Hey all,
So, who's looked at a hurricane, or a rokh, or another BC/BS and wondered why the guns are so damn small. You're flying such a large ship, and you have tiny peashooters lined up along one side that shoot a 180 degree hemisphere.

This has been suggested before in some way or another. But, what if each ship was given a new weapon slot or two, for a specific weapon. (I'm not suggesting removing or changing current weapons, only addition of a new set) Instead of a turret hardpoint, it could be called a Cannon hardpoint. Depending on the weapon, it can be either forward firing, or broadside firing. The broadside weapons can be an array of cannons lined up against the side of the ship, the forward firing battery a single large cannon.
Now, for BS/BC's and the like, make it so the side mounted cannons do more damage. But obviously it would be more of a pain to get that slow turned to bring them to bear, and easier to simply face the enemy for the forward firing one. For Frigs, the forward firing cannon will do more damage, the side mounted less. Easier to orbit your enemy, but more damage for firing on the approach.
Lets be honest, who hasn't thought about how cool it would be if their BS didn't have a single large cannon? Some of these ships are begging for something like it. Again, the Hurricane, or any other number of large, long ships. Heck, just look at the rifter and tell me it shouldn't have some sort of forward only firing weapon on it?

This is an idea that's brought up about once a year or more. Only one of them have been linked by the Commonly Proposed Ideas thread unfortunately.

Please continue to speculate though. Maybe one of these will click with the developeers some day.
The problem with fixed spinal weapons in the game are that it doesnt support weapons that cant rotare. It'd be nice if they did though! I certainly wouldnt mind taking a frigate on a strafing run using medium weapons.

It is my understanding that Eve is based or has some connection to the old Traveller RPG. In traveller many ships came equiped with a spinal mount weapon of great power. As the Op has suggested it was a weapon with a narrow firing arc and slow cycle rate but massive alpha.

My thought is that there must be a technical difficulty in putting that in Eve or else it never would have been dropped in the first place.

Have to say though it would be interesting to not just have everything firing in 360*.

To eve, your ship is not ship-shape. It's a big circle, just like everything else. Your ship's facing is almost entirely a client-side display-only function.

(Yes, they COULD re-write the physics engine to incorporate LOS and facing... but doing would throw out all of their speed improvements of late and make big fleet battles computationally even worse.)

LoS and ship/gun orientation was about the only thing I liked about PoTBS.
Its awesome though.
But it would be hell to use on a 3D battlefield. And I suspect it would be even harder to program and handle serverside. Especially considering the size of fleets.

This. There are no firing arcs, and introducing them would lead to more server calcuations thus more lag/less players supported. Would be nice tho, add a significant element to combat such as flanking moves etc.

I see you're point. Ahh well, it would have been cool =]

On the other hand though, I still wish the guns were a bit larger. The small weapons on a frig looks huge, but large weapons look like peashooters, compared to the ship its on. I've noticed that things aren't exactly to scale, and that is entirely client side. I can understand the idea of gravity manipulation allowing GSC's to hold 900 m3 more on the inside than the whole thing takes up, but seriously, some of the ship / station designs should be redone and rescaled.
