You don't see the problem? You realise the server is down because people are working on it?

or not

here's why your idea wont work. the little guys in iceland who work on the game, are people. what if your boss told you you had to come in at midnight one week, 6am the next and so on and so on. downtime is when ccp has the most people who can work on the server at the time. if the variable schedule downtime is implemented, you'll see a lot of devs jumping ship because they cant spend time with their families and friends because they have to go to work at midnight on say a friday night.

Dear CCP,

Why is it everytime we have an extended DT, is ALWAYS in the bloody middle of the evening for us aussies (and otheras arounf the +9 to +11 TZ)

Perhaps we should look at how many aussies, kiwis, and other people from asia/oceania and hour many hours we get get ripped over a single year... Perhaps people in the TZ could get a small extension to our 'gametime' to compensate now and then...

2 hours out in 2 subsequent evenings makes me want to go play another game... Either spread out your extended DT's or compensate us please...

We get LESS value for money than others...

Dear Sir,

Would you like some cheese with that whine ?

I to would like if the server came out of downtime at my peak play time after the now very short downtimes (ok not this week) so all the roids/officers/whatever have just spawned compared to comming home after work and having the belts sucked clean.

And why, I ask you, is it MY responsibility to feed someone else? Last I checked, I am responsible for feeding and caring for myself. Not my neighbors.

What people like you forget is Uncle Sugar pays out billions of dollars a year to countries all around the world, supporting them for the most part.

Want to hear the world REALLY whine? I say we stop subsidizing other nations. Close our military bases in other countries and let them defend themselves from any potential aggressors, bring all our men and women home, and tell the entire world to suck a dry egg.

Right about the time some poor little wounded pride nation gets their backsides handed to them by someone else the outcry will be "UNCLE SUGAR WE LOVE YOU.... HELPPPPPPPPPP".

Since isolationism has worked so well for the US in the past... anyway, what this has to do with the topic at hand... i have no idea

Maybe reading the quote of the person I responded to would give you a clue. There is also a difference between isolationism, and supporting the world. The United States in my personal opinion, spends far too much money supporting other countries by paying them to allow us to have bases on their land. Close the bases. The United states spends far to much money subsidizing nations when we have enough problems of our own.

Trade is necessary in a global economy, I don't propose stopping that, my opinion is that we have no right o be in any other country, and we shouldn't be paying to keep other countries economies viable, when our own is in the crap hole. Let other nations defend themselves. Pay for themselves, and support their own economies. It isn't OUR problem, and I for one, would love to watch the screaming the second UNCLE SGAR stopped giving away money to the world.

The '5-6%' of the playerbase argument ignores the fact that far more people in asia-pacific might be tempted to play if DT didn't happen to squat in the middle of their playtime.

There seems to be this idea that Asia-Pacific consists entirely of Australia and the Solomon Islands, ignoring such horrendous backwaters such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Phillipines.

Its not as if any of those places might harbour reasonably large populations of MMO players with silly amounts of disposable income and spare time now is it?

I can totally understand why CCP would be uninterested in varying DT by 2-3 hours as a result, because there couldn't be any possible benefit commercially in doing so.

Could there?

so, here's another potential explanation that'll be pretty unpopular. what if they already know how you feel, accept that it's probably wrong but know that you guys won't quit over a 30 minute downtime so they just keep doing it anyway?

because, all histrionics aside - no one is quitting over this. and I don't mean the usual "look at me, I'm quitting, no, really, I'm quitting, guys, over here, guys, I'm quitting, honestly, I'm going" threads, I mean people actually canceling accounts/biomassing chars.

are they?

I agree, aside from the fact that its not really the regular downtimes that cause the angst, its the extended DT's.

Once you're in to the game and you've played for any length of time, then no, you're unlikely to go hysterical and biomass. The problem comes in attracting new players to the game once they've found out that each and everytime there is an extended DT its going to have a dispoportionate effect on their playtime because they happen to live in that rather large continent the other side of the planet from Iceland.

CCP realise the commercial advantages of Asia-Pacific in setiing up the Chinese server and establishing offices here, so it can't be something they're blind to. As more markets outside of China develop and the playerbase grows accordingly, I'm sure DT will be something they will have to look at.

Its interesting to note the hypocrisy present in some of the playerbase though; when there is an extended DT that impinges on the EU/US TZ's in any way, we have 20-30 page threadnaughts with outraged calls for compensation and SP donations, when its the AU TZ the same people chant '**** you Australia' and post pictures of a Joey with its throat cut.

Yeah okay, I made that bit up.

I live in the NA TZ, and you know what, I would not be opposed to different extended downtimes. It means that every time zone is affected equally, and who knows, it might actually get some more people in the Asia/Pacific TZ playing.

I would hope that people in Iceland know what a shift is, and would maybe consider working different shifts once in a while for extended DT to allow the aussies some more uninterrupted game time

Now, I don't live there so this is just conjecture but I think you're overstating the problem. Agreed, it must be frustrating but if people enjoy the game they'll put up with it because they, well, enjoy the game. Doesn't make it right but it does make it easy for CCP to run their business in a way that suits them.

Yeah, you did. No arguing that there is a lot of noise when it hits then, but if (going back to the figure that was thrown around earlier) we're talking about the 5-6% of the playerbase that are in AsiaPac as opposed to the what, 70-80% that are in NA/EU, that extra noise makes sense.

Again, not saying it's right, but anyway you slice it, people aren't going to quit and CCP will keep running their business how they want. There's a lot of talk to the contrary on these forums from some of the whining maggots, but it's worked out pretty well for CCP so far.

I made up the bit about little Joey spilling its blood in the outback not the hypocrisy bit. The numbers involved don't make it any less hypocritical.

As far as it working out well so far, if those numbers change, and they will, DT will be something they look at and then we'll see where the maggotry resides.

Lets imagine for a moment a world without the great firewall of China and consider just how much bigger that mooted figure of 5-6% would be, along with the corresponding effect on where DT was situated.

The 20 minutes DT is neither here nor there, its scheduling of extended DT's and if what you say is true then no-one in the EU/US is going to go spastic and biomass either if it hits their primetime.

Why dont you work different shifts once in a while so your playtime is not over the DT. I guess it's much easier to demand that the CCP staff change their lives to suit you.

Nice job completely ignoring the first sentence. Need to learn how to read I think. He wasn't saying he was Aussie TZ, but just thought that it sucks that the Aussies get shafted everytime CCP needs to update something.

My bad. I was scanning the post and my mind saw 'NA TZ' as NA (some province) in TZ (TaZmania).

However, I still find requests to get CCP to make their employees work night shifts to suit a minority of players a little selfish.

I'll give people a hint why it tends to get the Asia Pacific region upset, especially in this case australians.

Downtime begins at 11:00 UCT now that time moves depending on if it's daylight savings but it's either 10pm, 9pm or 8pm and that is if your AUEST or AUESDT (Australian Eastern Standard Time or Australian Eastern Standard Daylight Time).

Now 11:00 UCT is i think abotu 9am Iceland time ( I could be wrong), It's 12am New Zealand Time, 11am England time, etc etc.

the point that is being made is how does moving it later by a few hours at times really hurt any one?

And the normal 30 minutes isn't a problem but when a 30 minute dt turns into an hour or two hours etc it starts getting annoying when it's technically in your 'primetime' as for saying 'hey go shift work' ok so a builder can suddenly work from 6pm onwards? Last time i checked noise laws prevented that especially after 10pm..

for those of you in the US who don't get the time zone changes Using USMT as it stands right now and AUESDT/AUESST (daylights saving):

12am Australia - 6am previous day US
6am Australia - 12pm Previous day US
12pm Australia - 6pm previous day US
6pm Australia - 12am same day US.

Sorry not many places are going to let you out to play internet spaceships from midday to dinner time.

how do you think the numbers are going to change? After saying that the DT will put people off, you believe that TZ is going to rise up and become so popular that it'll force DT to be in the UK/US TZ? Or did I miss something?

How about just the reliability of knowing when DT is going to be every day? Not having to consult calendars and star charts to find out if DT is at 0545, 1823, or 0220 today?

So yes, having a reliable DT schedule, rather than keeping your players guessing is good business. That's reason enough for me.

I eagerly await the pearls of wisdom you undoubtedly will send my way in response.

Option 1: Quit your job, get a job at your local supermarket stacking shelves at night, play during the day

Option 2: Move to the UK

Option 3: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft

P.s: I don't advise the latter.

I agree with OP. When is prime playing time for most people around the world? After dinner, late evening? 9pm?

Thats Aussie DT.

Why not adjust the DT so it occurs at 9pm in the middle of the pacific ocean, where even less than the 5% Aussie player base exist...?

As for arguing that CCP would have to get up at 3am to reset the servers...phooey. These days, multi-million dollar companies have internet support working 24/7, and I bet the same is true for CCP. If a network or database problem happens any time of day...CCP is onto it, or at least, the rest of the world is crying to CCP to fix it pronto.

For the last goddamn time:

THE AUSTRALASIAN PLAYERBASE IS TINY. WHO CARES THAT IT CUTS INTO YOUR PRIMETIME - DT CUTS INTO MY LUNCH TIME, BUT DO YOU HEAR ME COMPLAINING ABOUT IT? NO SIR

Seriously, there are only like a dozen people playing EVE from Australia and two in New Zealand, presumably it is just you guys making these same threads again and again. I assume you would've told each other that you've each made a thread on this subject now? Rolling EyesLaughing

You do realise where the servers are located, don't you?

I'm going to avoid pyramid quoting and just try and spell it out for you because you're getting excited.

People who live in that huge continent that's quite a ways from wherever you live may well be put off from paying for a game that has the tendency to wipe out their playtime whenever there is an extended DT.

That's quite reasonable.

Those people that have already become sucked into the game who live in that huge continent get a little ****ed off by paying for a game that has the tendency to wipe out their playtime whenever there is an extended DT.

That's quite reasonable.

Those people point out that by varying these periods of extended DT (or even, if they wanted to be really revolutionary, regular DT) by as little as a couple of hours or so, preferably into around 8-9.00am UK-time, there would be little impact to either CCP work-patterns or anyone else's playtime. They might even settle for a 'moving DT' Shocked.

They also point out the huge hypocrisy present when a selection of internet hardmen turn up on the forums and tell Asia to harden up about DT but when there's a major snafu and CCP lose a whole day we have 20-30 page *****-fests full of gnashing of hands and wringing of teeth.

Now CCP and any other business with the slightest regard for its bottom line know that Asia is utlimately where its at for them, its inevitable and unless they move away from the single game universe approach, EvE will have to consider Asia a little more carefully than they do now.

CCP China server is relatively poorly populated because Chinese consumers don't have to settle for second best anymore and they know when they're being offered an inferior product and they are.

The hypothetical point was and still is, that if and probably when CCP start to pitch 'our' eve at Asia with more commitment than they do at present, then quite a few things, DT amongst them will be looked at.

Best-case scenario is that we don't have DT (unlikely) or that if we do, CCP learn to keep a lid on the eruption of total failure that ensues when they do their patches thereby ensuring that no-one is ****ed off and everyone, even you, are kept happy.

So not many people, least of all me, are threatening to quit/biomass/demand free SP or monetary compensation but we do think that moving DT forward by a couple of hours might be nice and not really upset anyone else too much and provide CCP with a greater appeal around these parts.

This is just my opinion of course and it won't change when I move back to the UK in the next 3-5 years either.

And as far as reality goes, I believe you mentioned little green men landing and the planet doing something interesting.

You go, you crazy diamond.
