So currently I'm at about the same place ship wise with Amarr and Mini ships. Both BS levels with close to the same skills. What I would like to know however is, should I go for a Varg or a Paladin?

I'm not so hot about lasers only having two damage types, but I might be missing something.

So, in your oppinion, preferably with reasons, which should I go for if I intend to do lvl 4 hi sec missioning for a while? (A care bear needs money before he can risk his claws in PvP. ^^)

Vargur with a gist C-type large shield booster and boost amp will see you through all lvl 4 missions and is a rather cheap faction fit that wont get you ganked. being able to deal all damage types is a huge bonus over the Paladin.

Both of these ships when properly skilled/fit will murder lvl 4's, but as already mentioned with Vargur you get the flexibility of being able to do all types of damage.

I haven't found the paladin's limited damage types too limiting. Most peoples' assumptions on damage types versus NPCs rarely seem accurate to me. For example, the paladin will sometimes 1-shot (or nearly so) those Angel cruisers that seem to be so resilient to every other damage type I've put against them. I have not flown a vargur myself, but the Paladin, with it's long range high DPS has been more than worth the less flexible DPS types.

Its pretty easy actually. If you fly in Amarr space, nothing beats the Paladin for Sansha and Blood Raiders (no, the Nightmare doesnt). In Angel space, Vargur is best, because those ships are the strongest in their supposed-to-be areas. In Gurista space I found the Vargur not so hot because they tend to remain on 40+ km ranges and you have to shoot either Phased Plasma at them (which does primarily therm dmg and has -50% range multiplier) and this is only the secondary weakness of Guristas, or you need kinetic ammo which doesnt do as much dmg. The Paladin might be better there with Tachyons and INMF ammo.

For Serpentis, they do equally well in my opinion. So it basically comes down to the area you fly your missions in.

Vargur seems a better idea because ALL of the bonus will be used, no matter what. Compared to the Pala where you have to fit a webber to use everything. You can fit for damage and tank on the Varg and have versatility in damage types.

But the shield booster will be expensive, eventually youŽll have to fork over more than you paid for the ship again to get one of the nice gist boosters.

Even with all the tracking you wonŽt be able to hit close orbiting web/scramble frigs, the Paladin webber is probably superior. Vargur has a real problem here (or at least I do) when some missions immediately start killing the drones that are supposed to get rid of the elite-frigs.

In PvP Minmatar is FotM and hopefully for quite a while, as weŽve been in the doghouse for some years. But who knows what CCP will cook up next.

Most everything is weak to thermal anyway, so Phased Plasma rounds would work well for me in any mission, anywhere.
