Hi, I'm an A Level English student doing my coursework. It's about language in online games, I need data for this coursework. I will be very grateful if you fill out this survey for me.

If you don't feel comfortable answering a question then don't answer it :), the most important questions are 11-15.

so here goes.

1. What is your gender?
2. How old are you?
3. What country are you from?
4. Is English your first language?
5. How long have you played EVE?
6. How often do you play EVE?
7. Do you prefer PVP or PVE?
8. What is your in game profession(s)?
9. Do you prefer big corps, small corps or npc corps?
10. Do you use Ventrilo/Teamspeak while playing?
11. What EVE specific terms can you think of (rat, plex, etc)?
12. What general MMO terms can you think of (grind, nerf, mob, etc)?
13. Which of these do you use in in-game chat?
14. Which of these do you use in Vent/Teamspeak?
15. Why do you use them?

yes

10hr/week'ish (probably half that uninterrupted)
pvp
not sure what professions you mean. some suicide ganking. some ransoming alliances/towers. mostly being a spacejerk.
small corps (10~50)

11. What EVE specific terms can you think of (rat, plex, etc)?
covops, rat, alpha, dps, cpu/dcu/cfc/ccc (etc), fw, ewar, td, tp, eccm, ecm, hac, lar/sar/mar/sb, nrds, nbsi, nos/neut, rep, pos, tank, logi, sc .. to name a couple.

12. What general MMO terms can you think of (grind, nerf, mob, etc)?
aggro, hp/mp/sp, alt, aoe, buff, camp, class, wtt/wts/wtb
13. Which of these do you use in in-game chat?
all of them
14. Which of these do you use in Vent/Teamspeak?
almost none of the typical ones, just the easier ones e.g "dps" instead of damage per second, alt instead of "this is my alternate character" but since not everyone knows "tp" means target painter i try to use full terminology
15. Why do you use them?
more efficient in game, i rarely waste time typing/talking. prefer vent comms

1. What is your gender?
M.

2. How old are you?
33 going on 34.

3. What country are you from?
Romania.

4. Is English your first language?
Obviously no.

5. How long have you played EVE?
~5 years.

6. How often do you play EVE?
Hard to say, depends what you mean by "play", and when. I'm almost always around, but very seldom logged in lately.

7. Do you prefer PVP or PVE?
Mostly PvP, but PvE too... however, not the ship-to-ship kind (and also PvD, where D stands for "dev").

8. What is your in game profession(s)?
Nowadays, almost exclusively market speculator.

9. Do you prefer big corps, small corps or npc corps?
My own small corp.

10. Do you use Ventrilo/Teamspeak while playing?
Almost never.

11. What EVE specific terms can you think of (rat, plex, etc)?
A big portion of these.

12. What general MMO terms can you think of (grind, nerf, mob, etc)?
Too many to mention.

13. Which of these do you use in in-game chat?
Just about any, whenever it would come up in conversation. If needed, I can explain the term to newcomers that don't understand it yet.

14. Which of these do you use in Vent/Teamspeak?
No idea. I hate voice chats. Text mode FTW.

15. Why do you use them?
Why not ? It's shorter than using a series of words to describe what a single relatively short word easily could, a word that most people I talk to can most likely properly comprehend.

7. I prefer interacting with other players over both pvp and pve, but if I had to pick it'd be pvp.

13. All of the eve related ones.
14. All of the eve related ones.
15. Because they're the proper term to use.

1. male
2. 27
3. USA
4. yes
5. about 6 months
6. about 20-60 hours per week, varying by how tired I am of it
7. I prefer doing anything I didn't do last week.
8. mining, missioning, collecting junk, ECM warfare, and being a general know-it-all
9. big corps - I can never find one that's big enough that people are actually on half the time
10. yes, teamspeak
11. other than rat and PLEx? CONCORDed; suicide gank; lowsec, highsec, nullsec; Goonswarm Federation (Goons); logi; cyno (both verb and noun); drone
12. tank/tanking; buff hybrids, nerf drakes; NPC
13. all of them and more
14. " "
15. They are convenient terms that don't have effective counterparts in language outside of the game, so it's a lot easier to say the shortcut word than actually describe what you're talking about every time. For example: "Hey Frank, would you please command your small robotic spacecraft to fly over to my ship and begin regenerating it's shields? My fortification of resistances and hit points is growing alarmingly low, and I heard that there are members of the Goonswarm Federation preparing to light a cynosural field nearby, with which they will provide transport for their fleet to this system." is much longer than it has to be: "Hey Frank, get your logi drones on me, my tank is failing and I heard the Goons are gonna pop a cyno and cyno in a fleet."

Or

"My word, I do believe that this guy did just disregard CONCORD's warnings and open fire on my ship in high-security space! He successfully demolished it with his superior but cheap firepower from a cheaply fit and insured ship, despite the knowledge that he would most certainly lose said ship!"

is equivalent to

"I just got suicide ganked!"

3. What country are you from?
Sweden
4. Is English your first language?
No, but we started to learn english in the 4th grade.

5. How long have you played EVE?
5 years

6. How often do you play EVE?
I log in almost everyday, but I don't PLAY everyday.

7. Do you prefer PVP or PVE?
It depends on what kind of PVP I'm doing. POS-bashing is boring, but low sec roams are awesome.

8. What is your in game profession(s)?
Mostly mission runner atm. "Looking for corp"

9. Do you prefer big corps, small corps or npc corps?
Big or small, doesn't matter to me, but I rather create a corp for myself than join a NPC corp.

10. Do you use Ventrilo/Teamspeak while playing?
If I'm going to PVP; yes.

11. What EVE specific terms can you think of (rat, plex, etc)?
rat, plex, nbsi, nrds, POS, concordokken, kyno (cyno, but kyno is more fun). I could go on for ever tbh, but I usually tend to use as much abbreviations as possible.

12. What general MMO terms can you think of (grind, nerf, mob, etc)?
Imba, noob, newbie, leet, tank, gank, dps, guild, farm, troll

13. Which of these do you use in in-game chat?
EVE terms and or the general MMO terms? Let's say both.
EVE-terms: I use most of them, almost everyone understands the abbreviations and if they don't I'll explain that they mean.
Genral MMO: noob, tank, gank, dps, troll

14. Which of these do you use in Vent/Teamspeak?
All of them I guess.

15. Why do you use them?
People in the game understands the words, and it's much easier to type "My BS does 1000 dps" instead of "My battle ship does 1000 damage per second". Even though EVE is in general a slow game with all it's training and all the warping around, we can't fiddle around typing long sentences.

The simple reason: folks understand them, and it's easier to say, "John has a point, Amy and Phil bump target off the gate!" than "John has activated his warp scrambler on the target. Amy and Phil can you please collide your MWDing ships with the target in order to prevent it from using the star gate?"

8. mission-runner / ratter / pirate / grieffer / ninja-salvager / explorer / producer / researcher / trader / currently going to be a WH-farmer (not only this character, i've included my alts jobs)
9. small corps.
10. depend who's with me.

12. same hear...
13. all of them.
14. all of them.

15b. "Do you use these IRL?" Yes. Most of the people i know are fond of games, so everybody understands, and it does allow us to explain a lot of things quicker. Sometimes it's even hard to go back to an almost "usual" language, when you need to interact with non-players (i'm trying to stop calling them NPCs o_0).

SurveyMonkey is your friend.

That said:

1. What is your gender?
F
2. How old are you?
38
3. What country are you from?
US
4. Is English your first language?
Yes
5. How long have you played EVE?
2 years I think (I'd have to look at my char sheet to be sure, but this was my first char).
6. How often do you play EVE?
Used to be every day, lately I've been once or twice a week.
7. Do you prefer PVP or PVE?
I prefer PVE, but PVP has its appeal as well.
8. What is your in game profession(s)?
Gypsy. I rarely stay in one place and I do what I feel like doing at the moment.
9. Do you prefer big corps, small corps or npc corps?
I prefer smaller corps that feel more like a family.
10. Do you use Ventrilo/Teamspeak while playing?
To listen.
11. What EVE specific terms can you think of (rat, plex, etc)?
Rat, Plex, reds, blues, war target (or WT), highsec, lowsec, nullsec (or 00), gate camp, blob, kill mail, kill board, loss mail(why aren't they called loss boards?), Concorded (and it's variations)
12. What general MMO terms can you think of (grind, nerf, mob, etc)?
Noob (in all it's forms) grind, nerf, buff, mob, camp (in general), tea bag (which oddly, is something you cannot yet do in Eve - hooray Incarna), grief (& griefer), PVP, PVE,
13. Which of these do you use in in-game chat?
Just about all of them, except teabag probably, since it's not really applicable in Eve.
14. Which of these do you use in Vent/Teamspeak?
None of them - since I can't talk, using them in voice communications is a little hard. Smile In all seriousness though, I do hear most of them used frequently.
15. Why do you use them?
Because, as with all specialized jargon, they convey more meaning in less letters than using layspeak. It's the same at work - when I send an email to someone on my team, I am far more free to use technical language and abbreviations and expect them to understand me and my intent than if I tried to do so with someone from our business line. when used with the correct audience, jargon allows for faster communication. Consider "kb" versus "the website we post all our victories on" I managed to convey in two letters the same information that took far more, but only people familiar with the jargon will understand what that abbreviation means.

15. Why do you use them?

They are short, concise and contain a lot of information, thus making them very useful to describe situations very quickly. They are also known by other players, so they become a kind of nexus within a gaming community.

15. Why do you use them?
All those codes help players to explain some situations with a few words whereas you should do big phrases, living languages and each of those I speak/write are constantly changing it's really interesting to see how people adapt their own language to every new situation. I don't like the academic style, it's the best way to make them look like dead languages just like Latin.
