I keep hearing people raving about the use of sentries.

I know you can easily scoop them up - but only if you are beside them. In order to do this you have to basically park up beside them.

IS that what people do or am I missing something?

You do exactly that park your domi, drop sentries and start shooting; start with frigs so you can conveniently one volley those before they get too close.

In deed, i drop em, orbit one of them with the gila/ishtar for some added speedtanking and pew pew away. If they get aggro im close enough to just grab em all up again.

For PvE, yes. Ishtar with sentry drones is very popular vs Guristas. In complexes drop the sentry drones, and then orbit one of them to get your transversal up and reduce incoming damage.

In PvP they are useful when shooting online POS, which normal drones can't hit. I also like them in a PvP BS because they are instant damage and don't have to travel to the target (take a flight of warriors and add sentries to capacity). But you may be moving around the battlefield yourself, so prepare to loose them (especially in low sec). Just treat them like ammo or cap boosters.
