Group drones. 20 fighters bombers are grouped into a single fighter bomber wing. This fighter bomber wing moves just like a single fighter bomber, with 20x damage and 20x hitpoints. The hitpoints would be a little complex since fighters would be destroyed as hitpoints go down and area effect weapons would still have to do damage to each figher, but I think it's workable.

A fight where 100 supercarriers are deployed would go from 2000 individual entities to 200. Thats gotta help something.

I expect those superfighterbombers to be way worse tbh. You would neet to make AoE weapons (smartbombs/bombs) deal the Weapon damage x the amount of grouped bombers while every targetet damage would be dealt as damage to a single drone. Then those SFB would still need to calculate the damage x2 (because since they work like a turret they can miss, land wreckings etc too, correct me if i'm wrong)

Dealing with FBs would become way more easier since you dont have to target them 1 by 1 by 1. You just target 1 and shoot till they are all down.

Grouping Drones like weapons if you want .. good idea.
Grouping Drones to a giant SFB .. awefull idea.

Actually back in the days we had such a change to drones. Ships used to field 10 Drones max, carriers didnt exist.

So what if they could work out AOE weapon damage as OP said (doesn't seem that complicated really) and you lose your lock after destroying 1 drone in the wing. Doesn't seem that terrible.

There are a few kinks to work out, the main one being the inability to target three or four drones at once and attack them simultaneously, or pop them in sequence without having to require lock (call it the paralell lock problem)

The maths for damage would be fairly simple. Long possibly, but trivial. I like it.
