So after all my rambling, my main questions is....are apple products for people that walk into a shop and look around then ask "Well the best thing must be the most expensive, lets just buy that" and why choose them over Android based phones....besides the uber user friendly interface apple seem to like.

tl;dr apple expensive, for rich idiots, Android rules, Iphone 5 is a gay idea etc etc

Because when you buy a song on iTunes it is only compatible with other Apple products. Because once you get something from Apple you can't escape the loop without breaking a bunch of copyright/piracy laws.

My dad got me the iPhone a while ago, and I have easily put 200$ of apps/music into it.

By the time you realize how much better the Android is, you are already trapped.

They get people into their trap with good marketing.

so, for the last 15 or so years i've asked the same question. for a while my wife had a mac, and i just didn't get the allure. plus, i hated dealing with problems on it since everything was so foreign.

then... i recently got a new job that provides a mac laptop. and i have to deal a fairly complicated software (telephony server/browser) that runs on windows, linux and mac. after a few months of having to deal with each on a daily basis mac has become my favorite. it has all of the control/functionality (via terminal) that i prefer in linux, and it has a slick ui. making lots of typical things easier to deal with. and, despite the difference in hardware specs, mac IS faster in a lot of cases. and lastly it just doesn't have the constant stream of malware and virii that you experience on windows.

however, the next time i get a computer i would be hard pressed to get a mac. the difference in price is just too much and not everything i use is available on them.

edit: i should mention though, that i lot of what i do is via command line.... and DOS just sucks compared to mac/linux IMO (coming from someone who's been comfortable with DOS far longer than linux even...)

This has been incorrect for several years now. Purchases on the iTMS are standard, non-DRM'd AAC files. They will play on anything that can play AAC files.

Apple has the best UIs these days, PERIOD. A well-known exception is their stupidity with mouse buttons and terrible keyboard layouts.

Most of their products have decent haptics too, so they are pleasant to use and look at. This has always been undervalued by shoddy plastic gadget companies (i.e. the competition).

Very simply put, Apple stuff is what you buy when you don't need to look at the price tag above everything else and/or when you don't need Windows (or, if you're a generally clueless artsy-farty type who "needs" Apple to fit in).

You said it yourself. The rest is pure marketing, Apple Users depicted as more cool then PC users and so on. When I met another Apple-Fanboi in RL I quietly pity him/her. Linkage

I pity someone trying to buy a 3G phone full stop, the market is flooded with junk and a multitude of designs and specifications. In addition to that there is very little in the way of standards in format and media.

If you want to criticise Apple for releasing 1 new phone every 12-18 months, then you really need to understand what the market is like.

Nokia have released over 70 3G phones, you gonna' attack them?
How about Sony Ericsson? Their total model range is over 90 since 2007!
And HTC? Well, they are more respectable with just 21, split between Windows 7 / and Android (maybe they should make up their minds)
And the good people at LG? Well, stand back in awe at 153 variations of mobile phone since 1996 - that's an average of 10 models per year!

Y'see, its not about whether someone is a fanboi (although I am sure they do exist, like trackball fanbois) it's about what you want.

The whole interface is simply better. Although I am confident other phones will catch up in time, they have a very long road ahead of them.

The price may seem high when you compare it to the competition, but to use a food analogy - you are comparing the plushness of the Ritz, with the prices of McDonalds. Now, McDonalds might be 'food' and it is certainly a cheap alternative to eating out - but when I want to eat out, I'll go to the Ritz.

Reason?

At the Ritz they don't give me pictures of what is available, only to have something slap-dashed together and thrown at me. They have a head chef who selects the best ingredients and is talented enough to lead a Michelin star team all the way through the food creation process. It then gets viewed by the restaurant manager for it's suitability prior to being delivered to my table, and is then delivered in a prompt, but graceful manner.

Does that cost more? Yes.

Is it worth it? That's your opinion.

If you see food as something that is a very simple and necessary part of existing, and therefore so long as some form of subsistence is being consumed, then you are okay - go to MacDonalds, or just keep eating bread at home.

If you see food as being something which should be enjoyed, whilst having meaningful conversations with your friends - then pull up a chair and I'll get the waiter to fetch you a tie and jacket, because in here we have standards.

Personally I bought a MBP because I was sick of the cheap, flexing plastic laptop cases. Comparable laptops like the HP Envy have a similar price. Included in the deal was an iPod touch for 36 euros, which was too good to pass up. That was two years ago. Since then I spent less than 10 bucks on iTunes/Apps. I had a hardware failure on the MBP and I must say the support is just as bad as most other computer vendors (except they try hard to be hip). In general the whole Apple experience was underwhelming. By now I can't stand the marketing anymore, every bit of it treats you like a gullible idiot with too much cash.

Wouldn't buy again.

PS.: Pricing on the iPhones is way off IMO, they should cost half of what they do now.
PPS.: I got an iPad from work because we have an app we sell that we need to support. The only use I have for it is reading mails while not at the desk and killing time.

kinda true, well just if they want it on their Iphone or whatever, but a lot of people do buy tracks to support the bands they like. After all we wouldn't want bands we like to be completely screwed would we?

I personally have an Iphone 4 and have done since august,I must say I don't think much will touch it for a while in terms of UI, apple does seems to be getting it's ass in gear with little features being upgraded all the time as well. While I was looking for a new phone all the other touch screens at the time were either laggy or were just terrible (I don't like dragging and it reacting slowly). Can't say its not a kind of status symbol though, it is a cool kids bit of tech if were honest.

iPad 2 for me is what the iPad 1 should of been, I never bought the 1st one, too heavy, underpowered, and not an awesome design. Now these are sorted, and the massively improved graphics power makes the iPad 2 the best tablet on the market by far. In terms of Apple in general, you say how expensive they are, if you look at the IPad, it's actually the cheapest on the market, with other manufactures struggling to keep their products inline with Apples offering, at the same prices. This will change as OEM's catch up on refining their manufacturing, but look at the industry, Acer, LG, and Nokia CEO's all recently stepped down mostly due to pressure from Apple in the Smartphone and Tablet sectors. Acer, who pioneered the Netbook has seen contractions for two consecutive quarters, and had to revise their growth projections. Regardless of your view, Apple is selling lots of units, and are making it very difficult for some of the industries biggest players.

In relation to Apple Computers, it's very much about what you do. I use Apple for the workflow options OS X has, and only up until 1 or 2 years ago, Adobe products were slightly more refined on this platform. This is now however, not the case, best example of this was Windows receiving 64bit support in Photoshop a whole production cycle before they recoded for Cocoa. Workflow and userbility looks to be improving further in the upcoming 10.7 which is going to be really awesome.

The cost of hardware specifically has improved a lot, the cost for add-on options as come down a lot. RAM used to be insane, and totally out of line with what you could pick up direct from Kensington or Micron, why it was like that, I have no idea. But, then, you just added these things after buying the product and saved yourself 100's. Aside from that, the build quality (unibody case) and in most cases the battery life on the MacBook Pro's are unchallenged by other OEM's.

Overall costs to pick up Apple products has come down a lot over the last few years, but yes, for their higher spec machines they are expensive and don't really fall inline with hardware from other OEM's, why this is the case, I just don't have answers for you. Apple products have pros and cons just the same as Windows / Andriod based offerings have. You have to pick the best products for the task you want to do.

Apple recently has created a new trend in high tech consumerism. Not about releasing new technology.. just because it is new technology but presenting established technology concepts in packaging to trendy consumers (Who don't have geek level understanding of computer technology history) that is flattering and appealing.

Apple's ring fencing is annoying - get consumers inside Apples product biosphere and they stay there buying more Apple services and products. But on a business level it works and I am sure Sony are jealous as they failed trying the same thing to an extent.

What is rank arrogance is Apple banning Adobe Flash on its Ipads. As far as monopolistic software companies go Adobe is very benign. Apple has some balls doing this. I use youtube a lot and would not go anywhere near any product that did not support flash.

User experience. Apple products have been designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Furthermore, because Apple controls both the hardware and the software, they are renowned for their stability. Of course this same strict control also takes freedom away from the user.

Also, the Mac OS combines the ease of use of Windows with the power of the *nix console. Think of it as *nix lite.

People like to be pampered. Owning an Apple product gives them the illusion.

Its called marketing, selling you stuff that is overpriced and with apple relatively no tech support other then saying, buy a new one.

Thats why companies sometimes create same product under 2 brands, one on proper price, and other over priced.

Its human psychology... say something long enough and it enters brainwashing :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx7v815bYUw

People buy Apple products invent all kinds of moronic reasoning like "the UI is better", "it just works", "for the build quality" or for the completely absurd reason "I am a artist that need it for my art".

But really, who in their right state of mind would pay hundreds of dollars for a "better UI"? Keep in mind the number of iterations on the ip*d and iphones and you realize just how tragic this mentality gets.

For the build quality I have only this to say, Apple suffer hardware failures like everyone else, sometimes more so than others.

And if you meet one of those self-proclaimed artists, just euthanize the little ****er, he or she won't be missed.

So, people who buy Apple products are a sad bunch of clowns with downs and that concludes the today's lesson.

Good grief. That's either a particularly strange attempt at historical revisionism or demonstrates that the writer has essentially no knowledge of "computer technology history".

As things are now, I'll probably never buy an Apple product but I wouldn't hold the lack of Flash against them.
I've seen some nice things done in Flash but I'd rather have it gone from the Web. It's mostly used on ads or by crappy developers that need to do everything in Flash when HTML4/JS would be enough.

Hmm, let me test your psychology here...

If I gave you an iPhone free of charge, would you:

1) Destroy it
2) Use it, begrudgingly
3) Use it, because it was free
4) Not use it as a phone, but one of it's other functions instead (games, music, youtube, general applications, handheld video/camera recorder, web/forum, messaging/MSN, and internet tethering device)
5) Use it purely as a phone, and use one of your existing devices for number (4).
6) Use it completely for all of its functions, including telephone/video phone capabilities.
7) Use it for something else not listed - like a paperweight.
8) Give it to someone who means a lot to you.

And no, you cannot sell it, that is against the rules of me buying you one and no you cannot create your own answer.

Pick.

lol, silly silly apple fans
thats like saying .. ow does our product stop working properly when you are holding it ? .. well .. no replacement offered .. BUT you can always buy this 19.99 $ case to bypass the problem.

Like saying .. Ow yeh, we still dont support this ... BUT we partially did a bit of afford to provide you with the ability to do a fraction of what you could possibly accomplish.

Marketing and appealing to people is a great tool .. like publishing as few products as possible .. making a loyal customer base and then charging for all extras.
Once you done this, you can push a product that is no where near close to the what current technology can accomplish .. and then only offering upgraded version once in a while so that the consumers will drop the old products to buy the new one.

While a company like Samsung, makes many products with the latest technologies at hand, this gives the consumer the ability to pick and chose which product suits best .. and you wouldnt expect to replace it as soon as a newer product comes.
Thats only something apple fans would do :P. Thats why its best for apples interests if they dont push many products at once.

Many artists use them as certain fields, such as layout for offset printing, is a Mac heavy industry. The movie industry was mostly on SGI's up until maybe 8-10 years ago. I remember a few years before uni, Framestore, the company CCP is paying to do the new nebulas was running SGI's, then they switched to PC workstations, as PC's had become price/power ratio a better investment. Matte painting and concept seems to be split, maybe slightly more geared towards PC's. Graphics design studios, Publishing (Newspapers / Magazines) and Video Editing are mostly Macs. The industry you work in influences what you use. You need to understand that for years Adobe products were plain better on Apple Computers, and Apple has a LONG history in graphics and layout. Now you see this changing, PC getting better with Adobe packages, 64 bit support before OSX, for example.

I was using PC's till I started working in newspaper design / layout. The whole company outside of accounts, ran on Macs. I loved the workflow of OS X and just moved over to Mac for my own work. There is much less of a reason for artists to buy a Mac over a PC these days in terms of pure performance. And I never personally understand why so many Graphics Designers use iMacs, the glossy screen makes colour matching a *****! The other thing you want to remember is, if your investing in serious kit for post production, or wide gamut monitors your spending mega bucks regardless of your chosen platform (PC or Mac), you can easy drop over 2000 on a monitor alone. Professionals for the most part that I've seen working in studios build up their platforms around what their eco-system and output is. Not because they look shiny, or Steve jobs came to them in a f-cking wet dream.
