An 8.9 quake would make it the 8th heaviest quake ever recorded.

BBC news mentioned they have a problem with a Nuclear reactors cooling system and that four others have been shut down, there is a huge fire burning at an oil refinery to.

actually 5th, because of the 3 top ones, the first is a starquake, the second is the theoretical magnitude of the Yucatán impact and the third is magnitude 10, never recorded by mankind.

that means, the 4th strongest earthquake registered is the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 (mag. 9), 3rd is the 1964 Anchorage quake with 9.3, second is the 9.4 quake that caused the 2004 tsunami, and the first is the 1960 Valdivia quake that hit the 9.5.

This is going to be bad, it's not over yet and all the news hasn't come in yet. There are a lot of pacific islands and the west of coast of North America that are still going to get hit by the tsunami.

There is a video floating around of a guy in a car trying to outrun a flaming building. Wrap your head around that sentence.

Earthquake itself (not the tsunami) released about 336 megatons of force.

Thats equivalent of 22400 atom bombs dropped to Hiroshima.
Thats equivalent of 13.44 hydrogen bombs developed by US during the cold war.

In joules, energy released was 1.51 exajoule, which is equivalent of 1510000000000000000 joule, which is enough to lift that much apples 1 meter above the ground. Thats equivalent of the body heat generated by 6.8 million people through their entire lives (average 70 years).

1 kilo of antimatter, when comes in contact with normal matter, produces about 43 megatons of force. Which makes this earthquake equivalent of 7.81 kilos of antimatter explosion.

Again, that is just the energy of the earthquake, tsunami is a whole different story. 2004 earthquake released 9560 gigatons of energy in total, but at its core, the earthquake only released 26 megatons of energy.

Its getting late and my math could be sketchy, feel free to correct it, I'll add the corrections to this post.

While I sympathize with Japanese people, their government is wealthy enough to cover all the expenses.

While hundred millions of other people suffering from hunger every day, starting an aid campaign to Japan seems... Well...

In 1 scene, a man tries to start his car. He seems to succeed but the car goes only few meters and stops. He stays on the car for a few, but the waves are getting closer, he then exists the car and starts running on foot, but its already too late.

In another video, a truck driver is seemingly unaware of the tsunami waves, he sees it at the last second and makes a sharp turn, but giant waves swallow him after few seconds.

Watching things like this, makes me shiver. That man could've been me or you.

What every troll doesn't get that charity i.e plex is for people who cannot help themselves and or isn't getting help from their inept or indifferent government. Japan can deal with this on their own.

A lot of poor countries have/are being buried under the wall of water from the tsunami though so a PLEX collection could be funneled to the charities helping those people out.

So far the wave is around 50cm tall in the other places it hit. Looks like most of the energy was directed at japan but we will know for sure when it starts to hit the smaller islands.

Half a metre is more than enough to cause huge loss of life and homelessness and leave an aftermath of disease and starvation.

Actually, no, it is the 8th.

1. May 22, 1960 Valdivia earthquake 9.5
2. March 28, 1964 Alaska earthquake 9.2
3. December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake 9.1
4. January 26, 1700 Cascadia earthquake 9
5. November 25, 1833 Sumatra earthquake 8.8-9.2
6. August 13, 1868 Arica earthquake 9
7. November 4, 1952 Kamchatka earthquakes 9

I'm not counting 1755 Lisbon as it's listed as 8.7 magnitude elsewhere so the number is not reliable and 9 + 8.7 / 2 = 8.85.

But yeah, big bastard of a quake. As with real estate the impact of a quake is location, location, location. Much weaker quakes have caused much greater loss of life and destruction (I hope).

EDIT : I hope there is not a much death and destruction is what I mean of course, altough the livefeed is not looking that great.

Thankfully it doesnt look that way this time. The waves just hit hawaii at 0.9m and looks to have done little damage. Looks like the new warning systems in the poorer nations have payed off.

now that's interesting tbh.

anyways, this quake by itself wasn't really the one that caused most of the destruction and death.
first death count was on the 20's, this was at... 9AM GMT or so. as soon as people would get accounted for, atm I would say that death toll would be on the 500-600, and I'm damn sure that nearly 80-90% of the deaths were caused by the tsunami and not the quake itself.
so yeah, location really determinates the impact of the quake, which, in this case, it being on the sea, meant that tsunamis would be the main problem.
